PHUKET: The new Army Region 4 commander has announced his agenda for Phuket, ticking off a list of at least a dozen problems he feels need urgent resolution.

During his visit last week, Lt Gen Piyawat Nakwanit said that he was “generally satisfied with the state of tourism in Phuket”, but that getting rid of ‘powerful people’ and officers who unlawfully practice their duties would set Phuket on the path to progress.

“Our biggest priority should be to stop ‘mafia’ and other so-called ‘powerful people’ from using their influence to benefit themselves illegally at the expense of others. It is imperative that we get rid of these people,” said the general.

Several government and private sector officers joined the meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall, where the issues under discussion ranged from beach management, public transport management and public land encroachment, to human trafficking, immigration, illegal tour guides and security.

One of the major issues Gen Piyawat focused on was public land encroachment.

sigh....

Another one promising to clean up the mafia and powerful families!

I think the latest govenor is much more of a realist, he's only promising to clean up the rubbish and beautify the Island.

This is not the job of the Army. The problem is the corruption is so rampant in the other law enforcement and civil agencies it might need an honest army officer to tackle the problem.

They would have to find one from an alien country!

As a mark of his sincerity the Lt General called on Uncle Too to resign and immediately submitted his resignation.

Nah, not really.

The Military has more power than the local police,  so I wish the commander  good luck,  and to get a transfer after  going after

the rich and powerful families of Phuket  as  they will be after him for affecting their fortunes,

Geezer

A good start, if he want's to clean other things then wearing a bullet proof vest is advisable.

A few days ago I was sitting in a restaurant on the border (won't say where) and I was with a friend who lives there.

We were right beside the border bridge, the Immigration and police were right above when 2 men swam across the river with a floating package , about 1 metre wide and about half that high.

Right under the nose of the authorities they took this across and then waded back and disappeared.

What chance has this guy got---- 0

Give the Army a chance! The Governor's, Politicians, and Police have all been part of the corruption problem in Phuket.

They eagerly took money to increase the corruption in Phuket, so give the General a chance!

Ahhhh, you know the military has been in control for nearly 3 years.

Just how long do you "give the General a chance" for????

He seems to be reading an old speech from a few years ago.   Same old empty promises.

Yes, someone needs to tell this guy that in the era of social media and travel websites, you can't just issue a press release to the world stating all the problems are fixed on Phuket.

Prospective tourists have access to real time information and reviews.

The can easily find out nothing has changed here.
