Goodbye to Thailand (for a while maybe)

Those who have seen my previous statements/comments will know that I am leaving Thailand -  well the news is that today is the day.

So while I wait for the flight (and wife is having a post-lunch nap) I decided to elaborate a little on why we are leaving while I wait.

I have previously given some details about the 'headline' isues , so I wont go over that again (please look if you want to know more).

My wife is emigrating to Australia - it took just over a year from application to approval - and although costly, it was a clear, consistent and simple process. Once in Australia my wife will have 'full rights' and will be equal to all other persons - she can buy property, open any bank account, pay same price, call police, etc etc etc etc etc etc. And if she 'behaves' (no jail) then after 2 years she gets permanent residency, and can then get an Australian Passport. And after 5 years of 'behaving' she can become an Australian Citizen (dual). If she lives/works for 10 years in Aust she can then get an Australian Pension (and take it back to Thailand and live very well). The list of comparisons between myself coming here 4 years ago with a 'Retired Visa'and my Wife going to Australia is endless - and that comparison is all a one-way list. The Wife is far far better treated in Aust than I am in Thailand.  Although I will come back to live in Thailand if that is what the wife wants, my hope is that like 2 other Thais she knows who now live in Australia (and a few more we know of), is that she will want to stay in Aust and we will only visit Thailand going forward.

Unless (and until) the Thai Govt decides to encourage Expats to live in Thailand (not just the Chinese, backpackers and sexpat tourists), and decides to match local countires like Malaysia, and starts to give us 'long term' Expats decent legal rights and priveleges (to stay and spend all our money here), then I aint keen to ever come back and live here.

And here I am at Swampy and this is what I just found out about - talk about the straw and icing all in one story.  Hasanyone ever heard of this, and all the other things, in another country??

I will not be responding to anyone - but feel free to make comments    :wai:

  • My mate did all that then she walked........

  • I did all that, plus take her 2 teenage daughters as well. Mine waited for the 2 years & then walked with a younger guy. So, she's there & I'm here. Very happily settled.

  • Post back in a year when the emotions aren't so raw and after the repatriation/emigration honeymoon is over.   In the meantime, best of luck to both of you.   And I mean that sincerely.

All sounds so rosy what could possibly go wrong? Don't know much about it is its too many years away for me to worry about but I doubt if after working for 10 years the Aussie gov't is just going to let your missus flit off back to Thailand and live out her years on an Aussie pension. I am sure there are Aussies in Thailand who lived worked and paid taxes their whole lives who may have trouble doing that. I would love to hear from someone that actually knows the rules about receiving the pension whilst living overseas but knowing my government I am sure there would be a shit load of hoops to jump through. I'll be lucky to get my super little lone just kick back in Thailand while the Aussie gov't pays me to do <deleted> all.

my wife and i done the same, she stayed for 20yrs. in the uk.and yes she had all what i CANT, then it was me that wanted to come back permantly,i dont regret it but the wife would go back tomorrow.

so GOOD LUCK.

What could go wrong - The other Thai women letting her know about all the Aussie laws for women ( did you own a house ) - have heard of a few stories $400,000 being one

Ahh working for 10 yrs - Yes can be done ( not sure if its only the Kiwis ) but they do compare with what you may get from home country ( in which is Thailnd ) so would get all that is entitled to her for the amount of yrs worked in her life time in Auss - Uk can

Aussies can get Pension overseas but minus all the privelages ( but the way the Gov is tightening the screws it may stop ) - + we pay tax on Super Contributions & when claiming at retirement

The Hoops - Personally i would not even want the Auss Gov knowing anything about my wife - Example : Perth Thai Cons. wanted every document of my Marriage Cert + wifes name change

I was being a bit tounge in cheek and I am well aware of Thais wording other Thais up on the ins and outs of being married to Aussie bloody 2 blokes in the first 5 posts had horror stories that should tell you something. Typical of our gov't. that Aussies have to fight for it while others can just take it back where they come from. As I said the way the rules are changing I'll be lucky to see my super and I think the retirement age for someone I'm my age bracket is 70 and rising..<deleted> that for a game of soldiers.

If you work in Australia for ten years you get a pension? Really?

Good luck in the future for you and your wife, we all know what Thailand is like and her laws as a 3rd world country long before we move here, every country is different, Thais don't even have to be resident in the UK to buy land or property, I know I cant do that legally in Thailand, but still choose to live there over UK anytime

Wish people would get over not being able to own land or houses. News flash you can become a citizen.

I bet she gets a snooty attitude on her before the aussie twang. :whistling:

All the best.

" I would love to hear from someone that actually knows the rules about receiving the pension whilst living overseas"

I receive the Aussie aged pension & reside permanently in Thailand. I have done so for 3 years. OZ govt is well aware of my circumstances. I get the basic pension payment but no supplements such as rental assistance & the like. I also have a modest annuity pension.

Re aged pension for my EX ... My understanding is for full payment, one has to have worked in Australia for 35 years. The amount is prorata based on the 35 years. Having worked in excess of 50 years, I didn't bother researching the topic fully. I'm sure someone has better info on that subject.

Cheers.....     Mal.

Different countries have different rules - I never get why this is a surprise to some people.

It would be far stranger if all countries had the same set of rules... but I guess then people would complain about differing weather or food... or we could all just live in a bowl of milk... celebrate the difference.

That said, I hope your new life suits you better...

And RIP to the jumper, such a shame.

You also have to be residing in Australia for 2 years prior to retiring to receive a pension paid overseas. You are correct in that to receive a full pension you have to have worked in Australia for 35 years. The Aussie pension is also means tested, so if you have other income like superannuation, bank interest etc, the pension can be reduced.I only receive 50% of the full pension because of this.

Welcome home. It's a great place to live.

Some people (not all of them) find that the grass isn't really greener...  Fortunately, some come to that revelation before they're in too deep to change their mind.  Others burn their bridges and/or their cash and get stuck in a bad situation with no viable way back.
