Park Where Children Play - Chiang Mai

Hello,

 

Is there any park in Chiang Mai where children (5-10 years old) (and parents) come and play (football, bike, etc.) ?

[New beginnings]

Buak Haad Park situated at the south west corner of the moat is an enjoyable place to spend a few hours. In addition to children's play equipment if you are also feeling fit there is a selection of outdoor exercise machines.  The park is very well maintained and entrance is free. Whilst there is a small cafe within the park many people just sit on the grass around the ponds for a good old fashion picnic.

I do hope your intentions are purely honourable and that you need the info to know where to take your or your family’s children to. 

 

It may have helped if you had clarified that at the beginning, assuming of course, as I am, that your intentions are purely honourable! A change in the title to 'A Park where Children can play' may have been better.

So I will precise what I am looking for :

A park where my soon-7 years old son can ride his bike, meet other children, play with the ball, ...

We are talking about 'Park' as in 'recreation space'  Not car 'Park'

Krisida Doi, is also a nice run out, not too far from the city on the road to Doi Suthep if I remember rightly (Highway 1269) , as is Huay Thung Tao on the road out to Mae Rim. (Highway 121) past the sports place on the left.

Huay thung Thao is a reservoir costing 50b for non Thais... 

 

Can swim,eat, fish and ride bikes on a paved road around the lake..

 

there is also 700 year stadium but more for adult recreational activities...

 

there is no western style municipal park with a complete children playground that I know of 

 

I truly wish there was...municipal city parks, green spaces and nature reserves are not part of urban planning in chiang mai...

Huay Thung Tao 20 Baht for Thais and Non Thais last time I was up there, they never discriminated before in the past 20 years. Never been charged 50 Baht in my life.  (You might want to make sure that your kids put on a pair of shoes if they go into the water, some retarded locals use the place as a boozing site some nights and sometimes throw bottles into the water, it is a very small minority of FuXktards that seem to be responsible) Also, the Night Safari during the day is pretty well good to take kids, again, they never charged me a discriminatory price. (I took my son - Half Thai, and they asked him in Thai if I was his dad, when he confirmed, I was charged the same rate as a Thai, I never asked, they asked him!)

Agreed:  I've often wondered why a city such as Chiang Mai must have a healthy income from the huge number of buildings going up, but close to zero parks, playgrounds for kids.

 

In some countries, there is a set percentage of land which must be set aside, but sadly, this obviously does not apply to Thailand.  Same could be said for footpaths, pedestrian lights, skate board areas, swimming pools, etc.  

 

Go over to China and have a look.  The city planners and government might learn something.

Every Third World Country I have visited falls into the "no parks for kids" category.  Maybe that's why? ?

"Sanam kirat tesaban", the stadium next to Chang Puak bus station is better for children playing I think.  The area outside the stadium has a fair amount of things for children to play with, though more for children around 3-6 years, but may be worth a visit for the OP's kid too.

 

Also has older guys on bmxs, playing basketball, etc.

This is a good question, not only for kids but for adults too. Not only are there pretty much no parks in the city (save a couple), there is no place good to ride a bicycle.

Buak Haad Park is not suitable for anyone with pushbikes, especially children, apart from parking up against a tree, because many people use the (not very wide) pathway to walk around for exercise. There is a concrete area at one end where people can (and do) play ball games. At the other end there is a children's playground suitable for 5-10 year-olds.  there are also shops that sell soft drinks, snacks, fish and bird food. A few cats/kittens live there, but no dogs are allowed - at least that's what the sign says.

Attractions : Ratchaphruek Garden - Tourism Authority of Thailand - lots of room to walk and enjoy the gardens and tons of parking space for little ones to scoot around.   Southwest of the city by the Night Safari!

It's important to state that only the outside parking space - it's huge -  is suitable for bike riding, but not allowed in the gardens. Just note you'll be paying tourist prices for entry
