  1. It is because the same "what ifs" keep coming round and they could easily be substituted for ICEV "what if" scenarios. ie. they are pointless. Rare events can happen to any type of vehicle. You asked what if you were at home and the actual charger in your car somehow broke like you have found the great flaw in EVs! My answer, you get it collected and fixed. What happens if your clutch packs in in your ICEV? You get it picked up and fixed. What happens if your gearbox disintegrates (happened on my WRX after my first set of mods)? You get it collected and fixed. Neither of those scenarios (or my recent Honda episode) are reasons not to buy an ICE, they are just rare events that can happen, just like your theoretical (and unlikely) "all of a sudden the charger breaks" scenario which you posted as though you've put the nail in the EV coffin.
  2. Interesting. I worked for Loxley for 3-4 years when I first came to Thailand.
  3. If your wall box failed you plug it in to any normal socket instead. Not stuffed, but slow. If the actual charger on the car failed you would need to have the car taken to be fixed I would imagine. Likewise if your clutch failed, or your gearbox seized, or your petrol cap jammed. Just more stupid "what ifs" really. Pointless and irritating. Or do ICEVs just keep on working 100% of the time for 100% of the people? Guess what, my wife drove our Honda HR-V (ICEV) home last week and parked it. The next morning it was dead. Stuck in park. No electrics (not even the horn would work). We needed two trucks to get it moved and taken back to Honda. So what if that happens? Should I go posting in ICEV threads to ask what you do with your ICEV if that happens? What if what if what if what if. Yawn yawn yawn yawn.
  4. Thank you everyone for the helpful replies. So seems like I'm safe to leave it till I get back, even if I stay a little longer than planned and might only have a week or so to do it. Important that I remember to get a re-entry permit at the airport when I leave. So my understanding from the replies is that I apply before the 3rd July (my current visa expiry) and they will not give it me right away but will stamp me as "under consideration" and extend my permission to stay to whenever this "under consideration" period extends to. Then if approved I'll get a notification of some sort and go back to get the 12 month stamp? Thanks again to all.
  5. It would help if you gave an indication of budget or what you are looking for? Just food, or do you want to booze it up? If you want a treat and to make a day of it there is no better than the Sunday brunch at Trader Vic's at the Anantara Riverside. Inside and outdoor seating right on the river, free boat service from Saphan Taksin BTS. Absolutely incredible buffet selection with top quality food: Indian, sushi, lots of seafood, oysters, pasta stations, BBQ stations, salads, meats, dim sum, cheeses, desserts etc. Plus you can order from about 12 a la cart dishes whenever you like: Hokkaido scallops, Australian steak, US prime rib, lobster thermidore, Alaskan king crab, NZ steamed mussels and other goodness which I don't remember - all cooked to order and as much as you like. This makes a difference as it is not sitting under heat lamps, it is cooked fresh when you order it. It's not cheap, 3,500++ including alcohol: beers, wines, spirits, sparkling wine, cocktails (their bloody marys are superb). It's my go to place for a special day out. https://tradervicsbangkok.com/events/ If you don't want something that extravagant the brunch buffet at the Landmark was always excellent although I haven't been for a few years now. Not sure what they charge these days but believe you can get deals on eatigo.
  6. Hi. After 28 years of working here (non B and WPs) I recently changed to a non O based on marriage as I am currently not working. I got a 90 day visa in Vientiane and re-entered Thailand on 5th April, giving me permission to stay until 3rd July. I planned to apply for a 12 month extension in mid-June at CW. However something has come up and it looks as though I now have to go to the UK from 10-23 June or thereabouts. What is my best option? Is it too late to do the renewal application when I come back? And conversely is it too early to do it before I leave? As I have never done this before I am unsure so any advice would be highly appreciated as I am not sure what is best. Many thanks. Edit: I thought about simply applying for another 90 day non O in London while I am there but a) that would be massively inconvenient as I don't plan on staying in London for too long, and b) their website says it is only for UK residents. I am a citizen, but not a resident.
  7. Where in London isn't served by a bus? London has an excellent bus service. Tube is hit and miss depending on where you live, but the buses are excellent. And in my recent visits back I have clearly noticed that the traffic is almost non existent. I have family in London and they wouldn't consider having a car as the public transport is so good. The only real reason for needing one is for food shopping but now most people do that online and never visit a supermarket. I've owned cars all my life but if I lived in London I wouldn't consider it, there is just no need for 90% of people.
  8. The racism level on this thread is high. A successful immigrant Muslim just doesn't sit well with so many of the culturally challenged.
  9. Or, to rephrase, petrol and diesel cars are really noisy.
  10. Yeah I have to say everything I have seen and read (including videos posted) suggests that Singapore Airlines and the AOT handled things really well. Good to know the response teams are well trained and the operation went smoothly. In the 18 years since the airport opened nothing like this has ever happened so it is reassuring to see how well organised it was after the plane touched down. Well done to all involved, especially the pilots and medical staff.
  11. Only on AN can a news article on turbulence result in pages and pages of people arguing about the definition of a heart attack and arguing about what time breakfast is served on planes. Some people have way too much time on their hands.
  12. I could be wrong. I thought last time I was in Shell they tried to upsell my to their 97 option and it was considerably more expensive. However I could definitely be wrong. I'll look next time I go. It was definitely V-Power they were upselling, Thought they told me it was 97 but starting to doubt myself, you are probably right. Will check next time.
  13. Bangchak and Shell both sell 97. You are correct that PTT do not.
  14. It's hardly ghastly. It's a great looking car and extremely well specced (23 speaker Dolby Atmos system anyone?). Design was led by Chris Bangle with a team of other ex MB and BMW designers. It's true they are having teething problems with initial build quality but I am 100% sure these will be quickly ironed out. The rest of the car is light years ahead of any FFF car. Perhaps you think it's ghastly because it isn't covered in stickers or go faster stripes? https://insideevs.com/reviews/720158/xiaomi-su7-wheelsboy-review-china/
  15. No. Benjakitti Park opened in 1992. The expansion opened two years ago.
  16. You're right, I thought maybe the light bar was an aftermarket addition, but Gweiloman is right - it's a Vinfast. And I will say that's in Laos: the guy is speaking Laos, not Thai. So there you go EOW - it's a Vinfast and it is in Laos. JB is also right that they are horrid, ugly, cheaply built things and I wouldn't buy one in a million years. Oh, and Vinfast never crossed my mind as this is EVs in Thailand and they are not on the road here yet. But I have seen them in Laos. So sorry EOW, you lose the point I gave you earlier.
  17. Congrats - you finally got one!! Must be a good start to your week! Aion Y Plus? The bloke on the video says Neta but those lights don't look like a Neta.
  18. As someone already told you, it is at least a 15 minute walk from Saphan Taksin BTS. So if you have a cast it's not going to work for you. Take a taxi.
  19. Yes, just like every single other mass transit line in Thailand - they all have lifts for wheelchair users and for the general public. Every single station on every single line as far as I am aware. Why would this be any different? Have you ever been to Bangkok? (Yes, the very first BTS lines didn't have them in their original construction but that was 25+ years ago). It'll almost certainly be a PPP, again like every other mass transit line in Thailand. The private sector will pay to build it in exchange for an operating concession for thirty years, Again like every single other mass transit project in Thailand. Right, of course.
  20. Too late now but in case it helps anyone else. There is short term parking available in two huge multistory car parks. As you drive up to the airport you'll see it signposted to the right - I think it says "Car parking (5fl)". Charges are:
  21. Most ATs have a manual mode. My XC40 has an 8-speed auto with manual selection. My previous car had a 6-speed auto with manual selection. Probably 90% of auto cars I have driven have some sort of manual selection.
  22. Interesting. Apparently will be installed and shipped in cars this year. The article is a little short on technical detail though but LFP, a 1,000 km range and 400 kms from a 10 minute charge. https://www.yahoo.com/tech/china-develops-revolutionary-electric-car-113440354.html#:~:text=The IEA's Global Critical Minerals, this year%2C the IEA said. Ah, more technical detail on CATL's website. Actually 600kms from a 10 minute charge - they are building their own super fast charging network in China so you wouldn't get that here, but the technology is improving in leaps and bounds and will eventually spread globally. Bring it on. https://www.catl.com/en/news/6239.html
  23. My HR-V has flappy paddles that fake gear changes. Ridiculous.
  24. I was giving my opinion on CVTs on a thread about CVTs.
