MAE HONG SON: -- The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has found that more than 270 rai (43 hectares) of forestry plantations have encroached on forestland in Mae Hong Son.

 

Pol Lt-Colonel Prawut Wongseenin, DSI deputy director-general, said on Tuesday that the DSI and local authorities had conducted an inspection at the Mae Yuam National Reserve Forest and Pai River Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in Mae Hong Son and found that 10 plantations had encroached on forestland.

 

The DSI conducted the inspection after it received a petition from a retired high-ranking officer in Mae Hong Son about illegal activity involving the registration of land deeds for plantations in protected forestland. The owners of the plantations are then entitled to cut down trees grown in the area and sell the wood on the open market legally.

 

Typically forestry plantation land deeds can only be registered on private land to grow valuable trees such as teak for timber.

Prawut said 278 rai of plantations had encroached on protected forestland with 111,100 trees registered in the plots.

 

He said many of the trees had already been cut down, a clear violation of the National Forest Reserve Act, adding that the DSI was treating it as a special case.

Will this end up like in Spain a few years back, when many expat's homes were plainly bulldozed down by the local authorities, as the deeds were not legal and constructions were made on protected shores?

 

This left dramatic images of the homeowners looking aghast at the rumble, with their luggage and belongings besides them - like in some 3rd grade war movie!!

why is it that the ones that issue the illegal deeds and the ones that get them are never hit up for it, their assets are never seized, they are not charged or jailed, no wonder they keep doing it. When will the authorities seize all the assets of both the issuer and receiver of illegal deeds to reimburse the country as well as charge them and lock them up. Problem is those in charge know they can be next as many also do the same thing so dont want to rock the boat, this is the reason there is so much graft and corruption in Thailand, those in charge are involved and do not want to lose what they have gained through their positions

First stop - jail those who issued the land deeds! Secondly, seize all their assets. And as for those who have built within the Mae Hong Song forest land let them give unequivocal evidence why they should not watch their premises being demolished!

re SPAIN, it was corrupt Mayors and agents, which gave the ok to build on (rustic land) green belt in the UK, innocent  homeowners lost the lot, but no mayors were made accountable. probably be the same in this case.
