Jonathan Fairfield
Bangkok traffic police: Nearly 8,000 motorcyclists caught on footpath or going the wrong way in the last two months The Bangkok traffic police have announced the results of their "get tough policy" to reduce accidents in the capital caused by motorcyclists riding illegally. Top cop Jiraphat Phoomjit said that all 88 stations under the control of the met force are taking part and the figures for May and June show that 4,161 riders were caught on the footpaths and 3,743 were going the wrong way on main roads. Daily News said that two areas targeted in particular were Sukhumvit Road and Viphawadee Rangsit. Jiraphat said that in the first few days of the crackdown - that is ongoing - riders were only warned but after that they have been fined anything from 400 to 1,000 baht. But no figures were given in the story as to how much revenue this crackdown had generated. Jiraphat also said that local forces in outlying areas such as Regions 2,3 and 9 had been working with 191 special forces to stop illegal road racing by motorcyclists. Those caught had to undergo training so they would not repeat the offence, he said. Again, no figures were given to back up these claims. -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2017-06-
SiamBeast
But no figures were given in the story as to how much revenue this crackdown had generated. You mean, bribes? Attack the problem, not the consequence. The problem is a too high number of cars on the roads, forcing motorcycles to use the footpaths.
kkerry
8,000... if they really intended to get tough they would have no trouble whatsoever making that 800,000... Edited June 29, 2017 by kkerry

observer90210
Wheather the "fine" was officially cashed or went into the "tea money" account, the trafic offenders violating rules needed to shell out money. But let's be a sport and say that the dissuasive factor was partially attained!!... However, making the common man shell out 100THB may be small money even for some Thai's...the fines need to be more dissuasive and for those who recidivate or do something really dangerous - impound their vehicles.....but one can helas just dream for the laws being properly applied to dissuade the rash who violate the laws, should they be the Thai's or farangs.. Sounds fair to me 100 is usually...usually the amount accepted by our friends in brown outfits, should one pay through the more informal channels of "tea money", my friend!...that is if you are riding on a cheap looking bike and have left your Lamborghini back at home in the garage of the pool villa......but then consider inflation and costs of living, that may require a different amount of safe conduct passage, depending on the area... Maybe they need too put a limit on how many cars are allowed to drive on the road att the same time, or what do you think? What bribes? They were talking about fines! Thechook
No argument from me, totally believable our son was knocked down on a footpath by a woman on a motorbike who looked back at him and just kept going as if it's normal to run over people. Luckily just a small graze on his palm.

Siam Beast comment was made without much thought, as there are 2 sides to every story. He quotes no statistic and provides no basis for the generalised comment.... Fact is thst the toads maybe not big enough for the volume of traffic the citizens impose on them.... but seems to me there is always sufficient room for another motorcycle to squeeze through!! whatawonderfulday
So for a 300 baht fine each one that means the state sponsored Thai mafia, sorry the RTP, have extorted around 2,400,000 baht here alone. Now it is a pity that a real system of punishment is not found for these idiots riding on a footpath. Problem is the RTP would likewise have to follow the rule of law and as we all now, anything connected to Thai governments, or their supporters, are above the rule of law. petedk
Go to Thong Lor opposite Cammilian Hospital and at any one time you will see 8 - 10 motorbikes driving on the wrong side of the road and on the footpath. The police put a rope along the center of the road to stop right turns into Soi Jam Chan. So now motorbikes cross over the road a good 100 metres before the turning. How long will it be before there is an accident there?

Traffic is not forcing these morons and halfwits on to the footpath, they can slow down and stay on the road. Just because they are on two wheels does not give them the right to go from A to B quicker than the other traffic.

Driving to wrong way is common here Driving through red lights very common Look they can fine them 100 Baht but it will have no effect when they decide to take the joke part away from the offences committed then they might get some reaction from the bike riders right now it just a big joke and they will continue to drive up the wrong way
