Domestic tourists and visitors from neighboring countries brave rain showers to pose with the mermaid statue and enjoy riding horses at the Samila Beach in Songkhla on the New Year’s Eve on Saturday.

However, due to the Meteorological Department’s warnings, heavy downpours, big waves and strong winds will prevail the lower Southern part of Thailand from December 31, 2016 to January 6, 2017.

Smart move.  Our platforms are reporting 10-12' swells in the GOT down south.

Edit:  The good news is that, unlike a lot of Thai beaches, here's what Samila Beach will look like after the storm.  This photo was taken right after a storm, which is why the water isn't a beautiful green/blue.

I didn't see anyone else out there doing it.  Nor any garbage.  So it must.

Seriously, though- yes they pick up garbage and it ends up in the steel box.

You see them all the time on US beaches where labor to pick up litter and groom the beach is more expensive than diesel and amortization.  I was pleased to see this one on Samila Beach.

Edit:  Though I do have mixed feelings about seeing a machine doing the work of a few dozen locals who could use the money to feed their families.
