Thai logic

Recommended Posts

One of my expectations of deciding to live in Thailand 5 years ago was to enjoy learning about an entirely new culture.

I've not been disappointed. Every day, my wife and I have a good laugh at something related to our cultural differences.

Story on telly today about a Thai guy that found a tortoise wandering down the soi in his MooBaan. It has some

rather pretty natural markings on its shell ..... and the markings are a little golden colour if the light is right.

BINGO ..... special lucky tortoise !!

The guy has already knocked back an offer of 500,000 baht for this tortoise.

When I asked my wife why he didn't take the 500,000, she said "lucky tortoise ....he keep. Maybe he win lottery now."

mmmmmm .... well, it seems to me that the guy has already got lucky with an offer of 500,000 from some nitwit.

Nah .... he'll keep the tortoise and win the lottery instead.

Ask your wife-girlfriend what she'd do in this situation. Take the half-mill or keep the critter.

I'm guessing most farangs would say "Give me the 500,000 now .... and best of luck with your new tortoise."

I was driving down a deserted country road in Isaan, when I had a blowout. Not having a spare I finally found a house and asked the Thai lady if I can use her phone to call for help. As she opens the door for me to come in, a Three Legged Pig ran out.  I asked in my best Thai "why does that Pig only have three legs?" She said that they had a fire and the pig woke everybody up and then went back and brought the dog out. I said "but why does the Pig only have three legs?"  She said well another time my son was playing in the klong and he fell in and the Pig ran to the shed and got a rope and saved him. Again I asked "why does the Pig only have three legs?" She replied.........Falang, you no undstand........ after all the pig did for us, it didn't seem right to eat him all at once.

True story !

Actually a similar thing happened to me.

I was driving down a deserted road in Isaan when I saw a three legged chicken. I couldn't believe it so I sped up to get a closer look.

60 kph and the chicken was accelerating away fro me.

80, 100 kph and I still couldn't catch it.

It finally turned and ran under a house. I stopped and saw an old lady sitting under the house.

I said to the lady "Did you see that three legged chicken?". She said "Yes, I breed them. My husband, son and I all like drumsticks so I only have to kill one chicken to get three drumsticks"

I said "That's amazing. What do they taste like?".

She replied "I don't know. I've never been able to catch one".

True story.

A tortoise came out from the undergrowth where I was having some beers with Thai friends. Poor thing got covered in talc and mauled about by a group of pissed up Thais!!

by the way, no one won the lottery.

For some obscure reason my part-time Thai cleaner arrives at the house and immediately takes the garbage to throw away (god knows where...).

Clearly it would make more sense to finish cleaning earlier (with the added rubbish AFTER cleaning the house) as it would be more economical in both time and petrol, but I haven't the heart to point this out as she's such a genuinely lovely lady, albeit not very bright and a bad cleaner !

Which only proves that my logic is also slightly skewed to my own biases - caring about trustworthy/nice people and not wanting to hurt their feelings by pointing out their 'brain failures'.

My gf has some strange logic regarding the lottery, she speaks to her brother, who is a monk, on the phone and writes down all sorts of numbers then turns to me and says some number that has no relation to her scribbling !!
For example:

Then says to me 505 !! [emoji848]

Hard thing to calculate.....Over the years I've learned that my wife & I can get to the same goal - if we let one or the other handle it - yet be 180 degrees off in the approach/thought process.....It makes sense once the result is obtained....But it's interesting in between.....

No way to think that western logic should always prevail....If so, it only exposes our narrow scope.....

You asked her about the calculations much? Seems to be based on the number 2. So 055 is the odd one out. Why she do the calcs?

Looks like somebody is running an illegal 3 number lottery. Those are the amounts bet on those numbers. 20 +20 +20 baht equals 60 baht bet on that number. So must be a good number?

As I understand, any set of numbers is equally likely to come up, but if you bet on one that has fewer bets on it, you keep a bigger share of the winnings.  So best to bet on the bad numbers

I dont think it works that way. Not a 'totaliser' type system but a fixed pay out. According to Wikki the pay out for the 'underground' 3 number lottery is 1 to 500. So a 100 baht bet will win you 50000 baht.

But of course you only have a 1 in 1000 chance of winning and it is totally random as the winning numbers are taken from the Govt lottery results.
