Dongtan Beach walkway

Featured Replies

while they are busy turning the Southern end of Dongtan Beach almost into a highway, at the northern end we have our annual disintegration of the walkway.

it's a total disgrace and you can hardly walk on it now (as usual every year )  and now it has happened in two different places.

If you look ahead in the first photograph there is another gaping hole and collapse near where that guy in white is walking.

This has been happening every year so my question is I wonder why they don't use a different more permanent method of construction?

They simply layed the pavers on sand without a proper foundation. The new walkway to the south has a concrete base. Yeah!

They made a huge mistake destroying all of the old-growth trees in parts of the beachfront.  The trees helped keep the soil/sand in place (helped prevent the soil/sand slide that is taking place).  That is one problem.  The other problem is the horrible construction, which is not just in the area in the pictures, but all along both Pattaya and Jomtien beaches.  What a mess they have created........so ugly compared to what it was....so people unfriendly.  Now it really does look like a freeway.  I really miss the shade trees!  It is so hot now to try to walk/ exercise along the beachfront area.  The entire project has been a DISASTER.

Too often the city administration 'fixes' what isn't broken--and ignores the things that really need to be done.

Words fail me.

Incredible.

If you look at the picture those lovely old trees will be history when the roadway is expanded (hopefully that will be years away)

When I was 15, my mother forced me to lay bricks in the backyard. I have never been good at such things. I smoothed the dirt and laid the bricks down.

It, to this day, looks bad. It is uneven most places, and when it rains, the indentations form puddles.

My backyard...Jomtien Beach...Same same.

Because:

They don't employ engineers that know how to design the project

They don't employ supervisors that know how the job should be done

They employ people that know nothing about making paths/ roads to do the job.

Doing a proper job costs more money.

I have yet to see a public area concrete job in LOS done properly. Only private enterprise employs people that do a good job.

Using pavers allows them to be relaid when the base is leached out and collapses. Unfortunately, no money is available for maintenance.

johng's last photos look depressing. City ruins what was perfectly fine, only to build what looks like some sort of airport runway at the beach. Who has ever complained there wasn't enough space to walk? It's like someone is on a mission to sabotage the place. Now there's going to be parking, so people can drive straight to the beach!

Well, lets level all the sand and trees, put pavemnet on it, turn it into wonderful 'drive-in beach', a parking lot by the sea.

Yep they already did the whole length of Jomtien many very old large growth trees where removed for no reason other than to replace them with palm trees all in a row.

The first 2 photos show what was a parking lot with lots of trees all of them now gone...they should have and could have worked around most of those trees, now as pointed out above all the erosion protection has gone there is no shade and soon the mobile disco pickup trucks will have a nice place to park.

That is certainly a possibility that suspiciously exists.

It really is totally crazy.  The area in the pics that were posted earlier used to have 4-5 rows of beautiful old-growth shade trees.  Now you can't walk down there any more because of the intense sunshine and heat.  It does seem as though somebody wants to ruin both beachfronts--in Pattaya and Jomtien--and they have.  But we all know what happened:  $$$$$$ with no thought about the consequences, and certainly no consideration as to whether farangs would like it (which 99% do not).

They took all the trees

And put 'em in a tree museum

And they charged the people

A dollar and a half to seem 'em

They paved paradise

And put up a parking lot

With a pink hotel, a boutique

And a swinging hot spot

Don't it always seem to go

That you don't know what you've got

Til its gone

They paved paradise

And put up a parking lot

Hey, now they paved paradise

To put up a parking lot

some more photos

The thing is it was terrible before. You had to look at your feet to walk because the path was such an uneven mess. I think the pavement had been laid straight on the sand which was bound to fail.

As far as I can see Dongtan beach is being redone the same way as Jomtien beach has been, which is pretty decent (especially compared to Pattaya beach). To me it looks like a solid job that could last for many years.

but I'm sure they learned the lesson and have improved design and included adequate drainage this time.

I really don't understand why they had to cut all the trees down they could and should have worked around them.

There are manholes every few meters, I hope that will be enough to avoid that kind of disaster :ermm:

Them's not man holes them's bear traps !  ( mostly Russian bear maybe a few from China too)

So depressing to see THEM continue to destroy Jomtien Beach.  It was once beautiful.  Pattaya Beach is also horrible now.........same renovation plan.  How in the world could they decide to embrace the absolute worst renovation plan imaginable!  Both plans see to have been designed to promote skin cancer and beach erosion, and to make the areas as uncomfortable for tourists as possible.
