The Department of Special Investigation has already required five of its officials and security guards to submit to lie detector tests in connection with the controversial death of a suspect in custody last year and passed the results to the court.

“It’s up to the court to decide whether to take the lie-detector results into account,” Pol Colonel Paisit Wongmuang, director-general of the DSI, said yesterday.

Tawatchai Anukul, a prime suspect in the alleged illegal issuance of land-rights documents for seaside plots worth at least Bt900 million, was found hanging inside a DSI cell on August 30, 2016.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The Criminal Court ruled last Friday that he was put to death.

Police are now looking for the real perpetrators.

The Justice Ministry has conducted a probe into Tawatchai’s death with doctors from four hospitals on the fact-finding committee.

“We can explain his death,” Paisit said.

The Justice Ministry’s committee had doubts about the autopsy finding that Tawatchai had a ruptured liver.

“The volume of blood in his abdominal cavity was about 1000cc, while bleeding from a ruptured liver should leave more than 3,000cc of blood there,” he said.

There was no sign of fighting inside Tawatchai’s cell at DSI headquarters, he added.

results will be interesting as long as they are genuine and not doctored to suit the required results

If the Thai courts start regularly using lie detector tests, they had better start the construction of a few more jails.

Thai lie detectors have a secret switch which the operator can flick to "truth" or "lies". Depending on the outcome they wish to achieve.

Now if they genuinely introduced reliable technology to actually determine the absolute truth, when asked if they had ever taken a bribe, or been involved in activity that was profitable, but outside the law, I wonder who the hell in the BIB that passed the test, would be left to collect the brown envelopes every month? Especially since if they were telling the truth, they probably shouldn't know when and where to pick them up anyway!

Of course the test would depend on the questions.

Do you work at dsi?yes

Were you at work on the night of? Yes

Do you know of tawatchai? Yes

Did you see tawatchai? Yes

Did you hit tawatchai no.

Result. ....passed.

??because I was ordered to strangle him ???

To the BIB, whatever they do is deemed appropriate, because they did it.

No one will ever fail, because they'll smile real big as they are lying.

Worrying. Are the committee saying they are better informed on medical matters than those carrying out the autopsies?

Might be relevant to a few other recent cases if correct.

it seems to lie is the baseline norm thus the vast majority tested would pass with the rare truthful ones producing the aberrant results which could be interpreted as the guilty ones
