Wanted urgently: Thai language teacher, Mon - Fri - 2,500 baht a month!

A school in Korat became the center of attention yesterday after it was confirmed they had posted an ad for a Thai language teacher for just 2,500 baht a month.

Even in Thailand where countryside teacher salaries are low this was derisory.

The school in question - where there are 158 pupils and 12 teachers - said they had problems with literacy.

And there was no Thai language teacher at Ban Khok Sa-art school.

So they put the advertisement out for a temporary teacher from October this year until September next. The successful applicant would need a Bachelor's degree.

The director confirmed the ad had been made. But amid the furor about the low pay it has subsequently been taken down.

The director moaned about low budgets and waiting for more money. The school lived on donations, he claimed.

That depends if they are full or part time.

That salary was good back in the 80', now days with the cost of

a bowl of Bami Nam at 40-50 baht, 2,500 baht is an insult to any

person let alone a teacher.....

I taught in the US for many years. "If" you are non-union, your destiny is always "questionable". I understand budgets in Thailand.- really no different from anywhere else, but obviously - good teachers are not paid appropriately. I have a Master's degree, yet that had no effect on salary. Again, I understand budget constraints, but It's obvious that many want teachers at the minimum.Even international schools. Personally, I can run circles around both the school's standards and Thai criteria. I don't profess to be so superior to others, but I assure you that I am not an "average" professional. And I smile alot! It boils down to this- if one accepts the "pittance" of salary for their hard work, then Thailand got a deal- period.

I thought it illegal to pay less than the 300b min wage

If, as another poster has said, they would only work two days a week, then:

Two days a week x 300 baht = 600 baht a week x 4 weeks a month = 2,400 baht.

Still a pittance, though.

Note that the school director acknowledged the advertised pay is too low...

So, there is no need to justify with assumptions and math.

Read the post I quoted a little more carefully.

And exactly where did i justify the low pay?

Also, what assumption?

Edit: I'm not seeing anywhere in the story where the director acknowledges the pay is too low.

However, from their comments I can see how that assumption might be made.

Must be hard for the junta to become aware of the fact there is a school depending on donations and none of its Thai teachers can recite the 12 core values properly. Thailand 4.0 in full swing again.

Considering I pay 20,000 baht per year for my daughter to go to school for 9 months of the year, the offered salary seems fair, i.e. 20,000/9 months = 2,222.22 baht per month, after all, we don't want school fees going up, do we 555
