At the tiger show they tell you never approach the animal from behind. You would think the man could dress up a bit when going out maybe the lion viewed him as a big steak with no shirt on. The quality tourists just keep streaming in.

These places are about generating revenue, no more, and animal welfare runs a distant last.

Once was enough for a zoo visit in Asia. They are all so appalling and too sad to look at the poor animals cooped up in these cesspits. Never go to a zoo anywhere in Asia again except the Kings Gardens down at Sattahip. Not too bad for a day out there

Lions are beautiful creatures that should not be treated or handled/kept in this dispiriting way.  My experiences with lions tell me they've never heard of the proposition that we might be above them on the food chain.  Even a drunk, loud visitor like this one would still be a good-looking lamb chop to a chained lion that hasn't smelt or tasted fresh blood for a while.  Why didn't visitor note the "keeper" kept well away, no stroking, calming voice or patting to reassure the lion (alarm bells there).  Why was the keeper's only contribution to the interaction the flicking and 'swatting' of his chopstick (just before the lion's 'reaction' - was he taking the piss out of the tourist?).  Cats of any size don't like sudden noises.  Try that stroking, patting or scratching action on your cat at home, male or female, on the spine where it meets the tailbase.  It is a signal (to a cat) of sexual interest. Depending on her mating season schedule,  a female will react differently.  Clarence would always take it as a challenge to his 'manhood" (unless ...?).  The drunk showed good sense in wanting to get out.  The whole scenario looked most unprofessional; not hard to predict a dreadful outcome sooner or later on site. Menstruating females should stay well clear, or if you've been handling dogs or monkeys etc before your visit.  I was impressed by the dopey (drunk?) female voice in the  background; 'C'mon Robbie, he won't bite you.'  Famous last words. It's staggering when you're up close with a mature male (this one's fairly young). Their pre-hunt or mating/challenge calls easily match the gnarliest rock band amps for shaking the air around you.  Their sheer size: a skull that equals the complete torso of an adult man. Totally intimidating   reality check. Four claws on each paw that are longer, pointier and sharper, more efficient than the average steak knife. Magnificent. They deserve better than the treatment his miserable specimen seems to have to endure.

Shame on the zoo for treating the lion this way and shame on the tourist for condoning the practice.  Not sure who is more despicable really but the animal deserves much better

English intellectual visits Thai zoo has no one told him about how they treat animals in Thai zoo’s yet and that the tranquilisers start to wear off on the display animals eventually.  Lucky he wasn’t on an African safari.
