except the best things in life cannot be bought by money

Try living without any for some time or go tell that to the hungry in Africa. Money may not give total happiness but we all need a minimum to keep head above water. Tell us what 'best things' cannot be bought with money?

art?  health?  sex?  travel?  fine wine?  even those wonderful things like nature?  you have to travel to see nature and the worlds wonders. When you get as old as I you will appreciate that health care comes at a price.

I worked hard to retire early from a highly stressful and successful career. I am divorced and chose to live in Thailand and travel, mostly, in Asia because of the weather, economic reasons etc. I also enjoy the company of women and delighted to enjoy the 'exchange'. Don't tell me 'yours is different'? but... wait... you don't live here right? I enjoy studying still (it gets in the blood) and have an extensive library (mostly Krishnamurti, Tagore, Blavatsky interwoven with a sprinkling of Buddhist texts). Judge not lest Ye be Judged we are not all bar-stool drop-outs.

BTW Thailand is not a 'third world country'

No, I am definitely not an intellectual.

To many Thailand is a third world country that is a nightmare to live in. So is Philippines. Why so many Filipino women want to leave? They even come to Thailand, no? So, once they arrive here do they stop existing on their 20,000 baht a month teacher salary? Probably.... at least that's what they must tell all their Filipino friends back home.

Thailand is definitely a place where a lot of people would not even consider moving, no matter how cheaper it is. BTW, don't you find it a tad embarrassing that you say you moved to Thailand for economic reasons, but judge other posters for "existing" because they don't meet a certain criteria of yours? You are in a third world country dude.... you can't really dance around this very fact. Some arrogant wanna be hiso farangs here brags about only staying at places like Conrad. Really? In a third world country the price of Conrad is cheaper than Super 8 motel ROFL.

Man.... I had it with judgmental "hiso" farang who are probably broke anyway.

My friend Thailand is NOT classified as 'Third World' please stop using that term. I do not judge anyone 'Live and Let Live'. I worked hard so I could retire early and enjoy the fruits and avoid, hopefully, that early heart-attack. But you don't live here right?  why are you commenting in a Thailand forum?

whats your definition of "best"

um....love? happiness? being content with what you have? It wouldn't surprise me though if some members of this site were to say that money can buy them "love" from a thai girl...

Yes Sir I get that. However age will come to you soon enough so I'd hold that arrogance back a bit if I were you. You will be there one day as sure as eggs is eggs.

I am officially 66.

But way back in the sixties I looked at the old farts and made the decision never to grow up.

Mabe I am as young as you?

Money doesn not matter? >> Age does not matter?

Then no doubt you enjoy living here as most of us do despite the fact that it is a draconian society.

Thailand is in transition, somewhere between third world and civilization.

And obviously, some traditions / people / infrastructure / ... changes faster than others.

If you want to see real third world, make a 3 hours trip to Kathmandu. Walk around the slums near the airport.

(but funny thing: everybody there speaks English....)

age does not matter, as long as it doesn't try to stick it in some young girl who could be it's granddaughter. And age does not magtter, as long as they mind their own business and get out of mine. If I say I'm happy with 20k baht, then leave it. Not everyone gets wiser with age, it seems.... Some of you get embittered with age. Some of you age like apples instead of fine wine... You rot with age...

I agree, but your "some of you" expression disturbs me.

Maybe just the phrazing?

It is not old against young - it never was, particularly the "generation conflict" in the sixties was not young against old. It was right against wrong.

I'm not more arrogant than those old farts claiming I'm only existing and can't possibly be living on my 20,000 baht spending per month (I have more than that available for use, I just use only 20,000 a month).

I am not one of them so exert your young angst elsewhere. Enjoy life as I have and DO.

My "some of you" refers to the older users on this site.

And I'm all in for right against wrong. But in this case, there is no right against wrong. I'm not wrong if I say I can LIVE on 20k a month. And if some nasty old fart keeps implying that I'm not living but only existing with that money, acting all "hiso" and holier-than-thou, then I can't just be quiet and let him think he's better than me.

There's research done on the relationship between income and life satisfaction and IIRC, it starts to level off around 80,000 USD per year in the US.  Being poor is clearly linked with lower life staisfaction, for obvious reasons.  Not just less fun stuff in life, but also more stress and having no choice but to put up with crap.

I grew up in a household with constant money problems and for me and my sister that was a huge driver to NOT become like that in adulthood.  I was just getting by on a scholarship till I was 32 (full scholarship with no other source of money first for an MBA and later a PhD), and sure I was happy then.  My late twenties (1990s) I was surviving on 15,000 dollars a year in Manhattan.  It was a penniless student lifestyle and it was OK then, because I knew it was temporary and being at a university campus with pretty undergrads everywhere.  Damn glad it's over though, and having more money does make life more enjoyable, up to a point.  For instance I'm getting tired of my job here and living in Bangkok, and now there's no stress, I can pack up when I reach that point where the bad outweighs the good.  Having some cushion helps a lot.

Don't get too literal also in reading people's posts.  No one's telling you what to do, or cares how you decide to live your life.

I related the things that happened in my life and that are relevant to this thread.  It's out of my control how you perceive that.  My point is "been there (at your age), done that".

again, I never said you attacked me. I was doing exactly what you said you were and it's out of my control how you perceive that. Don't blame me if you feel insulted by what I said. Maybe it's just your perception

I know its a public holiday tomorrow, but you seem to have hit the ya dong especially early....

Your response to CD's post 182 is extremely strange. For someone who is happy with their lot, you aren't half riled easily when money is brought up.

It's not the mention of money that riled me up, It's the arrogance. I can't stand arrogant people who thinks they can buy everything with money.
