UDON THANI: -- A huge crowd of onlookers watched in horror as a mother tried to save her 14 year old son who had been plucked from an Udon Thani lake by rescue divers.

The mother Nuchanart Suphadee, 36 - who is a nursing assistant downtown - desperately tried to revive her son Jirasak shouting "Come round, come round, come back to your mum".

But he had been in the water for two hours and there was to be no miracle. Finally as the crowd surveyed the shocking scene she gave up her life saving attempt and collapsed, reported Daily News.

After she herself recovered she told reporters that she had two sons and Jirasak was her oldest and was in the care of grandparents.

She said that she was on duty at her hospital in Udon and had stayed downtown overnight as she had another shift on Sunday morning.

She was alerted to the tragedy by her father who called her and she immediately dropped everything and rushed to the lake in Chiang Yeun sub-district.

She said that her son had gone out to play with friends and should not have been in the lake as he could not swim well.

In tears she added: "I can't believe it - in the course of my job I have given CPR to countless people. I never thought I would have to do it for my own son".

Local kamnan Thongphitak Motho,53, told Daily News that he had warned people about the dangers of the five meter deep lake with children sneaking out in the holidays to play there.

He would repeat his warnings and erect a sign at the site, he said.

Tragic and once again reinforces the need for people to teach their kids to swim. Im an Aussie at home its imperative all kids learn to swim, I cant fathom a 14 year old that couldnt at least tread water or know how to float. She must have been distraught dont know what she thought she would achieve after 2 hours under water.

RIP young fella.

Totally tragic loss of life and terrible that the mum arrived and tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Also awful that warnings had been given about the lake. One hopes that now something will be done to improve safety.

I remember being taught to swim at school. Would be good to see that introduced here, where it would save countless lives each year.

All water, swimming pools, fish ponds, lakes should be fenced with childproof fencing... section 44 could be put to good use???!!!

Wrong!

All children should learn how to swim.

Are you also suggesting 1000's miles of childproof fencing around the coast?

As advice above suggests, teach all kids to swim.....  I even personally taught the wife's nephew, to the point of him being very capable now.

Free swimming lessons for all might be more effective.

Based on that idea, perhaps Prayuth can order the fencing off of the entire coastline of Thailand so that non-swimmers cannot gain access to water and drown in the sea?

As others stated, learning to swim and float is the real answer.
