BANGKOK, 30 January 2017 (NNT) – Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisit confirmed the authorities will tighten up measures against those who might violate traffic rules ahead of Songkran festival.

The transport minister who visited NBT World and granted an exclusive interview to Thailand Today program said that legal action will be taken against drivers of all types of public vehicles who might break traffic rules following a rising number of road accidents during New Year season. The law will be strictly enforced with the hope to prevent road accidents before Songkran festival in April.

Mr. Arkhom said that immediate measures are to keep highways and roads in perfect conditions for motorists. Since speeding could possibly lead to a road accident, motorists during the Songkran festival will be advised to observe the speed limit to 90 kms an hour under the law.

Meanwhile, control measures are to be strictly taken for public transport vehicles, particularly intercity buses and vans and micro-buses, all of which will remain in perfect conditions otherwise they might be banned for a certain period of time.

Besides, the Ministry of Transport has set four long-term plans including the Safer Road project designed to make perfect road conditions, road signs and electronic speed control system and to be implemented by the Department of Highways and the Department of Rural Roads.

The Safer Vehicle project which the Ministry of Transport will discuss with automobile makers regarding safety systems for each particular vehicle such as buses, vans, micro-buses, mini-buses, sedans and motorcycles.

The Safer Driver project which is considered the most important effort to contain road accidents and the Road Safety Management project, which calls for a monitoring measure to be taken in cooperation with other parties and agencies, said Mr. Arkhom.

Oh please.  Didn't we just read this headline a month ago, only with 'New Years' instead of 'Songkran'?

Same same EVERY year.  Crackdown on drunk drivers, bad drivers, etc. etc.   And the results are always predictable.  This Songkran will be no different.

Here we go again. Sadly it looks like a new record in the making for road fatalities for 2560 Songkron. Flatulent talk of safety measures will not make a scrap of difference like it didn't for the 2017 New Year.

No mention of police in the plans !! Get them to do there job and problem solved. Oh wait ! And as others above have said it's predicable and almost a copy and paste every year but surprisingly results remain the same ...carnage ...

Yes they definitely need a reminder about every 15 minutes maybe less as their attention span seems to be on the short side. Well folks feel safe over Songkran anyways.
