Cash is still king for me and certainly here in Thailand. I have a car ( paid in cash ) , no need to rent.

I have no credit nor debit card either....

That is why many people come to Thailand especially Chinese and Sicilian people.  I depend on the banking system to get and spend money.  I couldn't carry enough for 20 years when I came and I use the banking and finance system to make money.  I think most do (except of course on Thai Visa).

At the entrance of Siam Paragon is a Tom Cruise statue and for years now there are people making pictures of him and them. I just walk through them but most folks wait for the picture to be taken.

I don't understand why the statue has to be there and why most people wait for pictures, it must be a Thai thing...To me it's rude to hold up the line but who am i?

No reason to look at the phone if you have half a brain.  Get an earpiece and listen and talk to your phone.  Smart use of a smart appliance.  You could also kill yourself with a frying pan but it didn't stop people from cooking in a pan instead on a stick over a fire.

Diffrece being frying pans dont talk or ring you or send pictures. However i find your comparision illogical. You could be using a frying pan whilst using your smart phone which is very much the same as the thread is about.

Ps i suspect talking to someone on a smart phone is a very small part of its use.

Cash used to be king.  One would have been rational to say you would never need a bank account to receive your own pension fund.  But now you can't get it in cash.  Can you rent a car without a credit card?  Well the smart phone may well replace your credit card ergo you may need one to draw your pension.

No banks will never become obsolete nor will ATM machines. I can rent a car and not take a smart phone or a  credit card into the rental company. Using the internet not on a smart phone but on my lap top.

You can talk to the smart phone not to another person.  You don't need to look at the smart phone to use it.  Directions are verbal and searching and response can be verbal.  Reading and writing - don't need to look at the phone.  Put in an earpiece they all have microphones attached.  You can talk to and instruct your phone to do just about anything you want.  You can be aware of the world around you while using a smartphone.  Learning to fly a helicopter is at first challenging because you have an extra control but once you get used to walking and chewing gum at the same time it's not a problem.

How do you kill yourself with a frying pan?

Does a hologram also appear when someone sends you a photo, so there's no need to look at the phone?

Cash as a physical entity will virtually cease to exist, with coins and checkbooks consigned to museums.

Not sure that's in the same league as looking at Youtube clips when you're driving a car.

The point is all technology can be used or misused.  I'm sure the same debate happened when man first learned to swim.

The motor vehicle as a form of technology has been around well over 100 years, people are still misusing it and killing themselves and others, same with electricity. People who kill themselves while using phones are just strengthening the gene pool IMO.

Banks Look to Cellphones to Replace A.T.M. Cards

Tell it to the NYT.  I'm not saying you don't know more or are aren't better informed than the New York Times.  Maybe you are a brain trust.

China will lead the way.....as they're about to do with electric cars.  We'll follow.

As I read the past few pages of this thread, I realize that Chuck, Saul's brother in Better Call Saul, has a lot of company.

This has been a great thread to read through.  I've experienced almost every single story shared, of the mindless/ignorant/unaware "floaters" throughout Thailand.  Don't get me wrong, it's happening worldwide, but it's especially prevalent and perverted here in LOS.  Definitely not specific to a particular demographic,

Get a grip.  The New York Times, since 1851 a chronicler of world history spanning three centuries. The global definer of news, the cultural arbiter of the civilized world, the leader in innovative print publishing, defender of free speech and the free market.  The New York Times, the global Newspaper of Record.

I didn't say anything abusive in fact I wrote you may be a brain trust.  The millions of people who don't have smart phones will be given smart phones by the people who want them to buy their product.

When I came to Udon in 1996, I was the only expat (that I know of at the time) with a computer, and one of the first people in Udon with a Loxinfo account.  When people told me tales of sending correspondence to Social Security or Veterans Affairs and not receiving a reply....after 6 months........I told them about email.  One by one, the seasoned expats jumped on the computer bandwagon.  It's been the same with a few people I know who have resisted resisted detested the idea of buying a smartphone.  But one by one, they fall.  And once they have one, I've yet to hear a complaint.

You seem to be trying to convert us to be pro smart phone. Never going to happen.

I might be forced to use one in the future for banking, buying stuff, but I, and others, regard the things as destroying society. Why would we want to buy something we regard as bad?

I for one will never buy anything advertised on a phone I was given/ forced to buy.

The only "app" ( I hate that word ) I would ever have on it would be one that blocked ads.

That over 1.5 billion people have bought one is meaningless on a planet that will see 10 billion in my probable lifetime.

The only people really benefitting from smartphones are Mr Samsung, Mr apple etc. The greatest con ever perpetrated on humanity, IMO, since the earliest con men persuaded their fellow cave dwellers that they could speak to "god".

To get back to the OP, my "stance" on the smart phones, is that they do not benefit humanity, and make the 1% even more mind bogglingly rich.

Seeing the sheeple q up all night to be first in line for the latest crapple machine, despite far cheaper brands being available, that work just as well, only proves to me how dumb some people are.

I don't deny that they have some useful applications, but in a world awash with information and BS, they just confuse the real information and increase the BS. So called "social media" is just c*** writ large, IMO.

That twatter is considered to be a responsible method of communicating with the people proves to me how dumbed down humans are becoming, baaaah baaaah baaaah.

Why would you buy a nutcracker when you could do it by slamming the nuts into your head?

I had an Daikin AC repaired this morning.  I showed the tech and his 4 assistants the error codes on my Note 4 smart phone.  He pulled out his Samsung smart phone and and looked up the codes in Thai.  Then he took a photo a part with his Samsung smart phone and sent it by Messenger to his shop and they sent out the correct replacement by motorcycle.

You can diagnose AC problems with a remote and smartphone and then give those to a repairman who can look up the answer in any language on his smartphone.

This is not the future.  This is the present. In a world awash with information you need new tools to cope with all that information.  My phone now holds ten times the information the most powerful computers held only 10 years ago.

Why do you have to show the repairman anything? Does he not know how to diagnose faults on the AC himself? Does he not know how to fix them himself?

If I want to fix something using the internet, I'll look it up myself and fix it myself. If that's not an option, I'll employ someone that should know what they are doing. That's why I pay them.

You are not going to convert me with tales of how useful they are. I just don't care, and will never willingly buy one. I don't have one, don't need one, don't want one.

I'm opposed because they convert people into zombies, not because of their usefulness or otherwise.

I'm waiting till Mr Ransomware hacks all the smartphones in the world and then I'll be :cheesy:.

How Patients’ Smartphones Can Save Their Lives.

Don't listen to me.  Don't get a smart phone.  Die.

Up to you.

No matter the level or type of provider, the key information needed is the same:

What happened today?

What are the current medications and allergies?

What is the past medical history (PMH)?

What, if any, medical decision documents exist (DNR, POLST, etc.)?

I don't depend on a Thai AC repairman to diagnose my AC problems.  Not that I don't like Thai people but I've been here for 20 years.  I'd rather tell him what the problem is and have him fix it.  I know how much the sensor cost and what his hourly rate is.  I don't get taken nor do I want to fix my own AC.  Same with a doctor.  I'll tell him what the problem is and then have him fix it.  I don't want to do a heart operation by myself.  I'll give the EMS all the information they need to make an informed decision quickly when time is of the essence.
