CGW
Let's think about this, we can invest in Education, infrastructure, road safety or a lot of other things that will benefit society Or we can but submarines? Way to go Thailand! Following the fine example set by the USA, invest money in military at the cost of the country!! Peace & security at any price

Well, there is a certain monument in Bangkok that commemorates the Franco-Thai war of 1940/41. Link : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_Monument_(Thailand) Didn't amount to much though. jaltsc
"Chief of the Defence Forces Gen Surapong Suwana-adth has affirmed that submarines are vital to national security." Why does a country need submarines for national security when it has a history of "surrendering" at the first sign of foreign invasion? It would seem more appropriate to use the money to build more toll booths and collect money in order for the invaders to use the public roads. MarkusAUST
Perhaps the Government would get laughed at and criticised less if they explained why theses subs are considered vital. I can think of absolutely no reason at all and many reasons why not.

cmsally
I read something in an international defense site a couple of days ago. It said the Chinese made sure that the submarines were of a type that could not cross the Gulf of Siam (too shallow). Therefore if China had "serious business" in the South China Sea the Thais would not be able to meddle. They were not that worried if they were deployed to the West Coast as only the Indians there. Anyone know if this is true regarding , sizes, depth etc

Becker
The only credible threat to the national security/government of Thailand comes from within. Sorry boys, when your time's up no amount of subs can protect you. Or are you procuring them in order to do a runner if the foul material hits the fan? chrisinth
"Chief of the Defence Forces Gen Surapong Suwana-adth has affirmed that submarines are vital to national security." Where are these submarines to be based? What will be their operating area(s). I would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting that discovers the deepest depth in the GOT is only 85 metres with an average depth of about 58 metres. Not much room for evasive actions there is there? Kindergarden paddling pool.
