Moving away from using an agent
Andre0720 replied to eddyod's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Once an Agent is used to obtain a 'Visa extension', Immigration will try their best so that procedure is used again and again. They very easily see that an Agent has been used before. Trying do get another 'extension' without the Agent, well then, "the documents that you are filing with your application for another extension, is suddenly 'outdated", so must be redone. Once it is redone, you show up again at Immigration, but then Oh, there is a need to obtain a certification from your embassy. And so one, until you feel out of time. Immigration wants you to use an Agent, first time, 35,000 Bt. in cases of no funds in the bank. Second time, with funds in the bank, 14,000 Bt. They want this money. This is what has replaced the former brown envelopes to individual IO. This new system is governed way at the top, and money is shared, according to the will of the 'top'. This is as legal a procedure as any other procedure. If you change location to obtain a 'retirement extension', might be possible. But I do not know. But if you want to get this 'retirement visa extension, without the use of an Agent as you did once before, make sure you have enough time and patience, as there will be a struggle... That is the way it is... -
Water purification machines, do you trust them?
Andre0720 replied to Don Chance's topic in General Topics
I put water from different sources in my blender. Quite the experiment. Here is a picture of the results from water from one of those 20 liter water bottles, described as from Reversed Osmosis, UV and what else. I brought a small bottle of water from Bangkok hospital, one of those bottles that are free. Just about all the same. I showed the results to a doctor, suggesting that he could use his facilities to determine what is in there... There is one supplier in Phuket for which the results are better. And the best results are from small bottles of Nestlé Pure Life, as one could guess. Could be plastic residue from those old bottles. Or else hehe. Does not have to be bacteria to be bad I suppose. -
Draft Prostitution Law To Set Voluntary Service At Minimum 20 Years
Andre0720 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Is that what the prostitutes want? I remember when a so-called philanthropic organization went in the Mae Sai district, to 'save' the girls from prostitution. These girls were very unhappy with the outcome, wondering how then they will feed their children. And to say that these women turn to providing such a service, because the men in this culture, will just make babies, then avoid responsibilities, do not provide for their women and children. And the law wants to punish women for that... -
Must be a joke... People here are fond of so many dishes that I consider 'Ahan bpen phit', that it begs the question of why not having a list of at least 20 of bad food dishes. This Deep-fried dough sticks might make it as part of that list. In addition to the ubiquitous deep fried this and that, starting with deep fried chicken in local markets. Fried in cheap oils, in non hygienic conditions, re-used oils that have become toxic. And it smells bad. I can smell the deep fried at a distance in markets. Never wanted to taste any of it, and I have never tasted the so-called 'popular Pa Thong Ko fried dough'. Never knew that it existed. Not that I am a fan of MacDonald, but when I enter to use the washroom, there is never a bad smell like in the markets. There are rules to follow in a MacDonald franchise. Including hygienic. Oh well, some 7 years ago, I totally lost trust in any Thai cook and cooking. And that is part of the reason. Other reasons include the use of refined sugar, and the major if not only food taste enhancer. But quite uncanny that just the 'looks' of fried food act as a repellent for me, but it acts as a bait for so many people...

44 Foreign Drivers Arrested in Patong with No Driving Licenses
Andre0720 replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
"arrested 39 foreign drivers for not wearing helmets, 44 with no driving license," Well, this makes me feel so much safer on the roads now. Police work, all about safety right?... "and eight for jumping red-lights." They must have forgotten to sound the horn before doing so. Lesson learned... -
Well, agree. "Instead of spending $10,000 to $15,000 for a trained Belgian [Malinois] or GSD [German Shepherd], they are now taking pit bulls from shelters and training them, and they are proving themselves to be amazing police and military K9s." Dogs are selected from shelter Austin Pets Alive! and trained by Universal K9, before being placed in police departments around the country at no charge. The New York-based Animal Farm Foundation provides a sponsorship to Universal K9 to contribute to the cost of the training. Since the program started two years ago, 11 pit bulls have been placed with police departments. All for the sake of saving money. 11 Pit Bulls were able to be trained. So obviously, some are trainable. The problem is to eliminate those Pit Bulls that have the instinct of biting and shaking whatever they were able to grab, and render someone handicapped. Does not happen with German Shepherds. Which simply bite, and hold, without causing damage. So how could these 11 Pit Bulls, saved from euthanasia perhaps, compensate for all these people, many of which children, were injured by so many Pit Bulls. Just look at the pictures of injured people. from Pit Bull compared to German Shepherds. I hope it does not happen to members of your family.

"There is nothing such as a bad dog, only bad owners." As long as such narratives are still used, the tragedies will keep on happening. No such thing as a bad dog, then one would have to explain why, for example, Pit Bulls could not be used by police, who consider them too dangerous and uncontrollable to be of any use. And this appears to suggest that poodles and Pit Bulls, well, they are all dogs, same family of animals. As if a poodle raised by a bad owner would start killing the neighbors and owners as well.

They fear ghosts, as innocuous as they are. But they will keep Pit Bulls, known for killing and maiming time and time again... Oh well. RIP.

Buy insurance: British tourist issues warning after moped crash

A Thai would definitely claim that the house owner is responsible......... -
Yes, my neighbor, some years ago, bought a Toyota for rental. A Russian guy rented it for a long time, more than a year. He was going back and forth to the airport... Neighbor receiving a speeding ticket in the mail, the Toyota was photographed going 140 on the way to the airport. In a hurry he said he was...

Well, thanks for the research. I used to buy this type of paste, years ago. As they were used in Thai cuisine to make spicy fried vegetables. Then I stopped when I realized how Thai people are so careless about handling these products, and how new paste would certainly be mixed with the old one leftover. I no longer trust these people who will do everything to save a few bahts. Now if there is a claim that Thais do not put sugar in those pastes, I would be extremely surprised. But I will check, because when I stopped using this product, it was for hygienic reasons. Now, in restaurants, this is not what is put in Tom Yam. The large canned containers of Tom Yam paste are there. Like the Maepranom brand. On the photo attached, 30% of sugar.

Ok. I will just copy and paste a same response, for your own knowledge and benefit. Even if you ask for 'no sugar', there will be sugar in your dish or Tom Yum. Thai people do not even know what is in the sauces and pastes that they add in the preparation of meals. These sauces, they typically contain some 20% of added sugar. "What is tom yum paste made of? Ingredients: Soy bean oil, lemongrass, salt, shallot, galangal, chili, water, dried shrimp, lime, msg, kaffir lime leaves, citric acid, garlic, sugar, paprika color." There is just about always sugar in the food here, mainly because nobody knows how to cook. I always say, the cook is the one who makes the sauce, and the sauce comes from Super Cheap mini-mart. The typical restaurant here has about 10 bottles of various sauces, about 20% sugar in each. So yes, it is very hard to eat a meal in Thailand that is not laced with this slow acting poison. Hope that this will help you, without the need of Google.

How can police here not feel guilty for letting this happen???
-
So you found a place where you can get less sugar, in Chiang Mai. Well, congratulations. You say that I am not accurate. In Phuket, I think that I am. Now the mere fact that in Chiang Mai, you also have to ask for less of this and that, says it all...

It is entirely possible to cook a dish with olive or coconut oil, tasty, for 80 bahts. Good oil, no more than 10 or 20 bahts worth, sure. But now even for 100 bahts, one gets very little...

Of course. But I walked all over Phuket town, and no such thing as healthy food there... "Pad Thai, oh what is the red sauce do you use? " "It is ketchup". Hehe. "Do you have dishes without sugar? Hummm, oh yes we have. But what about the sauces? Oh they come from Super Cheap mini-mart.". Just about all contain 20% of added sugar. Fish sauce perhaps could be an exception. But it limits the number of dishes... Some years ago, I paid $1,000 dollars for my neighbors, mother and daughter, who wanted to go take a specialty cooking course in Bangkok. When they came back, they just said, it was all about adding sugar and MSG to flavor the dishes. They could not believe it, same as in Phuket...

Morally, it is everyone's business. Just like this site here, many times has provided useful information to users. So yes I do share what I know with people, some I know very little. But what they do with the information, is of course their decision, and their own business...

So this is about one's favorite food poisoning. There is no such thing as good food in Thailand, at least if someone is looking for healthy food. Nobody knows how to cook, nobody. Cheap bad oil, heated at a point where the oil gets toxic. Smell is horrible. Then laced with sugar, lots of it. The only way that they know to give anything a flavor. All sauces are loaded with white sugar. Good oil, nah, too expensive for any Thai kitchen here. I use exclusively olive oil at home, and sometimes coconut oil. Nothing else. So brace yourself for diabetes and arthritis. on the long run. The odd chicken with rice, (no sauce please). Otherwise, I will not eat any of that type of food. None. And my health got so much better. ???? Picture of sugar stock at Super Cheap mini mart, on stocking day, and then some 10 days later. Not even a need to bring the sugar inside the store...
