I think if you move out of BKK or any tourist destination, I think the English proficiency of doctors in private hospitals is pretty low. It may be that they lack practice, confidence and enthusiasm. Yes, they are required to pass some kind of test but the level isn't that high, attending class and improving their ability is low on the list in comparison to their other studies. Some doctors speak English for their own personal development, others need to take a TOEIC or similar because it's demanded by an overseas university, but being Thailand, there always seems a work around for the basic Thailand qualification. I don't have any experiences in Bangkok Hospital, but I know a lot of the specialists move between hospitals, and agree, English ability isn't that great. I had a appointment cancelled the other week at Khon Kaen Uni Dental Clinic, the reason was, the guy didn't feel comfortable speaking English .. he was only pulling one tooth out, we could have spoken in Thai if he wanted. The whole point of the clinic is for practical experience, so the mature students are exposed to all situations before they enter the field, this went over this guys head.

What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2023)
recom273 replied to CharlieH's topic in Entertainment
Good call, I love this show. I was dragged screaming to musicals by my parents when I was a kid - I hate everything about them. Schmigadoon is just half an hour of nice TV, No gangs, no drugs, no guns, no police, no murder mystery. I haven't seen the second series yet, but the first was quite enchanting really simple and an update on a theme, I thought Apple did well here. -

Despite getting rough reviews here, I thought the first two were interesting, I think the story has yet to reveal itself, we have seen Common as the judiciary for 60 seconds, I’m pretty sure we will see him more as the plot expands. E03 just appeared - I might just put it on to pass a wet afternoon. -
Ukrainian Arrested for Illegally Working on Pha Ngan Island

He was rather silly (and lazy) then - it’s not a problem to get a work permit for ASEAN workers. afaik the penalty for illegally employing westerners was increased quite substantially a long while back. -
Thai university makes bulletproof vests from recycled plastic
recom273 replied to webfact's topic in Central Thailand News
Then this is something that Thailand could be a leader in, there’s always plenty of waste flip flops on the tide line, plenty of marine plastic. I wonder if we could avoid the step of dumping it in the sea first, and just use plastic bottles. -
Anyone recently renewed their 5 year license?
recom273 replied to Kenny202's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Yes, it changed over 6-12 months ago (as far as I can tell, because that's the gap when I did my bike renew and car test). No need to go to DLT to request a certificate. -
New car with Apple play and Android play
recom273 replied to mrmicbkktxl's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
No, you cant watch video, you plug in a data cable into your phone (although there are bluetooth adaptors, they have a tendency to be unreliable) Then a limited number of apps become available on your cars touchscreen (for your own safety) Basically, Maps / Google maps / Waze, spotify / Apple Music / some other music apps are CarPlay enabled, Messages (SMS) / LINE / Telegram - you can get your messages read out to you, you can dictate / send and Calendar, I think that's about it, although you can do a fair bit of funky stuff with shortcuts. It's rather annoying, because you cant use Soundcloud app, and YouTube. I understand what you are saying, but I dont think there is the ability to add additional headrest panels into the system, it's quite primitive in some respects. The phones screen becomes inoperable, but you just need to confirm you are not moving to use it. The wife has android, she uses spotify / google maps - I found it a bit tricky to find an android data cable, a lot of the cheaper ones are just charging cables, fwiw. -
Anyone recently renewed their 5 year license?
recom273 replied to Kenny202's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Where are you? This used to be the way in Hat Yai, so I rode there to get the letter and they had changed the procedure, I didn’t renew my license because of Covid and the non-Thai online application then and then when I moved to Khon Kaen, immigration wanted a letter from DLT - then when I went back to do my car one, they dropped the procedure of requesting letter from DLT. -

Cool .. glad you saw the post, I forgot who posted the request. If you cant find it, I can upload somewhere. Im looking forward to this one, not that I have an interest in kiddy fiddlers. I find it fascinating that as a kid during this time, it this was just totally missed. There was another, National Treasure, National Disgrace about Stuart Hall, Rolf, Jimmy and and the Netflix documentary about Saville from last year. -
New rental owner wil not assist with TM30
recom273 replied to jumbo's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
By law 24 hours but when we moved during Covid the local authority wanted us to isolate for 2 weeks. When we did the tm30, immigration didn’t care about a thing, if they did we would have just changed the date of arrival. Your landlord is kind of correct, I got a 2000B fine once, it only came to rise when I visited to get a certificate of residence. Immigration probably won’t be actively hunting down tm30 offenders. The technical term is not the possessor - it’s the housemaster which could be the owner, landlord or the renter. When it was discovered that I hadn’t filed a Tm30, this was back in the day when no one filed them. They called the landlord, he said, didn’t know, didn’t care, wasn’t his responsibility, no he wouldn’t attend immigration, no he wouldn’t be paying a fine, all he did was rent a house for 5K a month. In the end I paid otherwise they wouldn’t issue the certificate. Hotels may be different, but anyone who thinks immigration will go after a private landlord is dreaming, it’s the ultimate responsibility of the “housemaster” who is the person who signs the lease, out wife or girlfriend, which in turn the westerner pays. -

What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2023)
recom273 replied to CharlieH's topic in Entertainment
Damn - I just watched third episode of The Citadel last night - I finished the episode and I had no idea what I had just watched, total pile of steaming crap. Paramount+ has had some decent stuff recently, I downloaded Fatal Attraction, will give it a look along with The Silo - I think this series of The Curse is slightly better than the last, good for a 30 min break watch. -
That's a lot of money - Like I said, my first example is the TV area, which incorporates 6x LED downlight in a circuit, is controlled by two switches that control one dimmer module in the wiring closet #1 charges 500B per switch, I consider this to be a fair price - He installs the conduit, he runs the cable to a central position and then each of the lights are included in the price, he thinks its nothing to drill a hole in the ceiling, pull the cable, make off and put the light in the hole - 1000B in total. #2 charges 350B per bulb .. that's the same work as #1 but he charges 6x 350B=2100B. Neither are electricians, they are installers. I have learned through this building process that just because people say they can do something and may charge accordingly, it doesnt mean that the work will be done to any quality. I think you are confused, this isnt an exercise in being cheap, its about getting the correct qualified service, which is one of the reasons we broke off from our main contractor who was just throwing random sub-contractors at the job, which is often the case in Thailand. We aren't talking 300B a point, we are talking about the whole job for the property, I would like it to come in under 50K labour, the second guy would be charging 100K for the same service. Would you just pay that blindly? Interesting, I just spoke to the qualified electrician mentioned by @sometimewoodworker who charges less than 500B but thinks the same, per switch, he doesnt charge per bulb.

But you have a Arlo cloud server? There is nothing wrong with self hosting your own cloud, something like nextcloud on a server in Europe.
-
Yes, this is very true, I used to teach at a tech college and I can assess these installers very well by comparing them to my students - like the aircon course were nice guys, hardly ever turned up to class, thick as two planks - but their course gave them the ability to say they could instal electrics - they can hammer a few clips and string a cable between an existing point and that's about it. The guys that study electrical, there were two types, the guys that went on to work in an industrial setting and those who didnt. I think 200 is reasonable, could you DM me his details? Its one thing I dont want to scrimp on as I have a bit of an interest in it, not that im a sparks - we found a guy yesterday who claimed to be an electrical engineer, after university - but he refused to travel out of the city, he wanted petrol money to come 25 mins down the road to talk to us and then declined, he said he had enough work around Buang Nong Korn, the big lake with all the hi-so houses and moo bans in Khon Kaen.

You can add those cameras to surveillance station, then you can use resillio sync to sync a folder to the cloud - what cloud services do you already pay for? I understand you dont want to use google, I use none of them - but maybe you could rent a very cheap server.
-
https://www.zdnet.com/home-and-office/smart-home/arlo-will-end-support-for-these-older-cameras-in-april-heres-what-you-need-to-know/ EOL after only 4 years, Nice! Shame really, the first thing I check is security flaws, there doesn't seem to be any issues with Arlo. You could integrate those cameras into another system, for instance, Motioneye on your home computer is a simple thing you could setup, but wouldn't have the advanced features that you enjoy with ARLO. Or you could update your cameras, after 4 years, your cameras sensor will be out of date, and you will probably get better performance for less money with a new camera, if you can use your existing base station. This is why I refer to run a stand alone system, I can buy a new higher spec camera which will pick put greater detail and retire perfectly good "old" cameras to less critical areas, like monitoring the cat,

We have nearly finished our blockwork on the house, in Khon Kaen and are looking around for an electrician. We require "labour only" which is not a problem there are plenty of electricians around, we parted company with our main contractor and find it better to select individual trades to do specific jobs. The price seems to vary slightly - just wondering about other peoples experiences. The price seems to be based upon a "joot" - that's like a plug point, or a switch / bulb. Yesterday, we met with two guys. Sparks #1 - Charges 500B per "joot" - this seems higher than the norm, however, for lighting he charges per switch - So, we have 6 downlighters in our TV area, controlled by a switch at both entry points - so 500B x 2= 1000B for the 6x LED downlighters. I asked about power to my TV cupboard, maybe 8x plugs under the TV, 2x behind the TV and a spur for the sub bass - that's just one "joot" + a few baht for the spur. I didn't like the guy at first, but he warmed on me during the meet. Sparks #2 - Charges 350B per "joot" - I liked this guy and his wife, we explained that we will deviate from the plan as they were just drawn by the tessaban architect, we explained about the 6 downlighters x 2 switches (as an initial example) - His pricing was 350B for each of the switches+ 1 bulb then 350B for each subsequent bulb - I explained that there were 18 LED downlight in the open plan living area, and that I wouldn't be paying 6K for installation, more than double the price of #1. He couldn't see the bigger picture, I guess a lot of his local trade just require a combination plug / light and run a chain of extension leads from one plug. We apologized and let him go, no sense in wasting his / my time although the missus was "all Thai" and said we would call, I stopped all this and explained that he wasn't offering a competitive pricing model. He said that not all electricians price the same - and that's fair enough, however, I dont think he offered anything different from the first guy. Both asked for a very reasonable and similar price to run cable from the electric pole on the road and to set up the consumer unit. I was kind of looking for someone with a bit of enthusiasm, with regard to data / cctv maybe with a bit of creative lighting knowledge picked up along the way - just as I was when this was my job - but I guess that's asking too much, lol, but no problem. Then a Thai friend tells me #3 that the price per "joot" is set by the tessaban, that's 150B per point .. I know there's a cats chance in hell to get that price and I believe you get what you pay for .. I imagine the rental houses I live in were done by the 150B spark, which is why my TV turns off when anyone turns on a light in the house. Can anyone share their experience?

Arlo cameras output RTSP - You can use this stream from your existing cameras. This can be utilized by anything, Synology have a security app on their NAS - you can use their app "DS Video" on your phone to receive notifications and view footage. LOL? ProjectAI is part of Blue Iris NVR, it analyses the video feed and alerts you / only records what you want. It's nothing to do with social media. I dont know if its been integrated in to ProjectAI yet, but there was a library for "Frigate" which could ANPR / read Thai number plates. Im currently building my house, so my system is down, but looking forward to playing around in the future, a time when my cameras can read my numberplate and will automatically open the gate for me. I hate having to stop use perfectly good kit, I don't like to pay for extra services when I can utilize what I already have, I don't want to let unknown apps or systems on my own network - So I have in the past / will in the near future maintain my own security system / home automation system, if you are not a hobbiest - then Reolink might have some features https://reolink.com that interest you.
-
This is the major reason people should avoid proprietary systems and use the tools available to make your own. Companies can go bust overnight or just drop support. Does your Arlo system output an RTSP stream that you can incorporate in a new system? You watched the hookup as recommended, you can see videos about blue iris / ProjectAI - you can quite easily piece together your own system. It's hard to tell what you found so good about Arlo, is it person detection that sends an alert and then sends those clips to the cloud? You can do that yourself syncing a folder on your blue iris machine to any cloud service.

I am not too sure if a VPN will secure your crypto currency wallet. I think better to isolate your machine from the rest of your network. Don't use pirate software / malware / untrusted software / etc on that machine and then put that machine on a separate VLAN - away from things like IOT devices. Maintain strict network practices - for instance create a guest LAN for kids and visiting friends who may not understand the rules. I will check out "what some advise" as I'm interested but not fanatical about security. Yup, your Nord purchase will allow you to play poker and watch Charlies coronation on iplayer. A server, is a basically a remote computer, when you use your new NordVPN, you click, "London, UK" and your traffic will appear with a UK IP address, that's the address of the server in London. Lots of other people use that server, so basically, Nord knows everything that happens - I maintain my own server, its a shared IP between a handful of people, the datacenter where the server is housed may monitor / log that traffic, but I doubt they harvest the data, in a way that a VPN provider certainly does.
-
Agreed. Mullvad is considered one of the most trustworthy providers, however your requirements dictate which provider is best. For accessing geo-restricted video content, I use PIA, which is a pretty dubious provider, however, I isolate that machine from the rest of my network. I would never use a system wide VPN, but there are a lot of questions here on how to set up a VPN on a router, where you are asking for problems. Using proprietary software fro the provider is also sketchy. Nothing in this world is free, although Windscribe and Proton (I think that protons is free similar to windscribe) seem trustworthy to a point, but I had issues getting access to some video streams using them. For security purposes, I run my own VPN server in a data center in France. If the OP is worried about security, running OpenVPN on your own server may be better than subscribing to a service.

I have an ATV and a tizen TV, so no need for me to load android TV version. I have nothing to do with any android device, so I can't comment. It's quite confusing what they call their service. Is it AppleTV+? have they changed to to appleTV? or (+) - In the appstore screenshot I took, the only + is on the top tab, the rest refers top appleTV. The ATV app is appleTV. Are there now two tiers? A regular and a + ?
