darksidedog
My condolences to the families. Sadly, I seem to be offering them on a daily basis. It is sad that while this sort of thing happens continuously, they don't ever seem to learn anything from it. You have to be seriously stupid to not do so. webfact
School bus falls into ravine on Highway 304 killing six, injuring 44 PRACHINBURI: Four teachers, two students were killed and 44 others injured when a school bus skidded off Highway 304 and fell into a 30-metre ravine early this morning. The tragic incident happened at 03.00 am Thursday on Kilometre 208 of the highway from Kabinburi to Nakhon Ratchasima in Nadi district of Prachinburi province. According to Nadi district police, about 70 students and teachers from Pangtui Pattanasuksa secondary school in Nam Pong district of Khon Kaen were on a school excursion trip to Ao Kungkraben in Chanthaburi. The bus left Khon Kaen at about 9.00 pm and took Highway 304 from Nakhon Ratchasima to Chanthaburi. But as the bus was descending the steep hill section near KM 208 of the highway which is a sharp curve with the ravine on the right and steep hill on the left, it developed braking failure. The bus lost balance, skidded and crashed into the traffic barrier and a high-voltage power pole and plunged into the ravine 30 metres below. Enoon
4.30am, driver unfamiliar with the road. A somewhat challenging drive for heavy vehicles in the best of circumstances. Especially unforgiving at the moment due to large scale roadworks. Have travelled that part of the 304 (by bus) in both directions in the last week. On both journeys the drivers were fully in control of the vehicle on the steep sections, using the gears in the correct way to maintain a sensible downhill speed. Used Nakhonchai, Loei-Rayong service (not the same company as Nakhonchai Air or Nakhonchai Tour): Edited March 9, 2017 by Enoon
eddie61
I wish someone would explain to these bus drivers about LOW GEAR on the downhill.. I always thought the rule was that you go downhill in the same gear as you would need to go up the same hill.. If he were in 2nd or 1st, he would not smoke the brakes, and if for some unexplained reason the brakes fail, he could pretty likely save the day by crashing into the hillside in a controlled way at slow speed, rather than whizzing down the ravine. Anyway, I guess that is a bit difficult, and I await the next accident.....

Maggusoil
That is the living pits. This driver "running" away from the scene of this accident. Alcohol in the blood perhaps? A guilty conscience perhaps? What a bunch of revolting, disgusting, gutless, spineless irresponsible cowards they breed and train here. It really is pathetic. I have mainly been a great supporter of all things Thai, but this running away from an accident, is indicative of something else fairly unsavoury running in the Thai psyche. You have no idea, do you......driver run away from any incident so as to avoid any bail complications . they need the insurance rep to be there before the police.......do I need to explain why? it is also worth noting that the driver is "recovering" and has spoken to the police.....heaven forbid any of that should interfere with your determination to lay preconceived blame--------

Smithson
The kids were going all the way from Khon Khen to Chantaburi. My guess the accident was on hwy 304. A few years ago there was an accident in the same area, this time the kids were coming from Chonburi, around 25 died. There are plenty of educational activities close to us, but our kids are never taken there, day trips always involve half a day in the bus. Why do teachers take kids on day trips to places so far away?
spidermike007
The traffic fatalities here, which are the second highest on the planet, per capita, could be lessened dramatically, if the government and the RTP (Royal Toy Police) gave a damn, or cared one iota. Intelligent enforcement of the existing laws would bring down the carnage. Traffic safety in general could be enforced, and severe penalties could be imposed for reckless or drunk driving. Many of us drive motorcycles or scooters here, and it is dangerous getting on the roads with some of these other drivers. Getting on a scooter, or a motorcycle anywhere in Thailand, much less Phuket, Phangan, Dark Tao, or Samui without a very good helmet, is like playing Russian Roulette with three or four bullets in the chamber. It is absolutely asking for problems. The degree of recklessness here is astounding. And many foreigners come here thinking "how much trouble could I get in on a little scooter, on a tropical island"? Well, the answer is alot. The amount of foreigners who are killed on the Southern islands is staggering. Most are not reported in the media. I had a friend who worked for Samui rescue for many years, and said the numbers were about 30-60 a month, on Samui, Phangan and Koh Tao. The official number is about 3 a month. Rider beware. Use as good a helmet as you can afford, and do not use these eggshells pieces of crap. They crack at the first impact, and what lies underneath them? Your skull, which is very delicate. Just ask yourself- do I have enough problems already, without a broken skull, or smashed head, or face injury, or lost eye? I have two friends who have been in motorbike accidents on Samui within the last two years. One still cannot walk, or talk or function on her own, from a motorbike accident, where she hit her head on the pavement going only 20 kph. The other one has lost alot of his mental capacity after hitting his head. He insisted for years he would never wear a helmet. Now, he seems 15 years older. I was told by a very reliable source. He did not have an agenda. He rescued alot of the survivors. He attended to alot of the ones who did not make it. The press here is highly censored. The report only what the so called leaders want them to report. Nothing else. Social media? Why would social media report these statistics? They report individual accidents, but not overall statistics. Anything you read about accidents on Samui in the media would be false. Road deaths are now calculated based on fatalities on-site. Victims dying later in hospital not counted. In 2000 there was an average of 30 deaths a month on Koh Samui (official figures released each month). Now it is stated that Koh Samui has 3-5 deaths each month (using the new way of reporting road deaths). In the last ten years the population has almost doubled and there are now 5x more vehicles on Koh Samui. Based on ‘official figures’ today it is possible to estimate that Koh Samui currently has 60 deaths per million per year. (Compared to 23 in London.) Based on the population and traffic density statistics from 10 years ago Koh Samui has in reality 720 deaths per million per year. This is probably the highest rate of road deaths in the world. Samui is a fatality death spot that nobody is willing to acknowledge!

But also i think compulsory use is wrong. The wearing or not of a helmet has nothing to do with the cause of the accidents. That is what should be addressed.
