A young woman arriving on her own from Brazil. Why didn't her 'friend' meet her at the airport or arrange for reliable transportation upon her arrival?

In the past several months, I have seen taxi drivers becoming much more aggressive in refusing fares and/or taking advantage of customers who don't know their way around Bangkok.

Women must be extra alert under the current circumstances.

While it's reasonable to expect people to take reasonable caution for their own safety, it should also be reasonable to expect that a registered taxi with a permit to operate at an international airport is 'reliable transportation'.

I think if every solo female passenger was met at the airport there'd be a bit of a congestion problem!

Do be careful not to suggest it was her own fault......

I do not believe in a New York moment that this was her own fault.  What I do know is what I would do if a friend of mine was arriving for a first time visit to Thailand by his/herself.  I have had too many bad experiences with taxi drivers -- especially in recent times - to expect anything 'reasonable' about a taxi providing reliable transportation.  It really is a crap shoot.  The whole system needs to be overhauled.

I am certainly not blaming the victim, However, if I had a friend, male or female, arriving in Thailand for the first time, I would meet them at the airport to insure their safe transport to their hotel, etc.  I don't blame the victim.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  I have heard to many stories and also have personal experience with unscrupulous taxi drivers.  My message was to 'take care of your friends'.

Yeah fair enough. It got me thinking about the junta, sorry..... the 'caring, friendly government of smiles' needing to ensure better pre-employment background check standards for anyone involved in the tourism industry.

Cannot understand how the taxi driver has not been apprehended almost immediatley ???

I recently flew in to Don Mueang airport from Roi Et.

Had to wait at a turnstyle thing. Got a ticket for taxi. The taxi driver had to actually come in and escort me to his taxi. Lots of checks and balances with ticket , on site security etc.

Confused !!

From another post:-

Taxi driver who attacked Brazilian model already double rapist"

"CCTV showed that the victim had not used the taxi rank but got in a taxi not registered at the airport that had just delivered other passengers."

You would be far less safe in an Uber vehicle than a regular taxi. In San Francisco all taxi drivers have background checks done

This is Thailand mate, not San Francisco . No background checks needed .

So Uber IS the safest option here because of the online tracking.

Why didn't she just take the airport train like most people to the nearest BTS station and then it would be a short taxi ride to Thonglor.   The taxi drivers at the airport should be avoided. UBER is a good alternative too .

Blame the victim as usual "balo"  Not even "Berkshire" wants to defend the Thai on this topic.

Interested to know why this thread is still open when the accused has already been caught, or have two different tourists from South America been raped?

Just askin'

Didn't you read my post ? I am not blaming the victim but the taxi drivers that should be avoided. So the airport train or UBER is a safer option for a woman travelling alone in Bangkok. That was my point. Unfortunately she was not warned.

Not everybody that comes to Thailand is aware of the reputation of the taxi drivers at the airport. "Most people" are probably not even aware that you can get a train from the airport to the nearest BTS station. "UBER" What is that? (OK I know that it's an alternative cab service - I've never used them, but would a visitor from Brazil know?) You assume that "most people" should think as if they've lived in Bangkok for a while and should know all the pitfalls. "She was not warned" - are you suggesting that all visitors coming to Bangkok should be advised to "avoid the taxi drivers" at the Airport?

The only people to blame here are those who issue the laws and police the country. They either do not understand their own peoples previous actions or do not care about what they have done in the past.

Create a Sex offenders list and ban anyone from jobs that have contact with the likes of tourists, children and females

But I suppose the country runs on sex so that's a no no.

Most people who visit have been lured here by false advertising and do not know the risks as they where told its the Land of Smiles and should have been told about the scams.

Its only a small problem to many when a female gets raped yet other countries put the rapist away for life in some cases.

UBER is all over the world, also in Brazil .  The young generation knows about them for sure.

OK, maybe I should get out more in my later years! Thank you for "cherrypicking" your answer, and I note that you ignore the rest of my comments.

Nonsense, You are blaming the victim, and if the victim was a Thai and not a farang you apologists would not reply to this thread.

Nonsense again ,  if the victim was a Thai I would still respond in the same way .   Try to use your brain .
