Brian Cant, Play School presenter, dies at 83

Children's presenter Brian Cant has died at the age of 83.

He was best known for presenting BBC's Play School for 21 years from 1964, and Play Away from 1971 to 1984.

His agent said he had been living with Parkinson's disease and died at Denville Hall, a retirement home often used by those in the entertainment industry.

A statement from the family said: "He lived courageously with Parkinson's disease for a long time."

Another face from my childhood, and my children's childhood has gone

Many, many Brits of a certain age grew up with this man on the telly. An absolute genius children's TV presenter.

Farewell "Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub.".

I do however, admit to having the the hots for Floella Benjamin (now Baroness Benjamin and still pretty hot) when she joined the show in 1974 (yes I was still watching Play School / Play Away at 16), I wonder why

EDIT They just don't make children's telly like this any more, this one includes Floella too :tongue:

.. and for those who really haven't a clue what I'm on about

I grew up with Brian Cant as well. Great kids presenter, as you say.Floella was a subject of my fantasies. Is she a baroness now? She was one of the main reasons i watched the prog. Sexy Eyes. And Trumpton, what can i say?

It wasn't PC back then, they made smutty jokes that went over the kids head, so you had things to laugh at as well as the kids.

Anyone know, was it: Hugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew etc, or 2 Pughs?

RIP Brian, John Noakes too.

Well, I spent my childhood years thinking there was a Hugh in there, but apparently they were twins:

"Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb."
