Legalizing Thailand's Sex Industry Unfathomable

This country cracks me up.

 

While prostitution is and always has been against the law, until recently there has been little prosecution of it. The PM has decided to declare war on it and has instructed the police and army to conduct raids.

 

Anyone who has been around here for any period of time knows this is all for show.

 

Completely take prostitution out of Thailand (although you never really will) and this shaky economy would completely crash.

 

Sex tourism is and always has been a cash cow for Thailand. Take the sex away and the guys will just go somewhere else and take their money with them.

 

The whole idea of ridding Thailand of it is a complete and utter joke.

 

Making it less blatant would be fine, but good luck with that as well. Are they going to completely shut down Patpong, Soi Cowboy, Walking Street and all of the other prostitution centers? How about the soapy massage parlors, some of which are well known to be owned by politicians?

 

There are much bigger issues in Thailand and it would be nice if the government would address those areas and leave the hookers alone.

Thailand so often criminalizes and persecutes the victims. Like people trafficked onto fishing boats, they cannot run away because the police will lock them in the slammer for some spurious reason like not having a work permit. Same with prostitutes. The girls provide a service which is very much in demand and contributes enormously to tourism...of course not all tourists are sex tourists but a considerable proportion heading Pattaya, Phuket and Nana in Bangkok?  What other reason would people wait in 4 hour queues at immigration, and put up with the rest of the crap that Thailand throws at them....is it for the filthy beaches, the dangerous and impassable sidewalks or the relentless hawkers of watches, suits, and other useless bric-a-brac?

As I explained earlier, most prostitutes do get left alone as they work within the current regulations.

1) The industry would move indoors, where the workers and the customers would be better protected from disease (with medical check ups), violence and rip offs, and monitor the workers so that no one underage is providing services.

3) The government would control the pricing and the services would be taxed, thus adding a new source of revenue for the nation.

OHHHHH....Forget about #s 1-3.  #4 is the reason that eliminating the sex industry is unfathomable.  

 

  

Are we expecting the Thais to think and behave like say, the Dutch or Swedish? So much money involve in this trade how are they going to do it. It means we get everybody together and have a open discussion? That's the Dutch way of thinking and behaviour and the Thais don't think or behave that way. So? It will remain for a long long time as it is I reckon.

you're not seeing this from the governments point of view. The Thai govt looks bad on the new report showing not enough was being done to stop human trafficking so this kicked off the raids.  As stated raids on clubs have been going on forever. When I first came here clubs got raided, looking for underage drinkers, drugs, girls working underage, etc.  Every time Thailand gets any bad publicity the govt has a knee jerk reaction. I agree I dont see Thailand legalizing prostitution.

Should this be for prostitution for Thailand or hardcore drugs in western nations , the patterns of the game, the money, the corruption and the political interests involved, are the same.

According to T A T prostitution don't live here and saying different is rocking the boat of peace and reconciliation as Chairman P reminds us in his broadcasts .. And even if there was prostitution here the Thai's would sort it out in their own good time and way .. I'm sure .. Anyway it will all become fairly academic when Lady-bots and cyber-sexers start flooding the market ( especially once the Chinese have grabbed a few to copy ) as others on this forum have alluded to .. I do not think being a destination for Sex tourism is good for Thailand. Of course prostitution cannot be rooted out, but a wise Nation follows a path of harm reduction.

 

First the major foreign oriented fleshpots, Cowboy , Nana, Walking Street Pattaya, Patpong should be shuttered or re-tasked as shopping areas. That does not stop prostitution either.Whoremongers will pick up a girl (or ladyboy or gay) at McDonalds, a booksellers, behind the makeup counter at Robinson, on the street. etc.

 

What is needed is targeted raids and arrests of foreigners cavorting with Thai sex workers. The courts then hand out the typical long custodial sentences and crazy fines. Make a few examples to rot in gaol 20 years.

 

Thailand will then be known internationally as a place where the so-called "sex tourist" risks life ruining fines and long stays in Thai jail. Sex pests will travel elsewhere and the problems they feed eliminated.

What would they charge them with? Neither cavorting with or having sex with prostitutes is against Thai law!

This thread is about fully legalising prostitution (things like soliciting and brothels) and 90% of this is for local consumption or in border areas on the Thai/Malaysia border, not the tourist/expat bar scene which is limited to a few areas of Bangkok and some coastal resorts like Pattaya and Patong.

I was amused to learn a couple of days ago that the well-known free thinker and anti-censorship activist Abhsit Veiijajiva had been at the forefront of defending the Thai government's banning of Longman dictionary way back in 1993 because it associated Bangkok with prostitution
