BANGKOK: -- The head of business operators on Khao Sarn road has clarified the situation regarding Songkran celebrations on the tourist strip this year.

Piyabutr Jiwaramonaikun said that while shows held in previous years were indeed cancelled there would be no ban on water fights - so long as they were appropriate.

He said that changes have been made as the nation was still in mourning for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej who passed away last October, Thai News Agency reported.

The operators are mindful of the close proximity of the road to the area where people still continue to go to pay their respects to the departed monarch. Khao Sarn is just a stone's throw from Sanam Luang.

Piyabutr said that an international beauty pageant would not take place this year and there would be no stage set up. The only officially organized event was on the 13th of April when there would be a merit making and Buddhist image bathing ceremony.

But he said that tourists were welcome to play water fights as normal with a few provisos.

Powder and high powered water guns are banned and he asked that people dress appropriately.

Officials would be on had at the ends of the road to make sure that revellers complied, he said.

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) says Khao San road will still open to Songkran festival celebrants to enjoy  splashing water, but there will be no entertainment activities, and no playing with wet white powder or pasty substance.

BMA’s Phra Nakorn district chief officer Suppakit Boonkhan said that the Khaosan Road Business Association has recently asked for guidelines and instructions from the district office about this year’s Songkran festival celebration.

He said the office then advised it that business operators on Khao San road can hold the water festival but in the Thai traditional way and celebrate the water festival appropriately as the country is still in the mourning period.

They were asked not to hold Songkran beauty pageant contest, all entertainment activities, and playing music.
