China, U.S. agree aim of "complete, irreversible" Korean denuclearisation

BEIJING (Reuters) - China and the United States agreed that efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula should be "complete, verifiable and irreversible", Chinese state media said on Saturday, reporting the results of high level talks in Washington this week.

"Both sides reaffirm that they will strive for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," a consensus document released by the official Xinhua news agency said.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had said on Thursday that the United States pressed China to ramp up economic and political pressure on North Korea, during his meeting with top Chinese diplomats and defense chiefs.

China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui met Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis during the talks. Yang later met with U.S. President Donald Trump in the White House, where they also discussed North Korea, Xinhua reported.

The consensus document also highlighted the need to fully and strictly hold to U.N. Security Council resolutions and push for dialogue and negotiation, which has long been China's position on the issue.

Military-to-military exchanges should also be upgraded and mechanisms of notification established in order to cut the risks of "judgement errors" between the Chinese and U.S. militaries, the statement also said.

Chinese state media described the talks, the first of their kind with the Trump administration, as an upgrade in dialogue mechanisms between China and the United States, following on from President Xi Jiping's meeting with Trump in Florida in April.

Xi and Trump are next expected to meet again in Hamburg during the G20 Summit next month.

A day last week's talks, President Donald Trump said China's efforts to use its leverage with North Korea had failed, raising fresh doubts about his administration’s strategy for countering the threat from North Korea.

The death of American university student Otto Warmbier earlier this week, after his release from 17 months of imprisonment in Pyongyang, further complicated Trump’s approach to North Korea.

China, North Korea’s main trading partner, has been accused of not fully enforcing existing U.N. sanctions on its neighbour, and has resisted some tougher measures.

Washington has considered further "secondary sanctions" against Chinese banks and other firms doing business with North Korea, which China opposes.

Yeah, but . . .

North Korea is just a patsy. Kim Jong Un talks a good fight, but he knows that one false move will see him and his zombie republic wiped off the map.

The real threat to world peace comes from China and the US, leaders of a nuclear arms race that is bankrupting their economies and bringing the prospect of a third world war ever closer.

The pathetic attempt of the two superpowers to divert attention from their role in pushing the hands of the Doomsday Clock nearer to midnight than at any time since the last Cold War is as blatantly hypocritical as it is dangerous.

Instead of ganging up on North Korea,  the US and China should be joining forces to demand the restart of global disarmament talks and an immediate run-down of nuclear stockpiles.

Between them, they have enough missiles to destroy our world several times over. When will enough be enough?

The US and China are not going to war.  It would destroy both countries very quickly, and I mean economically, which is where their true powers are.  Something truly devastating would have to happen for either one to use nukes against the other.  Russia and Pakistan may be more worrisome.

China is completely insincere about this. If they meant it, N. Korea would be destitute overnight. Without Chinese support, the country and that ridiculous government and even more ridiculous leader, would cease to exist. There are major N. Korean banks and other companies, that operate openly within China, even though they are under sanctions. The Chinese despot leaders like N. Korea. They like the resources they get from them.

Believe anything the Chinese government says, at your own peril. As far as the US goes, as big as Cheeto likes to talk, he is a man with very small cajones. He will not do anything about Kim. Nothing.

None of the superpowers may WANT to go to war, but the chances of a war being started through human or computer error are considerable. If you do some research, you will find we have already come close on a number of occasions, including very recently. The only way to ensure we are not plunged into a nuclear Armageddon is to ban all nuclear weapons.

Just think what we Britain and all the other nuclear nations - particularly poor ones like India and Pakistan - could do with all the money they'd save.

Don't you think it would be a good idea if we took all the nukes away from the "kiddies" like Kim BEFORE depleting our defensive supply? :whistling:

And just how do you propose this should be done, other than as part of a international agreement on a nuclear weapons rundown?

Have you been saying that since the 1960's ?

The USA has reduced their Nuclear Weapons from 31 000 to 4000 .

NK do seem the most likely to use Nuclear weapons and Kim Jung ill does seem quite unstable

International Agreements are entered into by countries with something to lose and/or gain from the agreement, not by unstable rogue countries with a nutjob leader.

There are only 2 ways to shutdown a country like NK, cut off all trade til they starve and the residents revolt or blow them off the face of the Earth.
