If he is wanting to receive money via Western Union it's entirely possible that he needs the money to his overstay fee when he does eventually it to the airport. Going to the airport with no means to pay your overstay fee would be a very bad idea.

Or is it the case that you have, in fact, met people who claim to have degrees, however this is such an improbable achievement (in your eyes) that you have just chosen to not believe them?

One thing to bear in mind is that there's a change of government happening at the moment so feedback you get now may not be relevant in 6 months time. It's quite possible that the situation may change, either officially through legislation, or unofficially through ministers instructing consulates/immigration to be less uptight about issuing visas. Of course, it could also go the other way.

Well even if an METV is stricktly supposed to be for people who want to go travelling, I suppose it's reasonable to expect that once the time available for travelling within Thailand has expired, one might wish to go about elsewhere and then return to Thailand before finally flying home? Or maybe the person processing my application was just having a bad/good day ????????‍♂️.

When I applied for my METV I had a ticket that was returning 11 months later. The METV was granted. I don't even know why the OP is asking if Nov - March would be a problem; that's within the 6 month METV validity.

What was the battery level when it switched off? If the battery has completely drained, it can lead to the device not having enough power to even show the charging graphics on screen. When this happens, you need to leave the device plugged in for anywhere from 5 minutes to a couple of hours in order that the battery can charge up to a level where it can safely power the device, at which point the screen should come on with the usual charging indicator. This usually tends to only happen after a prolonged period of non-use, so it probably doesn't apply in your case, but it doesn't hurt to try in your case.

Another option would be to arrive visa exempt (by air) and do two border runs via land.
