"Fixed" those that didn't need no fixing. Sooner or later you run into problems w/ that approach.

When to update drivers

When it comes to device drivers, I’m a firm believer in “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. That means I don’t go updating drivers just for the sake of updating drivers. I need a reason.

This is contrary to my approach to all the other software on a machine, which is to keep it as up-to-date as possible. With drivers, I don’t do that.

To do or not to do, that is the question.

I use IOBit Driver Booster to update drivers. I'm not aware of any problems it has caused. I do know that old drivers can cause problems though, and one of the first things people try when something goes wrong is to update drivers using the device manager.

I think you've got that the wrong way around.

IMO It should be: "there are many that think they need to and a few that think they don't".

Do you have any conclusive evidence from a computer guru that "cleaners" are not necessary? If so, I'd like to see it. I've seen quite a few arguments both ways. If I was like you who "knows" you don't need them, I would stop paying for my favourite cleaner.

It's accepted in the Windows computer world that after time most systems slow down and eventually require clean re-installation to remove the clutter that slows the system down. I know why my systems slow down - from having too many programs installed. I keep thinking I'll need them but never use them LOL.

I use system "cleaners". I have not re-installed Windows on the computer that I'm typing on now since 2011. I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10.

I will say this... I installed Windows 10 in an attempt to improve on a failing Windows 7. If I didn't I was facing the necessity of doing a clean install anyway, so I thought I'd give it ago seeing it was being offered for free. It worked! It runs very well other than the odd bug and a few nightmares during updates.

I'm not even going to get into it with you, you carry on and do what you think is best for you, that is entirely your business, just ignore my posts if you don't agree

it really is entirely up to you.......................................and me

10bit driver booster works great for me, it found and fixed loads of drivers. My keyboard was "sticking" a few weeks back, found an old one, plugged it in and the program told me the driver for it was ancient and installed the latest driver...

Seems obvious to me we will all get a problem at sometime for various different reasons.

Sorry, Trans, but you're so wrong. Let's take my son't PC as an example. An older machine with W 10, the 1703 update on it, running well on an old IBM I bought second hand.

There's a time when I had to find out that Iobit's software really suckz. We did such an update of all drivers that were ancient and couldn't go online anymore.

I then installed a new W 10, but didn't know that you can easily uninstall the update in seconds, by right clicking on the "Updated" driver.

That will as well explain your problems with your net card and why you couldn't go online for a while.

Why would all drivers be from very old to ancient, after all the updates, etc? It makes you believe that you had to do it.

I gotta agree with guys on here who believe that most problems are homemade. You don't need all this free Avast, AVG, Ieomi, etc, because it only slows down your system at start up and it causes really huge problems.

It's a billion bucks business and of course do people lie like moddafaggas when it comes to their income source, a software company.

Trans, please don't trust those fishy companies and do not trust their products.

Your sticking keyboard was something else, maybe just too old? G'Day, mate.

Good point in that ignorant users don't know how to stop unnecessary programs from starting up or even what they are--or indeed how to fix any other problem. Thai techs generally have poor software skills. Hence the resort to reinstallation. Been so long, I can't even remember when I last reinstalled; never any need to. :)

I'm not really attacking the practice. Cleaning up junk files etc. is desirable but implicit in my point earlier to RigPig's non sequitur or was it PigRig is that Windows has its own built-in disk cleaner, among other programs that replace the supposedly "necessary" third-party utilities, to do just that and more. Re: Firefox or Chrome, I just use addons to get the cache and cookies as needed. In fact I love Self-Destructing Cookies on Firefox as it deletes the cookie soon as the tab is closed.

Some system cleaners, BTW, are too aggressive or misleading; and even CCleaner used to "clean" the prefetch by default.  Having said that, I've know users to do absolutely nothing in the way of maintenance for nearly a decade and their systems still ran just fine. 'Course their systems were pretty much static and they didn't download from the Dark Web and didn't surf to porno sites. ;) Sometimes users think their systems are slow merely because their browser page load speed has slowed for some reason . . . .

Do you have file history turned on?  Did you have an external backup of your books?  All of my data files are saved to several external SSDs.  I also have non-sensitive files saved to the cloud.  Having operating systems go bad in the past and losing the data stored on the system drive, I learned that I needed to keep my data where it would be safe.  I now have so much redundancy that I don't expect to lose data ever again.

Here's what you're looking for. But please wait and let me try it out before you update yours.

Trans, you can use this program and you'll have more options that you had before. Free of viruses.

              I've tried it right now.

So how do I uninstall MS Edge, One Drive ( and other MS apps I don't want), or as it appears you can ONLY disable them?  I ONLY want stuff I want not MS spyware, that their software won't uninstall even if I choose NOT to use it!!!

The OS is <deleted>, invasive to the max, and buggy as all he11!!  I should be able to choose what I run and have installed chewing up my storage, but you can't as far as I can see.  Tow the line and be happy if that is your wish, it's not mine!  What happened to freedom of choice, ahhhh didn't fit the Gates marketing strategy... REMEMBER Netscape... same same and not much different if you ask me!!

EVERY so called or self professed "EXPERT" on here is running something to do something, critisise it all you want but you all have sensitive data on your computer, do what you want.

Running MS operating systems and no aftermarket Anti virus etc. is a gamble I am not prepered to go with considering it's past reputation, no matter what the excuses!!

Changes coming to the Windows 10 operating system (i.e., like going from 1607 to 1703) and Windows Office products features upgrade schedule...and most likely the update support.   More info at this website...included some partial quotes from the website.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/3191237/microsoft-windows/microsoft-switches-to-twice-yearly-windows-10-update-plan.html

Quote

Windows is committing to a predictable twice-per-year feature release schedule, targeting September and March of each year, aligning with Office 365 ProPlus. The next Windows 10 feature update will be targeted for September 2017.

Each Windows 10 feature release will be serviced and supported for 18 months. This is consistent with our current Windows 10 approach, but adds further clarity and predictability to organizations by aligning with Office 365 ProPlus.

Quote

That's a significant turning of the update screws. For the past three Win10 versions (er, "feature updates")—1511, 1607, 1703—Microsoft's been able to churn out new versions every eight months. Now the devs are officially on a six-month upgrade schedule, with the next version of Win10 due in September. Get used to seeing "version 1709."

Starting October 13, 2020, Office 365 ProPlus or Office perpetual in mainstream support will be required to connect to Office 365 services. Office 365 ProPlus will deliver the best experience, but for customers who aren't ready to move to the cloud by 2020, we will also support connections from Office perpetual in mainstream support.... This update does not change our system requirements or support policies for the Office perpetual clients, Office perpetual clients connecting to on-premises servers, or any consumer services.... We're providing more than three years' notice to give IT time to plan and budget for this change. Until this new requirement goes into effect in 2020, Office 2010, Office 2013 and Office 2016 perpetual clients will still be able to connect to Office 365 services.

Quote

(Defuzzing note: "Office perpetual" is the old-fashioned boxed version of Office, the MSI-based installed version. We're inching closer to Microsoft software as a rental service.)

There's no need to uninstall One Drive, because it'a a free cloud storage program that enables you to have access to all your files and photos from any PC wherever you are. It's actually sad that they went down from 20 GB free space to only 5 GB, but still enough to keep important stuff there.

You can uninstall most stuff by using the control panel and should you have privacy reasons for not using W 10, here's the solution.

I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security to make sure that my data is protected. Of course am I aware that there's no 100 % protection.

      https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

O&O ShutUp10 means you have full control over which comfort functions under Windows 10 you wish to use, and you decide when the passing on of your data goes too far.

Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated.

O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software, like so many other programs do these days!

I do a fair bit of self-cleaning too. I regularly check for programs I don't need and disable startup processes and programs. That's one of the features I like about my IOBit program. It tells me immediately if any program decides it wants to start up with my system... and also if my browser home page is about to be changed.

I respect CCleaner. It has improved a lot since its early days and is rather unobtrusive IMO.

I believe that IOBIT does all the tasks what your CCleaner is capable of. What I also appreciate of Advanced Ssytem Care Ultimate is the option "PC transfer to copy all from your desktop on your drive D, or elsewhere, should you plan a clean new install. Plus countless other good ones.

So why do you run two programs, if one is enough?

I'm only asking, we all have our opinion what might be good and what not. I think it's great to exchange experiences about programs what they're capable of and details about those we shouldn't even touch.

I just had an argument with a guy who wanted to tell me how to boot into safe mode by going a long and complicated way. I usually only right click on the Windows emblem, choose "run" and type msconfig . select safe more with networking and I'm good. And I'm using the same command to get back to my normal boot up.

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad that Trans came up with his font problem and after installing Winareo Tweaker, I've got my favorite Comic Sans size 12 now everywhere and I found out that this program is even capable to stop W 10 updates completely.

Thanks a lot, Trans. I wouldn't have this size and font without you. Once you get back to the 1703, just don't update your network driver with IOBIT and your internet will work.

Plus using this program, you can do way more with the fonts than you can with your current version.

Please give it a try and use your preferable size. You'll be surprised. No virus, no malware, no problem. All fonts are changed to Comic Sans now which I'm also using for documents. Really great program.

If you have a privacy concern (what is sent to MS) with Win 10 have a look at this:-

Maybe this can allay your concerns? Before attempting registry changes, either back up your Registry or make sure you set up a system restore first. YMMV :whistling:

In the words of an old TV cops show (Hill St Blues?), "Be careful out there".

And please consider the other programs of the link you've posted as well. For example the font changer with plenty other nice stuff.

I've installed it because Trans had issues with the fonts and got now all in my preferred Comic Sans, size 12 font.( Winaero Tweaker)

Thanks to the original OP, I've learned so much about the new 1703 and tools to make W 10 to a much better one. Cheers

No, I haven't had need for that yet. I'm not sure if the Pro version has that function.
