Recall the times you've been told YOU'RE FIRED, if any
BritManToo replied to Jingthing's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Same company made me redundant twice. First time they lost a contract, no need for me, then promoted into a different job. Second time they changed conditions of service, I chose redundancy, gave me 1 years wages tax free. As I was in the office with HR, the guy said "why did you choose to leave", my reply was "Do you know how long it would take me to save a years' wages free and clear?, and I can start a new job tomorrow". He said, "Yeah, I would have left too" All very friendly, kept my ID, everyone wanted to see the cheque. Last real job I ever had, retired age 45. -

Retiring to Thailand UK resident
BritManToo replied to Kevin1908's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
Don't tell anyone you've left unless you want a world of hurt. Keep a UK address for your bank, pension, IFA, Doctor, NHS ....... they don't need to know where you are. Life certificates are only for those who have foolishly declared they are living outside the UK. It's also useful to keep a UK phone number, Skype can provide this for $22/quarter, and you can select your town of residence for caller ID. Phoning UK numbers is $10 extra for 400 minutes credit. PS. If you declare you live outside the UK, you are no longer entitled to have a UK driving licence. How useful is that? -
Bangkok Bank no New Accounts
BritManToo replied to tuktuktuk's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
It's just that branch of that bank that didn't want your business. Or as someone already said, that teller didn't want to deal with a foreigner. Try a different branch of the same bank and you'll get a different answer. -
Solar panel advice & experiences

Allegedly operating Voltage is the number to look for if connecting in parallel. And operating Current is the number to look for if connection in series. Apparently ALL in the string will work at the lesser value. @Crossy has mixed a few together. -

Managed to find 2 XINJING 330W solar panels on shopee for 6,200bht delivered. Not so bad and match 3 of my existing panels. I'm gonna try 330W x 5 on my 1000W GTI, the existing 330W x 3 never beat 500W so hopefully no bang. -
Looks to me like the world's governments want international tourism to fail. I ain't the one randomly opening and closing borders. If it were up to me the borders would be open, and tough luck for the weak, old and sick. I certainly won't be getting on a plane, with the risk of incarceration at the destination.

Solar panel advice & experiences

You'll be lucky to get that much back, 5-6 units a day max = around 8,000bht year ROI. (Unless your 1660W of panels produces a lot more than my 1670W of panels) = Payback in 4 years. If you want to reduce your payback time, add another 2 panels to your system. 2021 I generated 1,939 units @4.2bht/unit = 8143bht -
Solar panel advice & experiences

I'm not daft enough to buy them. I just read the customer reviews, and think NO. Selling obviously swollen batteries is just foolish, buying from someone who already got bad reviews is madness. -

I'd get some batteries, but all the folk selling them on Lazada get bad reviews ...... he sent me 'fat' batteries. -

DIY Basic GTI + panels is cheap as chips (20kbht with 5x340W panels), ROI 500-600bht/month. Payback time 40 months. But the next step up is a really big one. Batteries and a on/off grid hybrid (100kbht with 10x 340W panels and 10KWHr storage), ROI 1000-1200bht/month. Payback time 100 months. Obviously double my estimates if you get someone else to install it. Most people make the mistake of not thinking why they want solar. If it's just to save money, GTIs is the way to go. If you're prepping for TEOTWAWKI, then you'll need batteries. If it's because your gf's land is somewhere 'inaccessible', then it's probably cheaper to buy some new land nearer civilisation. -
Storing electricity is expensive, most of us use the grid as our battery (winding the meter backwards in the day). But if you don't have the grid, you need to buy batteries to store your electricity for the night. To store 10 units of electricity, a battery would cost 50,000-70,000bht. Another 20,000bht for the off grid hybrid inverter. Add 30,000-50,000bht for 15x solar panels.

I have 5 panels and 2 GTIs, they provide about 140 units a month but need the PEA electricity to work. Cost around 20,000bht. If I was off grid I'd need to spend more like 100,000bht, batteries are expensive. If you have to hire someone to install it for you, double the price.

I never did anything like that when I was a tourist. And also the rules change so quickly, what you read the week before, is different when you arrive. Presumably the western insurance companies will get tired of being gouged and just refuse to cover Thailand, along with the airlines refusing to fly here.

How about a solar car port on a budget?
BritManToo replied to Crossy's topic in Alternative/Renewable Energy Forum
My 5 panels produced 141 units, and I bought another 172 in December. I'd buy another 2 panels if the price hadn't gone up so much.
