BANGKOK: -- The producers of four TV programmes are to be fined for airing inappropriate content, including obscene language and speculation on winning lottery numbers.

The broadcasting committee of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission agreed to impose the fines at its meeting on Thursday.

Deputy secretary general Phakdee Manawet said the producers of “Tuen Ma Khui” (“Wake Up to Talk”) on the MCOT HD channel and “Toop Toh Khao” (“Slamming the News Desk”) on Amarin TV HD would be fined Bt50,000 each for carrying speculation about winning lottery numbers.

He said the makers of “Tuen Ma Khui” would be fined an additional Bt50,000 as a result of complaints the committee received regarding violations of public morality.

A Bt50,00 fine will also be imposed on the producers of Bright TV’s show “Khun Pak Yak Khui” (“Itching to Talk”) over the use of indecent language during a televised discussion about sex.

Administrators at Channel 8, Thairath TV and Work Point Entertainment are to be formally advised to be more careful about programmes involving superstitions and lottery speculation.

But the gun wielding and and violence on the family viewing Thai  lakorns will doubtless continue unabated..... ministry of culture and NBTC are silent as they too are mesmerized nightly  by this entertainment equivalent of junk food.

Agree with Lemon above. Murder, road carnage, fights, DV, rapes, finger pointing, prostitute's and underage use of minors for sexual favour by Government officials and others are OK on the idiot box.

What did Itching to talk say; something that described an appendage or an act of sex?

Very swift to report the fines of the offending TV shows, but the boys who engaged in underage sex may not face a court or a fine in the near future.

Finger pointing? lol

What do you suggest? The classic duck-mouth pointing (as many Thais do)?

Imagine this conversation:

A) - Where is the toilet?

B) - Over there.

A) - Where?

B) - There!

A) - Where? Can you point?

B) - No.

A) - "Angrily, walks around looking"

B) - Not there, there!

A) - Where?

B) - There!

A) - FOR F SAKE POINT!!!

B) - No. It's not good to point.

A) - .... "farts a smelly one"

B) - Over there "points his finger"

A) - Thank you!

B) - ....

I could think of many better words than Junk to describe Lakorn soaps!

I very briefly caught a scene in a Thai series where a man was attempting to rape a woman. Well, he was holding her down for a prolonged period of time and trying to kiss her. He seemed quite indignant that she was not being consensual. After their little one-two, he finally stopped. It seemed like once everything had calmed down she jestingly said "What are you like, you horny bugger?' and it was just back to normal (whatever normal is for Thailand and Thai series)

Anywho, the point is that all was forgiven after his attempted rape. It was just seen as some harmless horseplay. This to me is seriously offensive as it completely makes a mockery of how disgusting and vulgar rape is. But by all means, please be sure to cover up alcohol labeling, or even better, no alcohol at all. We want these shows to be as unrealistic as possible.

"...complaints the committee received regarding violations of public morality...use of indecent language during a televised discussion about sex."

It's amazing that these people who complain continue to watch the programs in question. Don't they realize that the remote has an On/Off button and a button to change channels? Guaranteed, they will be watching the same shows again and getting their jollies. They just complain to cover up that they are getting excited by what they think is "dirty" content.

One more level of hypocrisy in Thai culture. No different than all the western religious and political leaders who complain about the same thing and then are caught trawling in public rest rooms and on the internet.

Are fortune tellers considered to be superstition...? Doesn't Prayut confide in fortune tellers...? And the BiB...?

Also many other Asians including many past Thai leaders of all flavors.

The one that gets me is when they are showing the goals from a previous nights football match and they cover up the advertising hoardings to the point where you can't actually see the goal anymore.
