Chamlong Srimuang

BANGKOK: -- SIX FORMER leaders of the now-defunct People’s Alliance for Democracy were temporarily released on bail after the Appeals Court ruled on Monday to uphold the Court of First Instance’s sentences on charges of invading Government House in 2008 during protests against the government.

The court, however, reduced the penalty given to them from jail terms of two years to eight months, citing that they did not act in their own interests or any individual’s interests.

The six former leaders are retired general Chamlong Srimuang, Somsak Kosaisuk, Pipob Thongchai, Suriyasai Katasila, Somkiat Pongpaiboon and media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul, who is serving a jail term in a separate case involving stock market violations.

According to court testimony, the six led protests against the Samak Sundaravej government to put pressure on the then-premier to resign.

They took over Government House and were charged with invading a state property and causing damage.

The first court had sentenced them to three years in jail before reducing the penalty to two years. Their lawyer, Suwat Apaipak said he had posted bail of Bt200,000 each for five of them, and submitted a land deed for Somkiat. Suwat said he has also appealed to the Supreme Court.

Last week, the group, along with three other ex-leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, faced sedition charges for their scattered protests targeting several government compounds in 2008.

However, the first court dismissed that charge against the six ex-leaders and suspended sentence for the three other ex-leaders for two years.

Isn't that exactly what Suthep did but he has never been touched

Unforunately it takes a decade-or-so, to reach this point, which is why the PAD & Jatupon are currently in-the-news, hopefully Suthep's time will come too.

Thai justice makes the mills-of-God look like a high-speed production-facility ! :wink::smile:

backed by evidence?

made up as the case progressed?

agreed to in advance?

because they said so?

lets hope suthep is put away for a long time when his turn comes, problem is with thai courts it takes years for these cases to come before the courts so they walk around for years while on bail even though some constantly breach bail conditions, justice here isnt blind, its bought

Suthep was a brave man and did what was needed. He is still very popular amongst Thais. So your views about him are just your personal ones. I for one, have much admiration for him.

With the backing he had, nothing brave about him at all.

You could call saedang brave when he went against his own army to stand up for what he believed in.

He was shot in the head giving an interview.

I live in the south, sutheps region and all the locals dislike him and his family for really good reasons, when you see what they do first hand you get to realize exactly what they are like and how corrupt they are. Suggest you look at his background rather than what happened in Bangkok, that was a shining light for him, outside that he is just as bad as many others if not worse

Well you know the prisons are over populated, and they expect a high profile prisoner by the end of August, so better clean up the joint.

I expect he has support in the South. That is where most of his thugs came from at the time of street confrontation. He is however loathed in the rest of the country for his duplicity and feral behavior, not to mention his known corruption. To be fair he was not an independent agent, effectively under instructions from military and feudal overlords. He coordinated his seditious acts with an approving military.

Your high opinion of him is contemptible and shameful though your own concern. But you cannot speak for the Thai people.

They got first 3 years, then reduced to two years, then to 8 months. I guess after the next appeal it will be zero years....

And got bail. Shambolic display of double standard by the courts once again.
