Thailand urged to prioritise accessible tourism for disabled and elderly
recom273 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Bangkok is pretty crap, planning, public transport and access for disabled is appalling, well behind other nations. I don't consider myself disabled, I dont own a wheelchair or any aid, but have occasional mobility issues .. some things are generally OK in Thailand. If i'm having a bad day, I can be selective on where I go and what I do. Things can be taken slowly here, life is more relaxed, and with the overstaffing at most shops and attractions there is always someone to advise or assist. Obviously if you are in a wheelchair you are going to have difficulty visiting some attractions, but I can see some effort is made, such as slopes to replace steps. Even at my immigration office, it would be impossible for a person who couldn't walk to attend the main office as they have no lift but they do have a bell on a lower level and an officer will come down and deal with you in the lobby. I was feeling lazy one time and waited downstairs while my wife went upstairs to hand in some papers, the officer came down to explain something I already knew. I could have walked up the stairs if I wanted to, the stairs at KKC bus station are really steep tho, I was just on the phone downstairs getting ready to go up. I thought that was a nice touch. I don't have a disabled badge on my truck, but I never have problem speaking to the security guard and getting a priority parking space without any discussion or assessment, a lot of shops (like the huge DIY megastores) provide wheelchairs if needed and the service is excellent, there is no delay, someone is on the radio to control, a wheelchair provided along with an offer of a staff member to push you around even when its never needed. The airlines have quite a good free service when booked in advance, they will upgrade your seat, hold back other passengers and get you on board first - even if it means holding the passengers in the departure lounge for 10 mins for you to climb the steps. On a local level, I can afford to live in my own place that I designed to meet my current needs and I hope in the future, I am not going to be stuck in some sheltered housing. I can go to 7-11 on my bike, and park 2m from the door without troubling anyone. My best mate in the UK died of a progressive illness before we made it to 40 , he was given a disabled badge for his car but had difficulty in getting a disabled bay outside his house because the house he bought when he was healthy, was on a busy residential street. After finally being granted a space he would often find the bay occupied by others, his wife would have to knock on neighbors door or the police called only to find a selfish driver doing their shopping. I wouldn't want to deal with this. I know the points I have mentioned maybe small, maybe they are offensive to registered disabled who have no choice, and I don't have enough experience to compare. As you say, it CAN be done. Thai people here don't quite understand disability, but they generally will go above and beyond to assist because its the way they would assist older people who they have greater respect for (I know its not always about assistance, its about living the same life as an able bodied person) - I would rather be here, doing my own thing, than being dumped in sheltered housing, with rules and regulations to assist me with no real assistance in my home country. -
Correct about the transfer, but if you open a new account, add it to your existing accounts on the banking app, then you can transfer between accounts don't pay charges. I sat there in disbelief when the clerk informed me the charge was 2000B+ in Kasikorn when I opened a new account at the local branch.

Someone mentioned some invite only trackers https://hdfans.org/signup.php Is open for signups today (Friday) - maybe worth a look, Chinese tackers (this is a Chinese tracker) become quite popular and difficult to get into after a while.

Of course I read the post. Why cant you put it into bridge mode yourself? The PPoE credentials come taped to the router box on the initial install, you can request them from 3BB, they dont give them immediately any more, because of security concerns, but they send them via SMS after ID check. Why not try the TP-link ONT - but I would ask them for the Huawei ONT I suggested first.
-
That is so weird .. I have a 3BB ONT .. you can just plug that into your pfsense router. Just ask them for one. Its a Huawei EG8010H (I think that's what it is but too lazy to get up and check). When they had some issues configuring the ONT, they gave me a GPON router and put it into bridge mode .. no questions asked, no bribes necessary. They also bought two different GPON because they were sure it was a hardware issue. Unifi are offering a fibre GPON - its about $45 in the states, im sure its not available here, it may work or may not work with Thai ISP, but time will tell.

@longball53098 The post title is for an app .. I may have been mislead on this point, I didn’t even check, my comment was general because it’s not uncommon for well meaning contributors to a post an app for a android box, free VPN or a website with video content on AN. The websites are not the same as sbs, iplayer or whatever streaming service people use. I just think as time goes on, data mining becomes more sophisticated and we increasing don’t really understand the need or the methods - the more we should be aware of “free” websites, without wishing to patronize, maybe this is more relevant to less tech-savy members who would blindly grant systemwide permissions because a friend recommended this app to get … There is no such thing as a free lunch, and if you aren’t paying for the product, you are the product. Anyway, I’m off to fill some sandbags and fold another tin foil hat. Anyone else is free to do what they want.
-
Absolutely not - I wouldn’t say I would try to avoid using all these services, if I went to extremes then i would go crazy, but I try to be aware and find alternatives if I can. I mentioned Russia and China as culprits, I neglected to mention the US but assumed people know that google and Dropbox are US companies all doing the same. Again, in this case, servers and bandwidth are not free, they need to be paid for - users should just ask themselves how? by whom and why?
-
I didn’t mention virus. You give these apps permissions when you install them. Like I said, I don’t particularly care what you do but users should be aware that these sites are there for a purpose, they aren’t community based or open source, they are collecting your data which they sell onward. Some just your location, your computer, your data but others are more nefarious because you give them access to your network when you install. I hope you understand.

Blocking of BBC interview with Pita
recom273 replied to anchadian's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Can I offer a possible explanation .. Clearly there is not a conspiracy, as we can all watch the interview on BBC News App without a VPN. However, certain broadcasts are only available to UK license payers, certain "live" or first broadcasts are not available to that region, and you get the grey screen. Good replies to the Jonathan Heads questions. -

I just started this .. hard to tell as only two episodes of four available atm. Ghosts of Beirut on Showtime -
After years of using services, such as google, dropbox, online cloud storage for your CCTV .. it amazes me that people still want to trust "free" pirate TV streaming apps. An alarming number of the free VPN services and free ad-blockers are owned and controlled by Chinese companies. Traditionally, the video streamers are Russian, due to lack of IP enforcement. There is no such thing as a free lunch, these services exist for a reason. Some are more clandestine and invasive than others, some are just mining your online habits, others you give access to your home network, the same network you are doing your financial management with. There are safer ways to get your viewing content, although I dont use it, KODI has a plug-in that streams torrent content, that seems quite popular with AN users. I don't particularly care either how people manage their online security, maybe im a little more concerned than others, but users should be aware, free isn't always free.

I think the golden years were pre-taksin. For example, does anyone remember visa runs and border bounces without leaving home? Who needed dodgy retirement agencies then. Back in those days you could party all night, everywhere. MF can’t do much worse to effect expats than the last PMs tenure. I don’t see it as just visa related, or whatever, but the economy certainly need needs a boost. Theres also a lot of things that need changing, not least the mentality of the nation before things improve or change radically.

It’s usually a year minimum contract - Do you really need a specific service? I just tell 3BB that I don’t want their free router, they mumbled, and the fitters took it back with them. AIS is a hit different as they seem to offer packages where you rent a mesh system.
-
Easiest, but not the best as you create a double NAT - maybe for some people who have a cctv system or use torrents - Putting the GPON into bridge mode is as simple as calling up 3BB, they can do it remotely or send an engineer and assist you on where to put you PPoE credentials, if required. Double protection from hackers? It takes about 3 mins to hack your wifi - why anyone else would want to get into your secondary router? 3BB provide a letter when you first sign up, they send the credentials and then the router arrives later. The technicians ask for the letter and enter the details. A little while ago they stopped giving the details verbally from the helpline, but there is a delay of maybe upto a day before they send via sms. The girl mumbled something about security, which is fair enough, but annoying if you are looking for that first letter they sent 15 years ago.
-
3BB offer a ONT - you connect your router, enter you PPoE credentials, and the local area VLAN and you are away.

Guessing he uses it as surge protection, which isn’t quite correct, but whatever. Actually, putting a monitor on a UPS is not bad, I need to do it. I have a nice rack mount UPS that will run a couple of servers for an hour and a bit, but not my desktop and monitor - so when the power goes, I can’t shut down the servers, I need to connect a laptop to the switch. Lol.

Fatal Attraction lasted 2 episodes before I gave it up. Just started on this -
Are your forks leaking? You just need a service / rebuild - if you trust the garage, I think that’s an OK price, I think I have paid that before. I blew a seal before, I was in Laos, we did a temporary fix and I limped back home and my local trusted bike shop serviced both, for about this price. The chain, I would buy an EK chain or similar and get the garage to fit it, KTM aren’t going to make a chain for you, they will just buy from a distributor and put it on for you. You can search for Magnum, they are the Thai distributor for EK. The rear brake does not have enough info to give an opinion.

Oh, wife just got off a call to a friend in the south - The democrats were paying 1000B per vote in Songkhla. The friend was bemoaning southerners reluctancy to change from the democrats, as MF would offer a better manifesto for all. Then the wife asked "So did you vote for Gor Gai (MF)". "Oh, no, I wanted my 1000B" she replied.

In our small Issan village the first people to stump up were Auntins crew, they paid per person to attend a rally at the temple, I forget the price, next came Phua Thai - they were offering 300B per household to attend a rally (to say rally, it was a couple of people showing a video of a big provincial rally). I dont know the ins and outs, but we live in a rental and we don't have the tabian baan, the owner went and took the 300B so "we" didn't go and didn't collect the payment. Then yesterday, the wife went to the voting station at the temple with a friend and voted for PT. I asked did she collect her payment, she asked her friend if she could get her tickle, but had been told that the landlord had collected already our fee (300B) for the house. The friend knew of a local person who was in charge of distributing the pot. It's not a case of someone standing outside the door and handing out brown notes. I don't think MF were interested in wasting any money, I never heard they they were offering anything in our area. It was foregone that PT would get all the votes in our area. I don't even think it was necessary for PT to put their hands in their pockets, the hate for Prayut is so deep and voting red is is engrained that they would have probably won anyway.

Moving from AIS to DTAC while keeping existing number
recom273 replied to XGM's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
I guess we all have a different experience, I moved from True to AIS, because True customer service is really bad. As mentioned, DTAC is soon to become True. So you may be jumping from the frying pan to the fire. -

This thread is totally derailed, so may aswell continue. KKU Dental Hospital is amazing, for about a year now I have been in a program to address some issues that have been neglecting for years now. The waiting times are quite long, but i think it’s worth it. The appointment system is a bit bewildering, but the dental students knowledgeable and understanding. (To say they are students is a bit loose, in the specialist clinics it’s post graduates and the lecturers who do the work). The new wing where they do the general work and the special clinic are a clinical environment, the lower floor isnt so high tech but ok. The dentists usually speak good English, they will always try to speak Thai with my wife which is mildly annoying, but the cancellation by the dentist was most unusual. Pricing is very transparent and clear, you pay something like 50B to use the facilities and they tell you the price at the start of treatment programme (not when you arrive or surprise you when you go to leave) - for example, my first visit to the general clinic, he wanted me to go for x-rays, he asked if I could walk across the road for x-rays and said it would be around 500B, am I OK with that? I am never upset when I am presented with the bill, they even asked if I wanted to be prescribed some I paracetamol, I had none at home so accepted, it was cheaper than 7-11 ???? . In comparison to RAM hospital that once sent me home with a pack to change dressings consisting of things that I could have bought in any pharmacy at a small fraction of the price. Some guys on Facebook talk of rough treatment at KKU, but on the whole for me, can’t praise them enough. This isn’t the first time I have tried to use a uni dental clinic and the only info I could get from the hospital reception was that it was only evenings and I heard it was difficult to attend because you had to arrive early and join the queue with a possibility of not being seen, at KKU it’s certainly not the case.
