Up to you really. I wasnt really thinking about oomph, I just prefer to keep routing duties in a separate box, I lost a day when I was running a router in VM and the software went down (no backup) I had trouble redownloading and reinstalling, since then I run it on a separate unit, but each to their own, I just lost my confidence. @Mickeymaus I was just checking the link to JIB, i think red drives either seafarers/wd or whoever, would be better suited, but you are correct, the price for a 4TB is pretty good at the moment, about 1K THB / TB. Not so bad.
-
Apparently, the person who was telling me about SH drives said that a drive will either run for a very long time or fail within the first couple of weeks / months. I have 4x WD Red 4TB drives I bought about 8 years ago, still whirring away in servers in this heat. If you are just using them for a media server, why not? if the drive fails then you just let the automated software just re-DL the files for you.
-
If you are just building a media server, then 5400 are OK. If you aren't using the drives to store precious files then you could use 2nd hand drives, I hear they have jumped a little in price, but still better value than buying new. I think you can find them on shoppee. If buying new then 4TB wasn't the best value, you might want to try a couple of bigger drives for TB:THB ratio. Not too sure what you are saying about 50/50 of the drive, if you are a after some kind of backup, you can just mirror the drive. Im not a lover of using your server to route your traffic, are you thinking of PFsense or Opensense? I would run that on a separate passive computer. If you are using an old machine, you aren't using RAID or anything fancy, check out CasaOS, I noticed the App Store contains a lot more software now - easy to set up and maintain. You can use duplicati, to mirror your drives.

How to sell my motorbike and transfer registration
recom273 replied to Saigon's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
I sold two bikes a couple of months back .. no need for a certificate of residence. I did as the first post, two forms from the DLT, and handed him the green books - I did however give him a copy of my passport, visa sticker, entry stamp and current extension and told the buyer, if there was a problem to come back. I printed an invoice to cover my own back. I never heard from the buyer again. I never had a certificate of residence from a westerner when I have transferred a bike to my name either. I gather that each DLT is different, but I think generally (not in all cases or offices), getting a certificate of residence to sell a bike is a bit of a perpetuated myth. You know when you ask at a government office, and ask a direct question and they say "yes" and then you double check with a second question and the answer is also "yess" - however, if you don't have the necessary paper and you don't ask the question, then there isn't a problem. -
Yes - Not a lot to see. We rent a house with a zinc roof carport, it pops during the daytime. I had also read reports from Thai self builders about squeaking noises as the sheets expanded on a hot day and the foam rubbed together. The sheets are already up and fitted to the garage (just 5mm insulation), and no pops as our rental. The PU foam backed sheets are sealed in a foil, not as I was expecting, I was expecting bare foam to be rubbing together to make the squeaking sound.

We have been speaking to one company in Korat, they came out to measure last week and provided a design. A fair few expats recommend the quality, and the owner / designer is really cool. I am always happy that he understands my Thai and he understands the brief. I think better quality than anything you could buy from the store, at a price that's not out of the ball park. https://www.teeraphatfurniture.com/?mibextid=ykz3hl Obviously these guys are in Issan, but give them a call to see if they can help.

The question is "How do you install a VPN on a 3BB router" - the answer is, you cant - Exactly. so I suggested running a cheap and uncomplicated router to setup a secondary wifi network running an openVPN confiig and connect their TV to this network. If you run a secondary network then it doesn't matter what you run your IPTV app on. What is your question? I am not a lover of systemwide VPN, and secondly, I do not like to use proprietary software provided by a VPN provider.
-
They run their IPTV client on the whatever they use, android TV box, smart TV and connect to the dedicated wifi network.

Well - Result. As I said, I just put the date presuming my visa would be approved, by changing my current expiry date to 2024. It was approved yesterday, next report July.

What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2023)

First episode of a new season of The Curse aired last night - I wasn't a lover of the first series, considering the actors from People just do nothing and King Gary. Might be worth a look-see. I wish King Gary would make a return. -
Cheapest and easiest 1, https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt300n-v2/ 2. Get your openVPN key and credentials from your VPN provider. 3. Wire the mango router into your 3BB router, set up a wifi network .. then connect your TV to that wifi. The router already has the software, it's pretty intuitive. It's not so expensive, maybe 1000B, easily enough RAM for IPTV. I have one that I use for testing.

Cheers for the bump. I was sure it would have come up before, it's a fundamental flaw in what is, an excellent system. Let's see if and when it gets rejected .. its not actually an issue to drop the wife off to immigration and let her sort it, KKC immigration are pretty efficient, there is never a queue.

I just completed my latest 90 day online, this would be my 4th of the year. I applied for my next extension based upon marriage, a few weeks back and am in consideration period - and I need to return on 6th May, I guess without looking that's the expiry date of the current extension. Today, the 90 day online system wouldn't accept my submission, as the visa would expire within the next 90 days .. which is correct. I changed the date to the presumed expiry in 2024, will that be an issue?

Does your Thai partner know much about history outside of Thailand?

My wife is quite sharp, she picks up words really quickly from English TV, she studies the sentence and the inference and uses it two days later, and I’m like “where the hell did you get that word from?” - “oh, Patima used it on Top Chef” but then she comes out with classics like “Austria - is that close to Australia?” -
Yes - kind of, you stream to your car via your phone. The car doesn’t have a radio, it has a screen and and an amp, when you plug your phone into the car, the car gains the phones OS. To say it’s a Bluetooth / tethered radio is a bit simplistic. A BT radio won’t tell you your schedule when you start up, tell the navigation system your destination and or if you have left the lights on as you leave the gate.

I’m not really much of a surfer but I think 100 foot wave got mentioned here when it first came out a year or two ago. S02 is now airing on HBO. The first series was really well done - looking forward to a surprise series 02. -
What's life like for a single older expat in isaan?

I think wherever you are, you need to make something of it. If you live up here, you need projects, you need to get along with others who you meet, it helps if you are the kind of person to see another water buffalo up to its neck in water and think it’s a quaint scene. You need to be a bit self sufficient. For me, that’s far from boring but maybe I can appreciate it. -
Experiences suspending television service at True Visions.

It was harder than it should have been. I ended up paying an extra month, then you need to go back to the shop with the box, then she had forgotten her ID card (not sure why) and they wouldn’t accept the box - I used a long hdmi cable because their short cable would reach my storage unit. Because I didn’t return the cable they tried to charge me an over inflated charge to replace the hdmi like 700B. I don’t know where the original was, we paid around 1500-350B a month at different times for 10 years and they were quibbling over a cheap Chinese cable. Then my landlord wanted the dish gone, they refused to remove it. It was harder than should be, almost to the point of it being petty. The reason i moved was because AIS was offering free IPTV (Thai channels) and I was saving myself 4000B a year, True were offering something similar but their sales guy called me, didn’t want to speak English or Thai with me and put the phone down 4 months earlier, the offer expired. I asked for a refund, no can do. I offered them a couple of ways to make it right, then took two phone a numbers and TV services (which I had had for 12 years) to AIS. Then every month for the next 6 they would call and ask if I wanted to return to them. Strange company. -
I really do not like thai jasmine rice that much
recom273 replied to parafareno's topic in Thai Food
@parafareno I’m with you. I can’t stand the texture and the flavour any longer. I must say, if you can get it from farm and mill it yourself (not yourself but at a local mill) then it does have a lot better flavour. If I’m out and about I would prefer some cheaper rice that has a nuttier flavour. At home I prefer to eat increasingly more bread, pasta, red rice and French fries (Chinese potatoes are also a bit disappointing). I also along with loss of love for Jasmine rice, I cook a lot more indian or Chinese food - Thai food doesn’t seem to have much depth, just ingredients tossed in a pan with fish sauce / oyster sauce. It’s all a bit lazy and one note. Each to their own, just sayin’ -

I don't see the connection, your original comment infers that there is a lack of Westerners, lack of western restaurants, lack of diverse culture in Issan. The comment I quoted corrects you. For crying out loud, you are now telling us that Ao Nang is the center of the cultural universe .. LOL. It's a tourist ghetto. Even when I lived in Krabi province, I would never go there. -
You use mobile data - just like you browse Facebook or use LINE when out and about - I pay about 300B a month, post pay for my package which includes a certain amount of calls, which I use in excess of atm. I find that works for me, I use the data as a backup for work and have burnt through a data cap before. No, I dont use it as a hotspot, you just plug the phone into your car and you have a navigation / entertainment / talking computer system.
