Turning 50 next year, what to do about visa
That is incorrect. Some immigration office insist on proof funds came from pension. Some immigration offices do not. Regarding pension at any age it could be a disability pension etc. The OP has disclosed little.

Turning 50 next year, what to do about visa
Let's get the discussion away from the old chestnut "visa agents" The OP stated that he is considering that. Up to him what method to use. OP you stated earlier that you cannot show 65k per month. That's a concern. Also have not stated if you have a pension. Which country passport?

Turning 50 next year, what to do about visa
OP, at some stage answer questions I asked in earlier post. Then folk can advise correctly. There is no retirement visa. You will be obtaining a Non O based on retirement. This provides a 90 day stamp then you obtain subsequent extensions. You can obtain a Non O from a visa exempt or tourist visa entry. Read this thread and the links https://aseannow.com/topic/1311886-visa-exempt-to-retirement-extension-process-and-cost/ You mention EU. At a guess your embassy will provide "income letter"(not UK) and you could use income method. Non O cost 2000b 12 month extension cost 1900b

120+ day stay possible?
His thread has link above in my post

120+ day stay possible?
Perfect. @Pattaya57 posted above his border bounce recently and impressive tour company. He can direct you to that thread. Thinking having agent border run is best option. From memory 3700baht. Edit: @pinkbob found border bounce thread from Pattaya to Cambodia.
-
120+ day stay possible?
No. As soon as exit Thailand your current permission of stay ends. Yes leave it till almost expired. You don't even need to stay few days. You can reenter straight away. Where are you located in Thailand as that determines best border bounce. Also which passport
-
120+ day stay possible?
No. However you could do a border bounce and reenter visa exempt with option of 30 day extension

Seeking advice for new stay possible.
Thinking you have other options. For example you can fly direct from CM to places such as HCMC. The evisa for vietnam is simple process. $25usd. Spend few days there and fly back to CM for another 30 visa exempt entry. Thinking new rules visa exempt for Chinese nationals started March. Of course that 30 can be extended by 30. Maybe good option for mother.

Good news. Close this thread now. OP has a positive outcome.

Visa Agency Recommendations
Suggest you do it yourself. Current reports seem to indicate extensions not as busy as few months ago. The multiple reentry permit can be obtained at airport on day of departure.

Washed UK Passport
Out of interest did your immigration office require you to provide bankbook for proof of adhering to financial requirements. Ask as I did transfer of stamps to new pp few weeks back and CW required this.

Retirement visa VS tourist visa. Advantages?
Find this a nonsense. "Stayed in Thailand for many years..." implies ongoing living in Thailand. Try to be clear. Staying in Thailand does not mean eg 6 months in and 6 out using visa such as METV each year. Also "quite old to get a retirement visa" Is that a joke. What age do you suggest.

90 day rejected
Don't get your point. It certainly would not be an hour if you lived in Bangkok or elsewhere had very long drive to immigration office
-
Retirement visa VS tourist visa. Advantages?
The names of medications would be clearly stated on your billing statement. You opt to include that purchase or not. In any event you know what has been prescribed.
-
Retirement visa VS tourist visa. Advantages?
Yes yes ...however the OP has never referred to PE visa. A costly option at that.
-
Retirement visa VS tourist visa. Advantages?
Note: this thread is not about farang medical costs v medical costs for Thai. The OP was asking about any advantages for non O extensions VS tourist visas. Answer: No there is not.
-
Retirement visa VS tourist visa. Advantages?
It means you don't get any discount etc for medical or other. You are granted temporary permission of stay and will pay same as someone on visa exempt entry
-
Retirement visa VS tourist visa. Advantages?
Understand. I have been very lucky and had never needed a stay in a hospital in Thailand or AU. Not so long ago I had a hip replacement at private hospital in Bangkok. Was like a 5 star hotel. Hip replacement + all the add ons came to 20k aud. Currently in Oz. Have had all bloods etc ultra sound x rays you name it. Cost Zero
-
Retirement visa VS tourist visa. Advantages?
The benefit is with a reentry permit you can exit and reenter Thailand as often as you like. Be aware that an extension from non O provides a temporary permission of stay. Exactly the same as stamp from tourist visa. Living in Thailand ongoing on tourist visas is not an option
