A HIGH-RANKING police officer accused of buying the services of an underage prostitute turned himself in yesterday as local authorities in Mae Hong Son stepped up surveillance of human trafficking and vice in the province.

According to Mae Hong Son police station superintendent Satasak Pimolthip, Chai Prakan police station deputy superintendent Pol Lt Col Mongkol Panti had acknowledged sexual involvement with a girl younger than 15.

It was reported that after Mongkol was told the allegation against him, police conducted a brief interrogation before releasing him. He is alleged to have bought sex from the young girl brought by prostitute provider Kwanhatai Ruekudom, who has already been arrested for human trafficking.

Mongkol is accused of having sex with the girl in his home in Mae Hong Son while he worked in the province.

Officials in Mae Hong Son have been trying to repair the province’s damaged reputation after a large human trafficking and sex network was exposed there. Steps are being taken to avoid similar activity in the future.

Mae Hong Son district chief Phisit Bunkitanan said that local authorities held a meeting with local businesses, hotels and restaurants to discuss prevention of human trafficking. More than 50 representatives attended.

“We need to urgently solve this chronic problem [human trafficking] since it has already made headlines nationwide and harmed the reputation of the province,” Phisit said.

On Friday night, the Mae Hong Son Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office and local authorities led a team to inspect businesses in Pai, another famous tourist attraction.

“We need to urgently solve this chronic problem [human trafficking] since it has already made headlines nationwide and harmed the reputation of the province,” Phisit said.

Due to modern technology, I'm afraid Phisit is dreaming if he thinks this story is confined to Thailand. Most of S.E.Asia knows and likely the story will get wider coverage.

Won't have to worry about that when the new media laws are enacted !

<deleted>? They conducted a brief interrogation and then released the <deleted> perv? After he acknowledged sexual involvement with a girl under 15.

Utterly disgraceful. Any normal person would be in jail by now, but because he is a top copper they let him go. I am sure the girls families won't be impressed.

I find it a sad indictment that the local authorities are more concerned for the reputation of the area, rather than what should be a very deep concern that young girls are not only being trafficked, but raped as well.  Again, their first concern is money rather than the moral issue!

They can now claim to be a Hub of Paedo-Police.

Nope, you had it right at the beginning.

The first and foremost priority is always face.

I wish the Western press would grab hold of this case. It might spur Prayuth into sorting out the corrupt band of thieves.

Every single policemen involved in the ring should be paraded in front of the nation and put in jail for a minimum of 15 years. The overranked Lt. Col Panti should be incarcerated for life.

It is time for this level of corruptness to be stamped on.

ANother example of the extraordinary efficiency of the Thai Police.  In most countries it can take 15 minutes or more for a policeman to reach the scene of a crime.  In Thailand they are already on the scene!

"Steps are being taken in order to avoid similar activity in the future" meaning showing the BIB in these other areas how to cover up their pedophilia acts. And did you notice that the supervisor said "involvement with a young girl" and no" having sex" with a young girl ?

Note : "We need to solve this problem because it has made headlines nationwide and harmed the reputation of the province" ... rather than : "We need to solve this problem because it's appalling, and it harms the victims".

In other words what really counts is appeasing the media and holding up the reputation of provinces. Sickening.

No less sickening is the fact that the guy obviously doesn't see what's wrong with his wording.

What keeps amazing me is that most officials are worried about their own or their Provinces reputation,

how about the young Girls and their families. Saving face for one selves but not for the victims seems to be most important.

Who`s to say the child`s family did not know about it? Nothing would surprise me any more.

Girl under the age of 15. So how old is she? 7, 8, 9 up to 14? The fact is he raped a little girl. Hope this twisted individual does not conveniently do a vanishing act.

Prostitution. Sex slaves. Human trafficking etc is/are everywhere, and not just isolated to just one province.

Get real! This is Thailand!

Remember what the report stated? Foreigners only think of Thailand as a place for sex, and yet their own kind, on their own door-step, high ranking officials at that, are involved with underaged sex!

That animal should be in custody and not allowed the privilege and luxury of freedom, unlike the victims who were no doubt forced to perform disgusting acts, in fear and against their will. Poor things.

Place must have really changed since I visited there over 20 years ago.  There was one sad hotel and a Main Street with not much going on.  A rather quiet place to say the lease. Now there is an entertainment district.  Times do change, not always for the better.

When opportunity knocks one must make the most of it. When it comes to serve and protect we all know who comes first.
