Quarrying operations in Mon state face curbs

The Mon state divisional government has announced that it will not issue new quarrying licenses in Mount Kalama forest reserve in Paung township of Mon state where conflict is simmering between locals and mining companies, The Irrawaddy Online reported on Friday.

 

Mon state Minister for Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources Dr Min Kyi Win told The Irrawaddy that the state government would also slash the number of existing quarrying firms operating inside the forest reserve as instructed by the Union Minister for Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources.
