Thai consulate officials in Japan are seeking freedom for a Thai senior official who was arrested for allegedly stealing cheap paintings from a hotel in Kyoto.

Suphat Sanguandeekul, deputy director-general of the Department of Intellectual Property, is being detained at a Kyoto police station after he was busted with three stolen paintings in his suitcase at the time of checkout. The CCTV footage from the hotel indicated that he stole three landscape paintings from the ninth and tenth floors at the hotel.

Kyoto police will allow officials from the Thai Consulate in Osaka to talk to Suphat today, and if Suphat shows remorse and is willing to pay compensatory damages, the Consulate will ask the prosecutor to drop the charges.

The Thai consular official in Osaka met for the first time with Mr Supat Sa-nguandeekul, deputy director-general of the Intellectual Property Department, to discuss the latter’s alleged theft of three hotel paintings in Kyoto, Mr Sek Wannamethi, spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, said on Friday.

The official also discussed with the Japanese prosecutor about the legal proceedings and was told that, in accordance with Japanese justice procedure, Mr Supat would be held in police detention for 10 days in Kyoto before the case proceeds to the court.

So, I expect that Thai officials will be happy to ratify another agreement in Kyoto.

This one (instead of saving the planet) is far more important - saving the face of their light-fingered DDG with a penchant for cheap hotel-prints.

And, the Ministry of Commerce will probably accept Sanguandeekul's "contrite" plea that, "What happens in Kyoto stays in Kyoto" !!!

What would happen if this was in Thailand and the person doing the stealing was not a high ranking foreigner ?

He would be shackled and locked in a dungeon before he knew it - that's what would happen.

No, he would not. Dont exaggerate.

No he wouldn't. Financial compensation would be paid and he'd be on his way - pretty much what's happening in this case.

What was he thinking??? If he wanted them so bad, should of asked  the hotel they would sell them . Did he think he was still in Thailand where he could do as he pleased??  He should be punished again in Thailand upon his return as this is a great embarrassment to all .

Do you ever read anything properly-------he is going to be held in a Kyoto jail for 10 days then a trial

If you follow the news properly, you would know he was released early with a fine and no court.

The UK via its embassy in Bangkok says it never interferers with local justice when a British Nat gets arrested even on trumped up corrupt Thai charges put by a Thai to make money and it also says Thailand does the same, it never interferes.

So here we have Mr Supat Sa-nguandeekul who allegedly nicks a few cheap paintings and in goes the Thai embassy interfering in Japan's local Justice system

I expect its a Counselor  thing A Borris Johnson

Remember former BKK police chief that got caught in Japan trying to bring an unlicensed gun on the plane, nothing happened......
