Supreme Commander: submarines necessary for national security

BANGKOK 27th April 2017 (NNT) - Chief of the Defence Forces Gen Surapong Suwana-adth has affirmed that submarines are vital to national security.

Gen Surapong this week presided over a meeting attended by military leaders and senior police. They discussed progress in the submarine procurement contract with China and confirmed their importance to Thailand’s defense.

The meeting also discussed the 11th ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting and the first ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise, both of which are being organized to take place in Thailand from November 13th - 22nd on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan has ordered related agencies to closely follow the situation on the Korean peninsula. The government has been coordinating with Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul to receive the latest updates.

Wasn't the same claim made for the navy's sun lounger/aircraft carrier?

They said the same thing for the blimp which will improve intelligence collection or the GT200 which will save lives. Both eventually were duds and a waste of money.

Let's think about this, we can invest in Education, infrastructure, road safety or a lot of other things that will benefit society

Or we can but submarines? :shock1:

Way to go Thailand!

Following the fine example set by the USA, invest money in military at the cost of the country!!

Peace & security at any price :saai:

Does the Supreme Commander have small dick, and need something large and tubular to make up for his feelings of inadequacy?

There's a credible threat from the Laotian navy.

And why would the THai Police need to be invited to a discussion on submarines and national security?

Why does a country need submarines for national security when it has a history of "surrendering" at the first sign of foreign invasion?

It would seem more appropriate to use the money to build more toll booths and collect money in order for the invaders to use the public roads.

The biggest problem will be finding a shirt large enough to carry ALL of the Supreme Commanders medals. He might have to wear two shirts at the same time.[emoji44]

Depends who's angle you view that from. A few would have thought it a great investment.

Perhaps the Government would get laughed at and criticised less if they explained why theses subs are considered vital. I can think of absolutely no reason at all and many reasons why not.

It's a matter of national security and thus cannot be disclosed!

I read something in an international defense site a couple of days ago.

It said the Chinese made sure that the submarines were of a type that could not cross the Gulf of Siam (too shallow). Therefore if China had "serious business" in the South China Sea the Thais would not be able to meddle. They were not that worried if they were deployed to the West Coast as only the Indians there.

Anyone know if this is true regarding , sizes, depth etc

Please dont give them any new ideas.

The only credible threat to the national security/government of Thailand comes from within.

Sorry boys, when your time's up no amount of subs can protect you. Or are you procuring them in order to do a runner if the foul material hits the fan?

Where are these submarines to be based? What will be their operating area(s).

I would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting that discovers the deepest depth in the GOT is only 85 metres with an average depth of about 58 metres. Not much room for evasive actions there is there?

Anyway, they probably have a code that can neutralise the computer system if needed.

Well, you've been fine ever since the Burmese and then Japanese put their feet up here. Where's this new threat coming from?

Yes. Explaining why they are necessary would be a good start.
