Taking Stand On Final Day, Jenphop Says He Tried To Avoid Crash

Jenphop Viraporn walks out of the Ayutthaya Provincial Court during a recess Friday.

 

AYUTTHAYA — Jenphop Viraporn took the stand on the last day of his trial Friday to defend himself against the prosecution’s case that his recklessness was to blame for the deaths of two grad students in a fiery wreck last year.

 

At the heart of his defense, the 39-year-old scion of a luxury car dealership testified that he tried and failed to slow his speeding Mercedes-Benz before it slammed into a Ford on an Ayutthaya provincial highway, killing the two victims in March 2016. He also disputed police assertions that he resisted sobriety tests.

He tried and failed to slow? It isn't easy when you are doing 200 kph or more is it?  Was he trying to take off?

Stunning refusal to admit, even in the face of serious evidence that his reckless driving ended two peoples lives and yet, he thinks saying "well, I did hit the brakes." makes it all excusable? No! Not buying that. Go to jail. Stay there a long time. Understand what you did.

Has money, so not going to happen, is it?

I will give him credit for turning up though, rather than doing a runner like the Red Bull tosser.

He hit the Fiesta at 200kph, so, if he was trying to slow down does it mean he was doing 300kph previously?

 

Manslaughter, murder, however you classify it, two innocent people are dead, he deserves to be put away for a very, very long time.

I don't think that Thailand has a crime of manslaughter.

 

In the UK I believe manslaughter and causing death by dangerous driving ( which is what he would have been charged with in the UK) both can lead to the life sentence.. The judge sentencing may well stipulate how long should be served before  the convicted person can be considered for release on licence. I should imagine in the UK he would be looking at life - with at least 12 years before licence.

Community service at a timing of his convenience. Just like the little charmer who sent nine people to their death by ramming their minibus on the overpass and sending it crashing to the ground below.

Three months voluntary service in a hospital at a time which is convenient to her social engagements.

yes I tried to slow down while blind drunk but got it all mixed up .................. it was not my fault .....I was drunk after a wonderful night out and was driving my car as I always do when I am drunk..........they got in my way, if they had not been there it wouldn't have happened..........well they are dead now

The court will soon find that the Fiesta was reversing at 150 Kmh and Jenphop saved a lot of people by getting his Mercedes in the way of the Fiesta before it hurt anyone else.

This is (yet) another chance for the Thai policing and judicial system to show the world that the rich are not above the law in Thailand. 

 

Me thinks they will fail (yet again) - and this will be another straw on the camel's back.

 

The camel being all the various reasons why every year less and less western tourists come to Thailand (or live there).

Still amazed he made it through the toll-booth. Maybe he was taking his "medicine" when he "lost control" of his vehicle? (I know the date is incorrect but am pretty sure this is a video of the crash?)

Thailand has a law against causing death by reckless driving, if that helps.

A verdict is expected in the next 45 days so still lots of time for negotiations. Yes I guess at 200 kms per hour its hard to avoid an accident which this "hero" claims he was trying to do. I am surprised he did not try "The Devil Made Me Do It" defense.
