Frozen pension policy turns British expat's dream into a nightmare
freeworld replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I would say it is pretty good. About 12000 GBP per annum plus generous freedom to make financial planning arrangements for old age throughout ones working life. Citizens of many countries get nothing. -

Retired at 55, moved to a foreign country without adequate financial planning. Blaming the govt, wonder if that is right. As with taxes govt like to meddle with the benefit (pension) age. -

Educated tolerant people know and should understand their beliefs. Educated people can think that drawing certain things is offensive to those practicing that faith. Its not hard at all to abide by their culture to not cause offence and that everyone can get along. -

Thai tourism sector proposes 300-baht tax to counter over-tourism
freeworld replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Every now and then this matter is brought up to rile up the foreigners. Surely some foreigners will see the benefit to help their fellow less fortunate compatriots as it was originally touted to cover the medical bills of those who did not pay for their treatment at the hospitals "Some of the tax money is allocated for overseas tourists who are unable to pay their healthcare bills while the rest will go towards the management of local tourist attractions." -

The following from PWC Thailand tax booklet for personal tax. "Penalties and surcharge A taxpayer who is assessed additional tax by an assessment officer on the grounds that an inaccurate return was filed, or who failed to file a return, is subject to a penalty. The rate of penalty is 100% for an inaccurate return and 200% for failure to file a return. Penalties may be reduced by 50% if the taxpayer submits a request in writing and the assessment officer is of the opinion that the taxpayer did not intend to evade tax and cooperated with the officer during the tax audit. Any person who fails to pay or remit tax within the specified time is liable to pay a surcharge of 1.5% per month, or fraction thereof, of the amount of tax to be paid or remitted subject to a maximum equal to the amount of tax to be paid or remitted. Tax investigation and assessment The Revenue Department is empowered to demand documents and records for inspection for a period of two years. The period will be extended to five years if it is found, or there is a reason to believe, that there was tax evasion, or where a tax audit is conducted for the purpose of paying a tax refund. Nevertheless, under the Civil and Commercial Code, the Revenue Department can assess tax for up to ten years." I think it is this section from the Civil and Commercial Code Section 448. Statute of Limitations The claim for damages arising from wrongful act is barred by prescription after one year from the day when the wrongful act and the person bound to make compensation became known to the injured person, or ten years from the day when the wrongful act was committed. However if the damages are claimed on account of an act punishable under the criminal law for which a longer prescription is provided such longer prescription shall apply. Prescription Section 193/31. Taxes 10 Years The period of prescription for claims of the Government for taxes and rates is ten years. As to other claims of the Government relating to obligations, the provisions of this title shall apply.

Thai revenue code section 19 Section 19 Unless stated otherwise, in the case where an assessment official has a reasonable cause to believe that any person has filed a false or incomplete tax return, the assessment official shall have the power to issue a summons call upon that tax return filer for interrogation and issue a summons call upon a witness and order that tax return filer or witness to show accounts, documents or any other evidence but he shall give at least 7 days in advance from the date of delivery of summons. Except there is evidence or reasonable doubt that a tax return filer has intention to evade tax or in the case necessary for the purpose of tax refund, a Director-General may extend the time for the issuance of such summons in excess of 2 years but not exceeding 5 years from the date of tax return filing. However, the extension of time limit for the purpose of tax refund shall not exceed the time limit for refund.

Thailand to block unlicensed Crypto Exchanges
freeworld replied to CharlieH's topic in Cryptocurrency News
This news from cointelegraph https://cointelegraph.com/news/thailand-blocks-unlicensed-crypto-exchanges-online-crimes "Thai authorities will block unlicensed crypto exchanges from operating in the country to prevent money laundering and other online crimes. Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will submit a list of unlicensed crypto exchanges to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society. The order was made public by Thai SEC Secretary-General Pornanong Budsaratragoon after the Technology Crime Prevention and Suppression Committee meeting on April 19. Thailand’s decision to block unlicensed firms was inspired by India and the Philippines, which recently banned all off-shore exchanges that failed to comply with local regulations. To minimize the impact on the public, the Thai SEC urged crypto investors to withdraw their funds from unregistered platforms before the ban takes effect." -
Not necessarily, most cable incidents are due to fishing and anchoring. "The International Cable Protection Committee, an NGO based in the U.K., said that an average of 150 incidents occur each year that damage undersea cables—and most of these are caused by activities such as commercial fishing and anchoring." For the cable that was broken on the 20th April (SEA-ME-WE 5 24Tbps) “There was a report of a temporary outage followed by the current long term outage is that the cable experienced a shunt fault where water penetrated the polyethylene insulation. The repeaters were able short term to compensate but the electrical short grew over time and the connection to the very important Tuas CLS in Singapore was completely lost”

On the 20th April 2024 in the night a major undersea telecom cable has been damaged between Malaysia and Singapore. This has disrupted network traffic in many Asian countries and telecoms with western Europe. One of the other newer cables was damaged in the Gulf region in early March 2024 it is assumed by the sinking of that Rubymar ship. So basically Thailand (and many other Asian countries) has lost 2 major communication cables with a loss of many Tbs with Western Europe, I guess communication traffic has been rerouted through other older undersea telecom cables systems.
