Spokesman insists no cover-up of cabinet’s decision on Chinese submarine deal

BANGKOK: -- Government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Tuesday that he didn’t inform the media about the cabinet’s decision last week approving the Royal Thai Navy’s plan to procure one Yuan-class submarine from China at 13.5 billion baht because the issue was stamped confidential and also reporters did not ask about it.

He insisted that the government had no intention to cover up the submarine procurement issue and that the project was transparent and went through proper procedure.

He defended that 40-70 issues were proposed to the cabinet each week and, hence, it was not possible for him to inform the media of all the issues and he would pick only issues which are of public interest.

Lt-Gen Sansern said that the submarine procurement was a government-to-government deal and was in accordance with the military’s long-term defence strategic plan to deal with security problem in the future.

Blah blah BS BS so was it confidential or was it cos no one asked? Or was it that the public wouldn't be interested in their government spending 13.5 billion baht or is it just that they have absolute control of the country and anyone that says anything will be off to re-education camp quicker than you can say junta.?

So it was confidential, but he would have told reporters if they had asked about it, and didn't think that the public would be interested in them spending 13.5 Billion baht on a bloody submarine! I would like to hear his explanation of how this waste of money fits in to the long term defense plan.

and why didn't they ask about it?

Maybe because they were told to shut up, or else? Maybe because of the condescending and belittling way Prawit answers their questions? Maybe because of the angry and choleric statements Prayuth issues when referring to reporters?

While the military has said then need these subs I have not heard a word "FOR WHAT"

No one has explained what they are going to be used for Is this a national security issue? I think not

The Thai people have a right to know where their tax dollars have gone to and for what purpose

as long as they have organized a sub rescue vehicle as well as I am sure it will be needed considering the lack of maintenance it will get and the crew training(as well as those that built them), hopefully they will not take them into deep water

He has a point.  It is not for the government to inform the media that they are wasting vast sums of money.

Why bother to inform. They are non accountable to the citizens and need not face an election but mostly because they have self written amnesty and guns.

Indeed, no cover up.

The decision has been made.

End of story. No discussion.

That's right. Decision made and end of story. Just hope the submarines will not end up like the aircraft carrier (USD336 M) or the broken airship (350M Baht) or the GT200 (800M Baht). They will probably approved in secret the purchase of T-84 Oplot tanks which is just a meagre amount of 8.3 B Baht. Elected governments are scared stiff to approve due to public uproar. Coup government really care less.

Transparent means transparent. No, deputy PM, we don't wanna know how you breathe. Yes, deputy PM, we do wanna know when you're spending 13.5 billion baht of our money (yes, I pay income tax, buy overpriced electronics and wine and don't send money home) on submarines.

This contempt for your fellow Thais will be your downfall. Let them eat cake comes to mind.

But it is transparent. Crystal clear. 'We want them so we're having them, end of.'

Does the price include delivery or does it have to be collected by a Thai crew?
