Thai human rights academics have called on the Asean to step in to help solve the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar’s Rakhine state with a dire warning that the stateless people may flood into Thailand in the future if the problem is not resolved.

Speaking at a forum held Friday (Sept 8) at the Institute of Asian Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Sarawut Aree, deputy director of the institute’s Muslim Studies Center, said that the situation in Rakhine state was very critical with at least 400 Rohingyas being killed and over 100,000 others fled into Bangladesh in the past two weeks since Aug 25.

However, UN refugee agency claimed that a quarter of one million Rohingyas in Rakhine state had flooded into Bangladesh whereas UN special rapporteur on human rights for Myanmar estimated that at least 1,000 were killed.

To restate ASEAN is a toothless tiger that will achieve nothing except to waste taxpayers hard earned money as the committees, subcommittees meet, eat stay in expensive hotels , avoid any discussion on difficult issues & cannot agree on anything positive lest they upset "big brother" China
