Piracy crackdown means the end for once thriving Aranyaprathet market

The once bustling Rong Klua market in Aranyaprathet in Sa Kaew province is facing closure.

The traders are blaming the military and police for stripping the market of pirated goods so no one is buying anything there any more.

Thai Rath reported after a visit to the formerly busy market that there were now more sellers than buyers. And all because of the crackdown on illegal and fake goods.

The market opened 17 years ago but has never been through a time like this.

A Sa Kaew traders' group online said that ever since the crackdown the trade has fallen away. It was now only a matter of time before the market shut, they said.

They believe the only way out is for the traders to switch selling their wares to online trading meaning the end of the market.

I am surprised to see it go this far. Generally they crack down to show who's boss and then they allow things to recover. There must be some real conflict between the uniforms and the sellers. It can't be about piracy and copyright issues. Fake stuff is available everywhere.

Have you guys also seen those huge whiskybottles for sale? And all the supercheap booze and cigarettes from big brands.

I bought some of those ciggies but they tasted like smoking dried grass.

I wonder if that booze is ever tested.

Thai's can't compete in any marketplace unless they have an edge. At this market it was counterfeit goods. I would love to

see Home Depot or Lowe's open in Thailand. How about a Walmart. They have them in China.

These kinds of market are like cockroaches , you know you have killed

a few in one place only to find out that they have appeared elsewhere,

the lure of easy money is too great to not continue later with more

favorable conditions....

I don't know why Aranyaprathet is being targeted. The same fake goods are available in every market across all of Thailand.

Someone probably wants it closed as they want the land for something else, like a new casino.

curious blame; because i cannot lie and cheat i am poor; pity thailand cannot channel their talents of copying into something that is actually productive

I thought one of the authorities objectives is to create employment it appears lately here they are doing the opposite !

In this case they are stopping criminal activities and is one of the rare occasions I support their actions.

I dont think it will be the end of it ---before it was located in Poipet (other-side of the boarder) as most visitors go to Aranyaprthet  to cross & Thais are allowed to wander back & forth --then lots of arguments over who owns this or that temple on the boarders up country, all started when some soap opera lady mention one of them & said it really belonged to Thailand. The troops brought in the odd skirmish & the Thais kept closing the boarders.... So they made a new market Thai side....I guess they will go back to the Cambo side if life gets to difficult...all goods can be sold there.

Is there a reason your entire post is in italics? Curious.

You're quite right.

Maybe it has something to do with the thickness of the envelope.

Hard to decide which is better to buy in these markets.  Fake goods or rejects.

What a pity....... This is only one more move that has taken many Thai's out of producing an comfortable income.  This Junta is responsible for so many hard working Thai's having no source of income and forced to go back and live in the country with no income and no means to feed their families...... Starvation is in the future of many Thai's since the Army is running the country....... Starvation vs Submarines..... I think it will be 'submarines'

I think the present Govt. thinks that there are too many 'Poor' people in Thailand and wants to 'thin them out'....... The hi-so's and Junta know that there will always be enough of those 'Poor' that will survive so as to guarntee them of a sufficient supply of 'maids' and 'gardeners' and 'drivers' for them to hire....... So if a bunch of the 'Poor' die of starvation there will still be a good supply of servants for their 'hi-so' life styles........

First it was a crack down on sidewalk businesses which have been a way of life for centuries..... My wife has 6 relatives that sold 'fried pork' on the sidewalks and put 3 or 4 children thru universities...... First in the history of their families to finish University...... Now they are back in the villages and barely eating --- no more universities in their future, for sure............. Thank you to the present Army Govt......... Now the Army is closing down all those shops at Aranuphatet....... Many, many more Thai's without income............ Probably many of these poor Thais have sons in the Army....... When will the madness end?????

Well, no sympathy for that - good riddance. Fake goods are for fake people. My wife has a Louis Vuitton bag - she worked for it (she owns a business), and with honest money, bought the bag from Paragon. She gets pissed everytime she sees people with fake bags waiting for the bus or walking around. Buy real stuff, or buy unbranded stuff. "Replicas" are just as bad either.

People who need higher social status or recognition through extravagant purchases (like buying a handbag that costs the same as a mercedes or house) suffer from serious fake values as well. Resenting someone sensible enough to pay a reasonable price for imitation frippery has a tragic-comic edge to it.

What pirated products are they talking about? Handbags are all I can think of. I don't recall many DVDs or that type of product being sold at Rong Kleua.

I would have thought at this stage of Thailand's development that jobs (and tourism) were more important than protecting the dubious brand value of hi-end products.

I see many posts whining about something in Thailand that end with the madness question.

The answer in most cases is that it won't end.

Sigh.........

Perhaps I have become jaded the last few months since my country is currently run by The Cheeto in Chief who is mad as a hatter.

It's not from mercury poisoning either; its genetic.
