  1. Yeah, the cost of getting resettled in another country would be much worse than the Thai tax for me. That said, I really think Thailand should consider granting some kind ID to foreign tax resident taxpayers that would be required to be honored everywhere that double pricing is now the game. Not a driver's license. A specific care for that. On the other hand, I suppose that would need to be updated annually so perhaps not so practical.
  2. Thanks. Interesting. So is Fidelity now requiring SOME kind of two factor for all logins?
  3. As with everything, tax impacts are an individual matter. Clearly global taxation could be a live in Thailand deal killer for many expats, but personally (as long as social security income remains excluded) it wouldn't be so bad for me.
  4. How does getting voice verified work exactly with Fidelity? So you call in everytime? Does that involve talking to a human every time or is it an automatic system once you have set it up? I kind of like the idea of voice verification. I have the same issue -- no U.S. mobile to get texts. A question, when you log in to Fidelity from Thailand, do you log in from Thailand or use a U.S. VPN? Maybe that triggered the extra demand? Personally, I have a way to do a real U.S. login without VPN (a device set up for that purpose in the U.S.).
  5. Of course it's Trump and the entire maga fascist movement. Veddy Dark indeed.
  6. As far as remittances to Thailand, correct. As far as economic activity IN Thailand (working, business, rental income, etc.) it's irrelevant if you're a Thai tax resident -- you'd still be subject to Thai tax.
  7. Trump never appealed to me anyway.
  8. Carter's parting "gift" to the incoming demagogue elect. As indicated in the OP -- yes there is something "interesting" about the timing of Carter's death. About the Panama Canal, it really should be the Colombia Canal as American imperialists who I'm sure Trump would admire, separated Panama from them.
  9. A Trump fan calling Biden a narcissist. Hilarious.
  10. Carter will receive a state funeral (in D.C., Atlanta, and Plains) and lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda. The Carter family has invited President Biden to give a eulogy (at the National Cathedral). There will be a national day of mourning January 9. All government agencies and the stock market will be closed.
  11. Yeah for a while that was a progressive position to take, but without knowing the details it's hard to believe Carter maintained that support after learning about the Khmer Rouge atrocities. Heck, my mother sang at a school in America where The Internationale was sung daily back when supporting the Soviet communists was considered an idealistic humanistic position. I reckon many Trumpists are going to be similarly embarrassed later when they fully see what their fascist leader actually does with so much power.
  12. Carter was nothing like Wallace. Sure I know Wallace. I did a video project covering one of his campaign rallies.
  13. Rather harsh but I actually do recall as a liberal democrat when he won and took over D.C. with his grits revolution that he was considered quite right wing for a democrat. However, comparing him to Trump is a bridge too far in trashing him. Trump is in a LOW class of his own. Also to add, I'm not super familiar with Georgia politics back then, but it is the DEEP SOUTH, and I'm sure back then getting the "redneck" vote was a must do to have any chance to win.
  14. Be careful. He might claim Scotland as the 53rd state. (After adding Canada and Greenland.)
  15. Good point. It was a good time for retirees buying CDs, etc.
  16. As far as hotel booking, I'm pretty sure most of the major booking sites DO accept debit cards to pay and reserve without requirement of imprinted name. On top of that they automatically put a hold on a reserve in your account so that the hotel getting an imprint for incidentals becomes irrelevant. In other words, say you have 100K in your bank account. You pay 20K for a hotel booking with your debit card. An amount in ADDITION is locked up until some time after you check out and your bill is settled.
  17. Surprising. I guess even he knows there's nothing to gain from beating on 100 year old dead man who has through his good works become beloved.
  18. Not so sure about that but definitely less of a blow out for Reagan.
  19. Yes it was really bad which is why those of us who lived through that might feel that younger people's reaction to inflation under Biden lacks historical context. Not to mention how people in Argentina and Russia must feel. Carter levels would be great for them!
