I got the news today that my child has been selected (after several tests) to go study 1 year abroad.

The 2 possibilities are:
1. The USA - 500,000 Baht.
2. Canada   - 300,000 Baht.

More details will ge given at a later time by the school after a meeting with the school Headmasters.

The bad news is that I can't afford to pay these amounts.
On top of that sum, I will need to send to my child every month a sum of money for her own expenses.
In the USA.

This would be not be cheap.

What are my options to this?
I would like my child to take this opportunity to study 1 year in the USA.

I already send an email to family members to ask if they would "sponsor" my child and I am sure they will be donating some money.
I also send a few letters to Official instances in my home country, but as my child is not a refugee, I don't expect much from them.

What can I do more?
Setup a "Founds Rising" advertising like other people do here after having an accident and no Insurance?

TIA

of course   you and many others may consider this as an opportunity  not to be missed or taken without considerable thought  the bottom line is  as you have stated   you do not have the necessary funding    do not expect others to shell out for your   wishes  and dreams

I wouldn't suggest setting up a 'fundraising' type scheme. I assume that is what you last sentence meant. You are not so poor your kid cant receive any education (may be justified there), you just want your kid to live an 'experience' in another country. Doesn't even seem like you are doing it so the kid can get a better standard of education (as it is only for one year).

Not only that, you said you want your kid to go to the U.S, when Canada is far cheaper by your figures.

Can't afford it, tough luck! Only the lowest of low people in society use fundraising situations for personal gain. Those sorts of things should be restricted to people who are indeed, in NEED!

Throw the initial sum on a credit card then deal with the month to month....

Even in the US these special offers/societies come up often....Happened a few times with my grandchildren who lived many states away and have seen a handful of times - and who did they come looking for to pay the cost = me....

I told them I'd pay half if they wanted to raise the rest - work extra to provide for their own child - car washes - bake sales - mow lawns - whatever...The answer I got back to raising/using some of their own money was "that isn't happening"......

There are companies that do this grouping of students for one year study abroad - that's the hook.....Then there's quite often side trips offered the other countries (in my case they would be going on trips around the EU), historical landmarks, museums, competitions, you name it.....

This is where and how the companies make their money - and of course every parent would feel obligated to give their child the full experience.....

Probably a good thing for the kids, right up until the time they qualify as "special selected scholars" to continue studying abroad after the first year is completed....

Face it, the school year is maybe 9 months....I put my US youngest daughter through private school 30+ years ago & she received a brilliant education - qualified for university level studies by age 12.....But at that time the cost was close to $1500.00 per month US....SO, you're not getting much offered at $15,000.00.....

I think the is a for profit company behind your offer.....Better start researching & take a hard look at everything about the program....

Chances are the people that have been approached are all caught up in the spotlight of the "glamour" of it......A lot of these things are "packaged "opportunities.....Not scams per say, but......

You might want to look into an exchange student program possibility or some other options, agencies, scholarships, programs, possibilities for your child.....

I know the pitfalls and the scams that are going around everywhere.
I don't enrol my child in any of these programs if I have doubts about this "Studying abroad for 1 year".

I know that Thailand send every year a few students to learn abroad.

But this is not from the school.
I know a girl who is studying in Germany (University) and all the tuition fees and housing fees are payed by the Thai Government.
Drawback of this system is that when she finish her studies, she will need to work in Thailand for 5 years in a Public place (Public hospital; Court house; Police/Foreign Police; etc.).

I just want to be prepared if it is a genuine plan to study abroad.

Actually, 5 years is a great trade off for that education.....

Considering many in the West are quagmired in their mid 40's trying to pay down a college loan while not getting what they thought they would out of life....

I received today a map with documentation about the project.
All the information can also be read at www.iStudyth.com.

Next Saturday will be organised a meeting between the parents and the organisators.

I suspect that the expenses will be half that again with no real gain in the long run. Unless you have very generous relatives this will be a no go.

I know in my heart i will be taking my son back to my homeland to be educated so that his qualifications will be worth something around the world.

Any money spent in Thailand will be wasted

As much as i feel for your plight you should of thought about this a long time ago

I take it you have nothing to go back to now and would be very surprised if you could get people to finance your child's education.

Seems expensive and I think your better off saving the cash for a time when the child may need it than breaking your back for a 1 year programme.

Surely your child already benefits from a multilingual household aleady and this intensive 1 year experience will normally provide kids with a better grasp of English more than anything else?
