Agriculture Ministry ready for EU fisheries review

BANGKOK, 26 June 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has prepared needed information for European Union (EU) inspectors who will be evaluating Thailand’s work against illegal fishing practices this July 1-15.

Minister of Agriculture Gen Chatchai Sarikulya has indicated officials from an EU commission on environment, maritime affairs and fisheries will be visiting Thailand this July 1-15 to evaluate its progress in combating Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing situation. He said his office has prepared all necessary data and that it is confident its intensified work has yielded strong results.

The minister elaborated his office has focused on registering fishing boats as well as vessels that support the industry such as oil tankers and is looking into better overseeing speed boats.

The ministry has been working at an accelerated pace since it was empowered by the National Council for Peace and Order to tackle IUU fishing. The Ministry of Labor has been working on the effort as well and has been registering fishermen and foreign laborers in the sector.

Gen Chatchai remarked that the government’s work has not been to merely lift a yellow card from the EU on Thailand’s fisheries but to ensure sustainability of the Kingdom’s maritime resources and to secure international acceptance. He noted work on fisheries will also help Thailand in terms of its Trafficking in Persons report standing.
