Muang Maha Sarakham police demonstrate how to use sticks to subdue a suspect on Tuesday.

MAHA SARAKHAM: -- A video of Maha Sarakham police using Y-shaped and hooked sticks to subdue a frantic drunken man, which went viral on Monday, was part of a wider strategy, it was revealed.

It is part of Provincial Police Region 4 training to reduce injuries to suspects and arresting police when attempting to subdue knife-wielding or agitated people, said Muang Maha Sarakham precinct superintendent Colonel Chairoj Nakharaj.

He said that once a week since last year, each precinct under Provincial Police Region 4 has had a team of four officers trained in how to use three Y-shaped and one hook-shaped stick to subdue suspects.

The hook stick is used to pull a suspect off their feet and the Y-shaped sticks are used to hold them down.

Chairoj said the method is used only when deemed appropriate.

The incident in the video, which went viral after its was posted on the precinct's Facebook page, took place on Saturday after police were alerted to a drunken man wielding an object that looked like a long knife wrapped in a cloth at the Maha Sarakham Bus Station.

He was arrested for creating a public disturbance.

This stick comes with an optional extra. That being a small basket on the end where the suspect can deposit donation money at no risk to the police.

So what they gonna do?

Maybe say to the suspect, hang in there for 10 minutes while the fancy shaped sticks are brought from the police station.:cheesy:

Totally impractical for police to carry them around.

Yeah they'll never fit in those pickups, oh wait, they did.

Anyone heard of tasers?

They used to be on sale alongside other formidable weaponry and martial arts stuff at footpath stalls on Sukhumvit between Soi 5 and wherever. Don't know whether they still are.

Yes i was mocking the police for coming up with another stupid idea.

Remember last years joke??????

I do, outside the Banphai railway station, the clowns were using a net to catch suspects with knives.

That crazy idea died a death just the sam e is this nonsensical idea once they find it is not a practical idea.

Taser anyone.

You mean teenagers that spray people's faces with sulphuric acid? Or the ones that drive 60 miles an hour in suburbs where little children play in the street?

Ik could really not care less about whether they live or die. Police are just trying to do their job to protect the general public.

Might take longer than ten minutes, if one or two of the four man team is off duty ???

This is pure fantasy!   The vast majority of UK police are armed only with a truncheon.
