Someone left two kittens, maybe about four weeks old at the gate leading up to our house, my wifes daughter found them howling, probably starving.

She looked after them, fed them, and now they seem happy. I love cats and am happy to keep them, we already have an eight year old cat and two dogs.

What if word gets around the village and people start leaving their unwanted kittens, or even puppies, at our gate?

What would you do if someone left kittens at your gate and you couldn't take them? As you will know there is a big responsibility involved in keeping cats or other animals.

Yes be careful i have 3 dogs, about 8 tortoises,  numerous squirrels, all which i did not ask for but people have brought because they know we will take care of them.

Squirrels, You mean wild squirrels, why would anyone want to leave them at your gate? If I saw a baby wild squirrel, I would just take it out of any danger

and leave it, I'm sure it's parents would be around.

It does't bear thinking about.

You were v lucky that you were happy to keep them - and kudos that you and your stepdaughter were so caring towards these abandoned kittens.

My landlord brings in people (plus monkey) to knock down the coconuts from the palm trees in the surrounding land, and a few years ago they knocked down a dove nest with babies - and for some reason brought the 2 babies to me to look after.....  I'd never even spoken to them, and yet they somehow knew/assumed (quite correctly ) I was a soft touch when it comes to animals.

To look on the bright side, it was the one and only time - plus one survived (the other braver/more trusting dove was killed by my dogs after release ).

Having said this, I agree that it could quickly become a serious problem if word spreads that you adopt abandoned dogs and cats .

I have a cat that moved in on me a couple of years ago. It had 2 kittens and another later.

They do nothing, don't want to come near me yet they are quick enough to yowl when they want feeding.

If I could find somebody who wanted them they can have them for free, if they can catch them.

They are outside cats and are NOT allowed in the house or kitchen at all.

Cats all have different natures Bill, some are as you say only interested in you when they want fed, some will sit on your lap, others won't.

A few months ago when I was exercising on a machine in the local park, this beautiful cat came up to me, I petted it, it let me pick it up and give it a cuddle, then another

cat joined us, a couple of days later, I saw these same two cats at a nearby house, I stopped and petted them and then made friends with the house holder.

When I cycle past the house, I sometimes see these cats and always stop to pet them. Cats are beautiful creatures, some will make friends with you, and some won't.

I hope these two kittens who were left at my gate are affectionate towards me, only time will tell.

I'v read most of the replies....mostly giving accounts of same happening to them.

Nobody actually answering the question posed by the OP.

What would you do if you didn't want them?

    Answers might be interesting.

The only decent thing to do IMOi s to care for them in the interim while trying to find another home for them. Little kittens like this will not survive abandoned.

My younger cat came to me as a distressed inured kitten, I felt I could to possibly keep him (already had 2 pets, including one VERY jealous cat, and travel a lot) and tried to find him a home but due to his injury and long series of medical treatments needed, did not succeed so even though I felt I could not manage it, I ended up keeping him, found ways to manage  and he is now a treasured part of my life that I would not part with for anything.

Do what a friend of mine used to do when his farang wife had a very fertile female cat.

Put the kittens in a bag and  hit them on the head with a hammer or similar, as he already had 6 cats from previous matings and he could not find homes for any more.

I like having a few lizards, birds and wildlife around me. I don't mind cats, but they do decimate the wildlife so I chase them off. I guess if someone left kittens at our driveway I would just leave them there. If someone brought them in, I guess I would have to humanely dispose of them. Luckily we have a Pet Semetary at the back of our property for disposal purposes.

I know in BKK there's an animal shelter somewhere (maybe more than one), is there one where you are?

No, I'm up in the sticks.

I caught a rat in a trap that had ripped the seats on my two motorbikes, I could not even kill it. I took it away and set it free in the country, and you think I could

kill kittens with a hammer.

I guess you don't have any neighbors whose kids might want a kitten?  Apart from that I really don't know but I would definitely not have the stomach to do what marquiss22 suggested above.

The locals  brought snakes, a monitor lizard, a mongoose to my house because they knew my wife would give them money for them. She used to take them up the mountain and release the. A way of making merit I suppose. At least they lived to tell the tale and not get eaten.

We are going to keep these two, but I was worried about people in the village maybe leaving unwanted kittens and puppies at our gate

if other villagers think we will just automatically take them.

I've been adopted by a cockerel, he's juvenile and moved into the back garden, he had no feathers and was obviously way down the pecking order, that was three months ago,he now has all his feathers but wont move out,he looks after himself with what he catches in the garden. The dog chases him around the garden for fun now and again but the cat ignores him.

adopt them and socialize them and  in 2 months get vaccinations.  6 months sterilize.  cheap compared to the States.

That might work if you can find a vet that will sterilise them. Unfortunately out in rural Thailand there are very few small animal vets.

Plus with my cats I would have to catch them first.

You could try putting a sign up on your gate/fence in Thai, politely asking people not to leave their unwanted animals at your property.

Not sure it would work though, as the Thai mentality appears to be out of sight, out of mind.

Possibly let one of your family members tell a neighbour how unhappy you were that this happened, and that you want to contact the person responsible.

This will spread on the local grapevine like wildfire, and might desist others from doing the same.

Well cut the tom and snip the females then.

They are both females, so they will be operated on the same as the female cat and two female dogs I already have.

Of course not.

And anyone who could do much less advocate such a thing does nto belong in the pet forum.

even keeping them outside and just putting out food for them until they've grown enough to fend for themselves would be better than that.

BTW there is a belief in SEAsia that harming a cat is major, major bad karma.
