Is 1 million baht enough to retire in Thailand?
pomchop replied to Celsius's topic in General Topics
14 years til pension? So assume age is about 48 or so if pension comes at age 62? how about go back to work somewhere and live frugally and save every penny you can stash away rather than try to retire at early age when you clearly don't have the $$? -
There was not much that was "normal" last weekend in Pattaya with the fire works...lots of busy weekends but last weekend was off the charts crowded....thank goodness it is not like that everyday.
-
Arriving in pattaya on friday night of one of the busiest weekends of the entire year with hundreds of thousands of people in town for the fireworks and OP has problems....imagine that.

Thai Property Reforms: A Boon or Burden for Foreign Buyers?
pomchop replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Yes and watch how fast China has 90 year leases on massive tracts of land...pay thais to grow rice then ship it all back to China. Lets also build some massive Chinese communties all over Thailand. They do realize there are about 1.5 BILLLION chinese basically next door who would change the entire country of Thailand very quickly.? Add in all the investors from other countries and see how it works out for those who want Thailand to remain Thailand...spoiler alert: Not Well. Go take a look at shinaoukville in Cambodia and see how that worked out so far. -

American Exceptionalism: Reality or Just a Myth?
pomchop replied to SoCal1990's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Like many other countries a lot of american citizens are not well traveled or well read and have no clue as to how good they have it compared to billions of other people around the world who were not lucky enough to be born a white american male. AKA born on third base. -
What a zoo Friday and Sat nights. Sure seemed even worse than last two years. Also seemed to me to be lots and lots of bkk folks who drove down , found parking way back on other side of buahkaow, walked to/from beach with their beach chairs, family and kids and all and then i assume lots of them drove back to bkk or wherever as hotels were full or difficult. Saw some of the bars near beach road had signs charging 40 baht to use toilet. As usual little to no public toilet facilities provided except for a few select vips. Total chaos. Crowds I guess loved it but not my cup of chai.

I believe she also complained about how the USA "gun cartels" make and sell and flood Mexico and other countries with every kind of gun made many of which are bought by the drug cartels....so maybe USA should stop the flood of war weapons into mexico before they blame the cartels for having the war machines to enable them to produce and flood the USA with drugs? Also it is reported that 46% of the funds in bitcoin are from drug cartels where they are able to launder dirty drug money. Maybe the USA might want to also attempt to limit that instead of promoting more and more bitcoin? With no ready access to AK47's and worse and the ability to easily launder their drug money it would not be so easy for the drug cartels to have more fire power than the mexican police and military? But of course the NRA would not want ANYTHING to interfere with the massive numbers of guns sold every minute in the USA even if tons of them end up with mexican cartels. There is more to the story than simply blaming mexico for drugs flooding into America. Plenty of blame to go around.

Possible problems with owning are legendary. All set in your own condo everything is newly renovated and happy as can be... then the new neighbors move in and love to do karaoke, or get into late night yelling fights or worse. Other owners quit paying hoa fees and the maintenance deteriorates. If its a house a mechanic opens a motorcy repair shop next door that is open til late night. Your neighbors bring in vicious dogs that terrorize you. The list never ends. Renting for sure also can have a big pile of problems but at least you can pack up and move on if it becomes intolerable. One size does not fit all.

Getting Old: Stoic About It or Endless Whinger?
pomchop replied to JK-Trilly's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
The older I get the more i realize for me swimming is the very best exercise. Too hot or too cold is not a problem in pattaya. Don't have to worry about tripping and falling or dodging motorbikes and cars. Very easy on the joints unlike jogging or too much walking. Can pretty much go as slow or fast as you want for a short time or a long time. Don't concern myself with pulling muscles or hernia or many other problems a gym workout can provide as ages advance. Only problems are you need to live in a condo with a big well maintained pool. Then you have to develop patience with a lot of brain dead idiots who have no clue about how to share a pool with people who may be trying to swim laps. For some it appears to be their first time in a pool but obviously they have been around water a lot as they have the brains of a tad pole. I swim twice a day for 30-45 mins each and have found that a lot of the aches and pains i was getting from walking five miles a day for years have pretty much disappeared. Never seem to get dizzy anymore which was a problem when walking in a lot of heat. My overall balance has improved and i seem to sleep better. I have lost some weight and for sure my muscles have toned up a lot more. Overall I have a much better feeling about my physical health which also makes the mental part better. -

I was told by agent who is going my retirement visa that i had to go back to immigration ...but she said only take one minute? I am thinking right one minute my butt...so i go at 1 pm on thursday...go as told to desk 8 show them a receipt from agent. They point to a guy sitting in a chair nearby so go to him. He pulls out phone takes pic of the receipt thing from agent and says follow me. I of course am thinking ok here we go to sit in line somewhere...but no, he simply wants me to stand in front of a white wall. Takes a pic of me and says finished? Total time probably 45 seconds. Shocked but happy.

Elderly British Man Injured in Electric Tricycle Crash in Pattaya
pomchop replied to Georgealbert's topic in Pattaya News
Whether on 3 or two wheels riding around at night especially it would be a good idea to wear a helmet and not be overly lubricated . No idea as to cocktails but pretty obvious no helmet on this case. Also good idea to make sure your vision is decent. I have no problem with people who need these to use them but you also need to use some basic common sense as to where and how you use them to avoid accidents as best you can. The long ago stated wisdom is "not if you have a motorbike accident in thailand but WHEN." Yes many will claim to have ridden forever and no accident. Then one day wham no matter how careful or good you may think you are. I hate to think what percent of farang (and thai) motorbike riders around soi buahkow are riding around every night after way too many cocktails. Most going too fast and no helmets not to mention riding and trying to check out all the girls along the route while weaving in and around all sorts of obstacles and people in the road. . I am amazed that there are not even more accidents. -
Best time of day for jomtien immigration?
pomchop replied to pomchop's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I really don't know. I was shocked that with 40 or so people in front of me where you get a number that I then went to counter one which is where they told me to sit for extension and i was number two in line. No idea how that could be unless all those other people were there for other things...IF i had been number 30 or so I suspect i would have sat there for several hours or told to come back tomorrow. Happy day for me. -
Best time of day for jomtien immigration?
pomchop replied to pomchop's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Geez as said thanks for the info....i did believe you which is why i went at 1...the dumb luck maybe was there were about 40 people in line ahead of me but when i got my number for the extension i was number 2 so my guess is i was lucky that the other 38 or so people were not there for basic 30 day extension or i would have not been number 2.....glad it's over and done -
Best time of day for jomtien immigration?
pomchop replied to pomchop's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
OK...for anyone interested ... went to jomtien immigration today a tuesday....got there at 12;50 stood in line with maybe 40 or so people ...moved quickly showed them packet of papers to include 30 day extension of stay, copy of passport and stamped page, tm30 rom condo, passport and one pic...got a number went inside and was #2 in line so i guess others in line were there for something else......five minutes later gal takes packet, takes 1900 thb, takes my pic and tells me to have a seat...at 1;20 they give me my passport all done with extension..less than 30 minutes arrival to out the door... WOW i was amazed as last year it was an all day affair...so not sure if today was just dumb luck or what but it was very efficient today... thanks for the tips...glad i went at 1 pm instead of early am like i did last year. -

Best time of day for jomtien immigration?
pomchop replied to pomchop's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
so recommend time around 10 am and then likely come back next day? is it possible to do anything online in advance for a simple 30 day extension..i seem to recall that something now available to shorten hassles there? .also bit confusing over how many days in advance of 60 day no visa expiration..some say 7 days some say one day? Don;t want a repeat of what i went through last year which was a major clusterfxxk all around. thanks for information .... -
Have to do the 30 day extension soon...been many times but not in six + months. Is it better now to get there early in morning or later in day? Have been early but so crowded they made bunch of us hang around all day then say oh come back tomorrow...if that is the case still is it better to go in afternoon fill it all out and then come back next day to get passport? what is recommended for least hassle / wait times? thanks

It is my understanding that the newer tests can adapt/adjust to whether you did or did not fast...not sure true but that is what i was told by a medical clinic.
