Interestingly enough, this is actually an issue in many so called western countries as well.

A quick search shows that for example UK between 2011 and 2015,  219,008 drivers got caught drunk driving.

    That is a big number!

This is no excuse for Thailand of course, which struggles with a more Maipen rai attitude to traffic issues in general.

Your number may be correct, but how many of those caught over the limit killed someone?

This guy is a hero, he, in one single act of bravery has just highlighted "on no uncertain terms" one of the biggest problems with the transport/bus industry, drivers being pushed to the point they cannot function safely and end up going of a cliff ....literally

Over worked requiring energy drinks/drugs to keep going - unfortunately absolutely nothing will happen because every solution to every problem on Thailands roads requires investment and some sort of level of standards and enforcement, exactly why this country is still 3rd world even though it thinks it's the hub of SE Asia in everything.....it isn't

It is the hub of everything, it called CHAOS!

thankfully i did the thai beach thing in the mid 1990s when samui could truly be described as paradise. went back three years ago and couldnt wait to leave. awful place.

Quite agree. Phuket used to be a very nice place to visit years ago. I have no intention of visiting again after my last, 2 years ago. I can remember Patong as a small fishing village with just a few hotels and tourists, as was Hua Hin. Both spoilt beyond redemption due mainly to greed. Why? No idea of town and country planning or seeing beyond today.

  4. I had something similar a few years back. I know the contract my wife signed was for minimum 6 months. Rather than continue with the letting, we decided to end it and stay at a small hotel for the 10 days to completion of our building. The landlord refused to return the deposit, insisting the contract was for 12 months. I of course objected but my dear lady said to forget it as it would cause more trouble than the B5000 was worth. No one likes being obviously ripped off, but it is best to write it off to experience than being found staring sightless at the sky. Which road to take is a no brainer.

I believe the survey should offer more options. For example, I think that those coming for Visa-exempt stays of 30 days, should not necessarily require such health insurance. Whereas all who want to stay longer, SETV or METV or any sort of non-immigrant Visas, should show proof of a health insurance. But then again: How do they want to check those insurances? There is no standard policy and it could be in a language that is not understood (and no, I don't mean English in this case).

Grandfathering must taken into account as well, or do they really want to kick out that 78 year old who has lived in the country for 20+ years without any wrongdoing only because he does not have health insurance (but enough money to care for his life and probably his Thai family members). Of course they COULD do that but it would be inhuman

Inhumane! Do you really believe that would be a consideration?

For goodness sake stop being so bloody holly your not a grammar expert, I could not give a monkeys arse if there are to many plastic bags in the world when children are dying every day of starvation, or from other easily curable diseases but no plastic bloody bags are far more important to you aren't they, so get off your lilly white charger and try and do some real good for a change

One small step for Thai's, one giant step for Thailand.

Stop with all those soapseries and show them something decent so they learn something usefull.

I have never ever seen a documentary on Thai tv, always the lowclass programs only. It's time they grow up. Show them how other countries develop and improved and how nice it can be in Thailand if they all learned some manners and ways to improve it.

I quite agree, but your thoughts are very much pie in the sky and will remain so for many more years to come.

  8. I see a few saying western union are expensive, but I have found them to be very cheap. My first card transaction was for their max amount of 800GBP. I can confirm this was originally refused by my bank. A call soon cleared this. I have since tranferred 4000GBP on three occasions with no problem, the transfer fee has been 2:90GBP on each occasion. The amount sent has matched the posted KTB exchange rate.  A bank to bank TT transfer would cost 20GBP, so I'm happy to continue with western union.
