PHICHIT, 5 July 2017 (NNT) – Phichit province’s public health office has put out a warning to pregnant women after discovering a Zika Virus infection but indicated the appearance was expected for the rainy season.

Ministry of Public Health inspector for Phichit Dr Opas Karnkawinpong reported to the discovery of 11 Zika infections in the province with 18 more individuals being monitored for the illness and another 12 pregnant women being closely watched.

He pointed out however that another 27 reported cases of infection have yet to be confirmed, noting that all the discoveries so far were in the same area. He sought understanding that the Zika Virus is transmitted by mosquitoes in the same way as Dengue Fever and is actually less severe than the now common seasonal illness with concerning impact only on pregnant women. He said it is likely that Zika will now be a seasonal sickness that occurs during the rainy season, when mosquitoes are more prevalent.

Nonetheless, Phichit Governor Weerasak Vijitsaengsri has ordered all relevant agencies work with the provincial health office to implement precautionary measures that include eradication of mosquitoes.

    • Several countries that have experienced Zika outbreaks recently have reported increases in people who have Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).
    • Current CDC research suggests that GBS is strongly associated with Zika; however, only a small proportion of people with recent Zika virus infection get GBS.

During the weeks of Zika virus transmission, there were significant increases in the incidence of the Guillain–Barré syndrome, as compared with the pre-Zika virus baseline incidence, in (Brazil’s) Bahia State (an increase of 172 percent), Colombia (211 percent), the Dominican Republic (150 percent), El Salvador (100 percent), Honduras (144 percent), Suriname (400 percent), and Venezuela (877 percent),” they wrote. “When the incidence of Zika virus disease increased, so did the incidence of the Guillain–Barré syndrome.

Excellent statement . TAT should latch onto this and promote Phichit . Come to Phichit in the rainy season to experience Zika.  A catch phrase could be "Catch it if you can"

So its not a real problem then... Give this clown an inactive post in a mosquito infested jungle.

While other countries use great energy to try to eradicate this virus, Thailand fobs it off a seasonal thing....we can't help it!

Rotten managers and inept staff everywhere here!
