Does anyone know how I can shop at Makro? Do you need to have a member card or can anyone walk in and shop? The previous times I've been is with someone else and I didn't actually see if they used a card or not.

At my first visit at Makro (some years ago) I was wondering the same.

No card needed. The cashier will ask and you tell him/her "no have".

You can walk in and ask for a day pass at the Customer Service Desk.

Otherwise, minimum Makro purchase of 2,000 baht would qualify you for a membership card.

MAKRO (TH) Member Qualifications

Though, as has been stated in other Makro-related threads, other than receiving a mailer there doesn't seem to be an advantage of having an actual membership card unless you are a licensed business and want the 'detailed' receipt.

And with a businness card there is obviously a high limit for any advantages.

Some thousand Baht a month seems to bring up nothing.

For long we use such a card from the (former) shop license of the daughter.

Actually useless, just full size invoices flying around in the trunk

I noticed that there are cash discounts for single purchases of more than 20'000 resp. 30'000 Baht.

They do take 1 kind of plastic, I just don't remember which.

They accept Citi Rewards Mastercard (the blue one) and Citi Makro Visa credit card (must be Thailand issued).

Most stores have a big banner proclaiming same.

I use the one in Pattaya, Sukhumvit Rd. You do need a member's card, easy enough to get by producing your passport at their customer desk

Make sure to use it at least once every 3 months or it will be cancelled and you apply again if you wish to have another one.

Went into that very same branch yesterday. Cashier asked my wife, you have card, she replied no. Still served us.

It seems that different Makros have different rules.  The ones I've been to insist on a card.  You can apply for it the same day.  They give you a temporary card and instruction to collect your 'real' card the following day.  The cashiers used to have their own card to use but no more.  Several times I've left the card in my car and I've had to walk out the exit, retrieve my card, back in the entrance and make my way to the cash-out.  Basically - no card, no shopping.

Where I shop the cashiers have a couple of cards ready to use for all those without a personal Makro card.

We do have a card, but I noticed last week that the girls at Khlong Luang did not appear to have the "spare" cards which were always in evidence in the past. New rules perhaps?

It's never an issue to get a Day Card, you need a 2,000 Baht purchase to apply for a Self Employed card anyway (check the Makro website the qualifications are listed there).

I agree = it does depend on which Makro you go to  here in Phuket.  In rawaii I had to apply for a card, which incidentally took over a week to get.

However here in Kata - no card - no problem.

But why would you want to?

These bulk retail stores aren't cheaper.  They just force you to buy higher quantities.  Good business model fleecing sheep.?

Not sure you're right on this one. You can buy one fish. How is this being forced to buy in higher quantities. You can buy one (ordinary) steak. One electrical item etc. Sure there are things that are bulk but when you break it down it's prob. cheaper than buying at e.g. Foodland if you can get it and you prob can't get it at Big C/Tesco. So, can buy a fish e.g. 10, 20,30 baht/kg cheaper than Lotus, not sure how I'm being fleeced or forced to do anything. Just sayin'.

At one Makro in  BKK there's a huge poster of a farang baker at their bakery...at another Makro i didn't see that poster.

Did you see that farang baker on the poster in your Makro's?? I wonder if he only works in that branch or that they use his picture for every Makro.

This farang should be ashamed to claim the bread is "baked fresh daily" but sold as fresh 3 days later. If i ever see him i'll go ask him if he thinks thats normal practise for a farang.

Forced to buy in large quantities?  If you don't want large quantities, don't shop there.  Simple... For me, large quantities are WHY I go.

my local makro is the only place where I can find ingredients fer the food that I wanna make like ground beef, flour and certain spices...in the past I let my wife and her daughter sort out whatever membership issues...

recently there have been no issues...you just walk up and pay cash and yer on yer way...the check out folks at our local store have been very helpful...

I don't think it's sold as "fresh", there's a sticker with the date. Most times we just ask, they never tried to mislead us.

That's absolute nonsense.  I've been shopping there for 15 years or more.  There are multipacks for certain products, usually bottles of drink.  Otherwise, most things are normal packs just as you would get in any other store. You want one small bottle of milk - no problem.  Small packet of cheese - no problem.  One can of baked beans - no problem. One chicken wing (now I'm being silly) - no problem.  I could go on!!

There are products that are cheaper elsewhere.  That's just a case of sensible shopping but in the main it's good value.

As long as you grab that chickenwing with bare hands and put it in a bag it's no problem....after that you are not allowed to wash your wands since this is thailand...

I just saw they sell the 3kg blocks of cheese there which cost half the price of small blocks compared to weight. So much profit for them for only cutting/packing cheese.
